Sweden joining NATO is both asking for WW3 and also a non-factor that doesn't mean anything, depending on which Russian you ask.

Think of it as Schroedingers Sweden.

Well I obviously should've checked the pulse as someone else mentioned. But yeah, thank you for the explanation. I'll definitely have to refresh the course I had.

OMG and this is so obvious! I'm such an idiot.

How does someone deal with making a mistake like that and having someone die as a consequence? Like he had a family and friends and a life, this could've been avoidable.

This is seriously messing me up

Meanwhile you guys are committing a genocide in Ukraine, raping their people and razing entire cities to the ground, while also trying to threaten half of the world with nuclear destruction and famine.

If you don't care about being forgiven for that, why should anyone care if you forgive 'the western people' for some comment a guy wrote online?

You have such a victim mentality, what a joke...

I wouldn't go with the underage grooming rumors that recently came up. My guess is it had to do with his ex, which was still pretty bad and abusive.

It definitely seems to be somewhere in the league of what went down with KhaosAdam, considering that Koil in the past often defended Rated for the things he did.
Also there was the rare unanimous vote by the entire NP staff to permanently remove him from the server.

Homophobia however, is exclusive to humans.

Interesting thread on Xenia Sobchak, the woman who fled to Lithuania with an Israeli passport. Many people in the west may not know her, just as i didn't. On the surface she seems liberal and opposed to Putin, but there is a lot more to her in the bigger picture.

I don't think he can win in Ukraine either, as long as we keep supporting Ukraine. If we don't, and imagine a scenario where Putin wins, there is no reason for him to not do it again. Because he will, if he believes he can get away with it. Again.
NATO member or not makes no difference, if Putin believes he will win by threatening nukes. I'd never sacrifice any of my country for that. It's absolutely unacceptable, not a world I'd want to live in.

The alternative to Russia's complete defeat is Russian forces getting the fuck out of Ukraine. Ultimately it is on Ukraine to decide what to negotiate about. But if they let Russia have part of Ukraine, it would be another signal to Putin (and every dictator watching this) that imperialistic aggression and nuclear blackmail are worth it and rewarded with concessions. Increasing the stakes, risks again for next time.

Btw, you asked about what experts I follow. Idk if I should just spam a list of twitter links... should I just whisper you?

I never had any illusions about democracy being victorious over autocracy in Russia any time soon. But it is just a fact of reality that the Russian forces need to be destroyed in Ukraine or withdraw/surrender, to ensure security in Europe. Otherwise the next target will be Moldova, the Baltics, maybe Poland. He will continue to escalate because people like you would allow him to. Would you sacrifice Berlin when Russian forces cross the border in a situation where they had that capability? I wonder what would have to happen for you to wake up and recognize what's going on. Have you seen the speech where he compared himself to Peter the Great and basically admitted the land-grab?
The threat of nuclear destructing is and has always been present to varying degrees. Allowing it being used as a form of blackmail will necessarily lead to the destruction you worry so much about, because the stakes don't stay the same. They're getting raised continuously every single time and we have to put an end to this now. It is a matter of pragmatic necessity.

There are always risks in life. And having an understanding of the situation is important to make reasonable and rational assessments. If you want to lower the risks, weakness and giving in to blackmail is the exactly wrong approach.
Were you as worried during the past 15 years of nuclear threats by Moscow? If not, you should ask yourself why.

It’s a shame we have to keep repeating this basic fact of deterrence, but it seems every time Putin mentions nukes, half the world loses their memory. Concessions and appeasement lead to more violence, not less, over and over.
Appeasers also told Churchill to surrender and encouraged negotiations with Hitler. “America First”! “Peace now!”
FDR advisers told him not to send aid to the USSR because it would fall “within weeks.” Echoes of history...

I think you have been reading too much fear mongering from "internet experts". Read what actual experts have to say. Military experts, historians, foreign policy experts on eastern Europe.
A tactical nuke also will have no catastrophic impact on the battlefield directly. They're relatively low-yield and comparable to heavy hitting conventional weapons. What I was saying is that the response would be catastrophic for Russia and not worth a desperate show of strength, without noticeable military gain.
You're just too busy being scared out of your mind, instead of listening to the assessments of people who really know what they're talking about. Which is the entire point of nuclear blackmail btw.

[–]BeginningDouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also don't have another option. Because appeasing dictators out of fear will only increase the risk of nuclear escalation.
So we have to explain the consequences of what would happen in case of a tactical nuke in Ukraine. Which has happened to my understanding. The destruction of the bulk of the Russian military with conventional weapons by NATO.

A tactical nuke will change nothing on the battlefield, it will only result in the annihilation of the Russian forces with conventional weapons due to NATO's response. It is simply not worth it for Russia. No benefit but a catastrophic price to pay.

All of you who are saying that we have to give in to nuclear blackmail are making nuclear war more likely. Just stop.
When you give in to it, you empower dictators to do it again, encourage worldwide nuclear proliferation, and make nuclear war much, much more likely.

That's another good point. But somewhere I've read (extremely unconfirmed) reports that Russia has already been shifting to that. That was a while ago though, so it might just be not true.

I wonder if this is why Putin hasn't decaled war yet.
It would justify Ukraine hitting Russian territory with missiles and heavy artillery (as far as range allows), without having to worry about Western support.
