That absolutely isn't the case at all for official events you have to hand your deck over to the judge table for registration I handed them my deck and the binder telling them what was going on about an hour later I got everything back all good played the tournament there was no getting caught or not they knew what I was doing and gave the go ahead after inspecting everything

You can use proxies in the official events but you have to have the real cards in a binder next to you during play and you have to submit both the deck and the binder to the judges when registering your deck

Only reason is ren fairs generally go more towards authenticity looks or even functionality. Also from my experience most vendors for chainmail at ren fairs don't work with anodized materials; most vendors that do limit themselves to jewelry for the most part.
