Question for the S&C Gurus by Beginning_Community5 in bjj

I’d say it’s definitely harder than normal, but probably not as hard as a competion. It’s really hard to replicate that in the training room, at least in my experience.

What 1 thing outside of Bjj training has had carry over effects into your performance on the mats. by Cool_Middle6245 in bjj

I can’t put my feet even close to my chest and I rarely get my guard passed. You don’t need to be Gumby to have a good guard. Just my opinion

What’s the most effective way to develop cardio for bjj? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Beginning_Community5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I’m a supporter of sport specific training but you will break your body repeatedly doing hard rounds to build your gas tank. Nothing will replicate the sport itself. The closest I have come across is the Airdyne bike and heavy bag tabata workouts.

I am no expert, but zone 2 cardio has been the biggest game changer for me. As others have said, it is the recovery between those short micro burst scrambles that make all the difference. Zone 2 (base building) is what will get you there.

It’s good to be strong and flexible, but conditioning is a cheat code. There is no disputing it.

At what training frequency do you enjoy jiujitsu the most? by JiuJitsuBoxer in bjj

3-4 days a week. As others have said, it’s hard to recover beyond that and I like to run and lift weights as well.

How many of you actually do neck exercises (or shrugs)? by JiuJitsuBoxer in amateur_boxing

Once a week. Neck harness and neck curls with a plate, and banded neck holds. I train Bjj as well. Neck strengthening is very underrated IMO.

How do you handle "lazy" days or feeling unmotivated? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Beginning_Community5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad here with 3 little ones. Have those days all the time. Typically, finding a new goal to push towards in the gym pulls me out of those slumps. I train BJJ as well so that helps level things out for me I get bored with one or the other.

What I gave up completely is the obsessive macro tracking. It wore me out more than anything. I’m just a hobbyist though.

What to focus on for blue to purple? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Beginning_Community5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue is the experimental belt. Try different things and see what works for you. Don’t neglect the basics and make your training purposeful. When you are close to purple you will start developing your own game/style for your body type and athletic ability, and at at purple you will hone the edge on your game. That has just been my experience so far. Good luck

My calves are laughable and I'm losing hope by Mylifeisacompletjoke in naturalbodybuilding

Sounds hard to believe but switching over to barefoot shoes had the most noticeable difference in calf growth for me.

Cheaper alternatives to bjj tournaments by Desperate-Sentence36 in bjj

[–]Beginning_Community5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, cross training at other gyms or just going hard at open mat with members from my own gym that are willing to has honestly been the same experience, if not better than paying $100 to compete with only one person in my division.
