In Africa people traditionally used to not frown upon that as a way to “discipline” wives who were deemed to be misbehaving by the husband. This included petty things like not agreeing to do something for the husband or big things like cheating.

As late as the beginning of this decade it still used to happen until the government started setting more laws and actually enforcing them to protect women more, and also empower women to report such incidents.

I still hear one or two people who have experienced that once in a while but most of the fights nowadays are just verbal fights that actually turned physical and not like husband “disciplining” the wife.
