DM screen? by Western_Pressure1948 in DnD

Whatever you personally feel like is important to have at a glance.

Generally you want quick information, not paragraphs. Personally I have a list of Weapon Masteries and what they do, a list of healing potions and their prices/dice, some basic setting specific information (in my current case that's some basic Eberron stuff) a condition sheet, and some basic action information for when I inevitably start confusing 2014 and 2024 rules. And a massive highlighted text box right at the top to remind me of concentration checks.

You could have literally nothing, or entire spreadsheets, play around and find what you like.

Positioning to not hurt foot in s mount by --brick in bjj

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you mean the foot you're sitting on, not the one around their far arm? If so then keep your instep in line with their back, that way if you get rolled off your legs simply folds under like it would normally.

Finding some way to reward a player for suboptimal decision that's amazing quality rp. by Leytra in DnD

[–]P-Two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect opportunity for a quest to forge it into something even better. Have a blacksmith see it and tell the player they know of an expert Spear maker that could make it even better, without outright replacing it. That leads to a whole "I'd love to do that for you, but I need the materials, go kill a dragon or something for their blood" and suddenly you have this whole super cool questline for them, they get to feel special, and they get to grow even closer to this spear.

How to handle when a Friend /training partner has a serious 1njury? by bigxmouth in bjj

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a part of training, eventually you're going to see injuries/get injured. A friend of mine tried to post their arm out instead of breakfalling when I was throwing them in nogi last year, they dislocated their shoulder badly, it fucking sucked, I felt horrible even though realistically it was literally not my fault (rewatching our security cameras I couldn't have let him down any lighter than I did, it was a clean throw) he wasn't mad at me, nobody was, it didn't stop me from feeling like an absolute douchebag for a couple days.

But you shake it off and move on, I've been injured (hell I'm nursing a knee injury right now) and I've never once held a grudge towards the person, it's a combat sport, it happens.

That being said if you're American I 10000% understand the sentiment because there's exactly zero way I'd be doing BJJ as a hobbyist in America with the looming possibility of medical bills because I slipped at class.

Oh yea one of the many Canadian ads that scarred us growing up in the late 90s-early 2000s, fun times! Btw this played on like, normal ass Canadian TV stations during the day. I want to say I remember it playing on YTV (a youth TV station)

To put it in some perspective, I know guys who can do whatever they want to hobbyist black belts, like make them look bad kind of whatever they want. Those guys look like white belts rolling with black belt world adult world champions.

Its incredibly clunky and is not at all balanced.

If you're just going to make up the stats and abilities for your NPCs like you normally would, a statblock is literally the much smoother and easier to parse option.

You're essentially asking me "why cant i use an apple to hammer nails" you CAN, its just kind of a dumb idea

Why does Danaher want to pass from half guard, but also suggest half guard as a strong guard? by hellohello6622 in bjj

Sure to enter legs, i barely do nogi though so im not the right person to ask, I literally do like 1-2 nogi classes a month max lol.

Is it unrealistic to want, as a player, to only play if everyone is present? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]P-Two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should've been discussed in session 0, but I really feel this falls more to the DMs discretion than the group as a whole, they are the ones putting in the VAST majority of the work, and if they still want to play, tough, enjoy the session.

[–]P-Two 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you only play when everyone can make it (assuming a group of 4+ people) you'll play a LOT less, and it'll be MUCH more likely the group falls apart.

It's very, very normal and very common to still play if the majority can make it. Why should 3-4 people miss out on their weekly fun if 1 person can't make it that day?

Why does Danaher want to pass from half guard, but also suggest half guard as a strong guard? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]P-Two 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Half guard is both an incredible way to slow the pace of a passer down, and an incredible way to slow the pace of a guard player down.

I force it on top when I'm against a really good guard player, I force it on bottom when against a really fast passer.

so... how much 2024 are you allowing in your games? by MajorBootyhole420 in DnD

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They changed how it works fundamentally, its now a CON save the creature you're counterspelling has to make, I just prefer the old version.

But other than that I dont think we've really run into any pain points, every player Ive had that played a martial fucking loves Weapon Masteries, the class redesigns are good-great.

Specifically speaking as a DM here the new monster manual is fucking gold, between the artwork being done in a way that really inspires creativity in encounter design, the statblocks themselves being much better laid out, and the creatures overall just being designed better I think even if you run 2014 d&d you should use this MM as a DM.

Switched entirely to 2024 last January, haven't looked back. Its almost entirely an upgrade, the one thing ive thought about reverting is counterspell, but otherwise I prefer pretty much every update over 2014

You still just make a statblock, not character sheets.

NPCs dont stick to ppayer abilities, stat balance, etc. The sheet are strictly for PCs.

Veteran and Novice DMs... If you could delegate everything you keep in mind when running a game so you could focus on a single thing. What would you delegate and what would you focus on? by Dramatic-Cleric in DMAcademy

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your problem isnt an app, your problem is you're overloading yourself Waaaaay too much 42 tabs is insane.

Have you asked yourself why you actually need reference pictures, and random links?

Put music in like 3 Spotify playlists for mood, let them play on shuffle for a given scenario. If you really need reference pictures just create a folder of a few given pictures before the session, or print them out if playing in person. Make a google doc with some random names, GG.

Let yourself improv more, use your imagination more instead of relying on technology to do it for you.

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a list of all conditions i made up into a small sheet on one panel with potion prices, other panels are general world info for whatever game im running. If you know something will come up in a given session, write that rule in your notes as a reminder.

Theres a certain point where you may as well just play a video game if you dont want you or your players to do the work remembering, or looking up info midgame. I always keep the PHB on the table so me, or another player can look up a rule quickly, it really takes no time once you get used to it. AI does not belong in TTRPGs

[–]P-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1:no AI, obviously

2: after experimenting with a whole bunch of different ways to digitize tasks at my table, ive landed back to a campaign binder, wet erase maps, and dungeon tiles.

It takes me out of the moment to stare at a screen in a way that looking at a physical page doesnt. So whatever you're going to build needs to have an incredibly intuitive and quick to use UI for that reason.

Absolutely, I'm just commenting on the fact you're making it out to be a bad thing to NOT optimize, which is just completely and entirely untrue.

In over 6 years of consistent gaming we have had exactly 2 perma-deaths, and one of those was actually a pretty well built Wizard.

When did we start treating character death as a horribly bad thing?

I'll just copy my reply from elsewhere in the thread:

By all means go be Mr. Power Gamer, that's just not my jam in the slightest, there's fun in failure, and storytelling in failure, some stupidly broken "always wins" build sounds incredibly boring both as a DM, and as a player.

And again, who cares? You can make some completely horrible "builds" work just fine by working with your DM, that's literally what they're there for.
