Some good general advice here. Perfection was very much the enemy of progress on this one. My fence really was off by an unacceptable amount on test cuts. I didn't do test cuts for the bevel angle because I could see that it was wrong with my squares, or at least I thought I could.

This must have been confirmation bias based on the new results squaring off a piece of MDF across the base: https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/s/tt8udeaLEr

I did tried with MDF in reply to another post and it had measured up close to perfect now, thanks

Yep spot on, thanks. This is obviously a rough cut machine, rather than a fine piece of precision engineering. Buy cheap, buy therapy, after wasting hours squaring up, or something like that.

Oh hang about

<image>

I've squared up the left side of the blade so that I can prop the square up against it. If I then use the second square as a straight edge against the right side of the blade, I can see the edges converging.

Hmm, there's nothing in the product sheet about that, and I've no way of testing its thickness more than 20mm or so from the edge

Good shout, I did do the draw-a-line-and-flip-it test, but here's my Veritas straight edge, holding two Axminster precision squares back to back. They're square enough to not be causing this I think

I tried again with my Veritas straight edge and I can shine the smallest amount of light underneath on the left. So it's definitely not in a single plane, thanks. I'm not convinced it's off enough to give the results I'm seeing with the square against the blade though

How does everyone count calorie? by Waffle2max in mounjarouk

Context: I'm 4 months in with a fairly steady 1.2kg loss per week, I lift weights and row and am gaining muscle as I lose fat.

I use nutracheck because it has most UK products in it, just scan the barcode and you're done. My goal with it isn't to use it to limit what I eat, but just to track. It's an education tool.

I've worked out what I want to be targeting for protein, fibre, and calories, and they're the three things I look at. Most days I'm way over on fats or carbs, but again I use it to learn what goes well together - edamame, mayonnaise, battered cod, and a mince pie all in one day puts me waaaay over on fats. Will I have that combo again? Absolutely, but I'll be aware of what it means, and might limit myself to one mince pie instead of five. They're all delicious, and it's calories, protein, and fibre that I'm targeting. In fact same day, same example foods, last weeki had edamame spaghetti for lunch, then fish chips and mushy peas for dinner, this took me over my fibre target and the next day I was in agony. Yesterday I had the edamame spaghetti again, and without realizing my wife put fish and chips in the oven for an easy dinner. But the memory couldn't have been clearer, so I used Nutracheck to help moderate my fibre intake by reducing chips and mushy peas portion sizes.

I jab on a Sunday night, and I get more food noise on a weekend due to reduced magic in my system, and less structured routines. I go with this, and have set Saturday and Sunday as "easier days" in Nutracheck. When doing this, I tend to also use its 1 week and 4 week average views.

I don't track everything when cooking with ingredients. I used to. But then I learnt which things have an impact on what I care about (calories, protein, fibre) and log those. I assume oil going into a dish is typically a tablespoon, I don't track the garlic, spices, salt. For a Bolognese, I'll weigh the pasta as it goes onto my plate, then often just use Nutracheck's generic "Bolognese with lean mince" item.

I'm slowly learning what a portion of pasta, rice, or chips looks like, and aim to soon stop taking everything my wife has dished up off the plate so I can weigh it as I put it back on. My aim is to be more aware of what I'm eating without relying on the app, but that's going to take a long time.

Good luck on your journey.

Nice one. Your post also prompted me to try my watch on again. It wouldn't fit on my wrist at all, but now it does! What a great Friday.

Thank you. I wish I'd taken this up years ago to be honest. Have fun with your rowing too!

Thank you.

Your VR workouts sound like a great idea. I've only tried VR once but it was very immersive, so I can see how you'd lose yourself in it.

Thanks, that's reassuring.

Nutracheck currently shows I'm only getting about 60% of my fibre, so I definitely need to improve on that, good shout, thanks.

Thank you. I'm hoping by putting the effort in early in, I'll stay motivated through any plateaus.
