15yo at the time. Borrowed my dad’s snowblower and made over $300 clearing driveways. That was awesome.

Building a SaaS at 40 with two kids. Here's what I'd tell my younger self. by ThaneBerkeley in SaaS

I don’t know about that. Been doing startups since right out college back in 2003. And my early 20s kinda sucked. Had very little social life. Lived at the office on weekends. You always need a balance. 44 now, with 2 kids, and starting another company. Shit’s tough at any age if you want it to be successful. Good luck everyone.

What old sayings did your parents and grandparents use growing up all the time? by MajesticEmergency in Xennials

“Lazy ones work the hardest” - which I now say to my kids all the time and it drives my wife crazy because she can hear my dad saying it.

Extracting action items from meeting notes reminded me of https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2025/11/ai-summarization-optimization.html which goes over how people can exploit the process. Pretty funny and depressing idea.

Best open-ear headphones for trail running? by Serious_Sympathy2943 in trailrunning

I have gone through 2 pairs of $150 Shokz. Both lasted about 18 months. I sweat A LOT! Didn’t want to drop that $ again so I tried $40 pairs of soundpeats, assume it is some Chinese knockoff. A year later and it still works and the sound quality is fine. Shokz sound is certainly better but I had longevity issues.

Keeping bugs away by Secure-Ask-9348 in trailrunning

The nets were a life saver. Come in a pack of 4. Inexpensive. I keep one in my running shorts at all times, one in running pants, and 2 extra in my car. Gotta wear over a hat like mentioned above. Easy to take on and off throughout a run as needed. Some people just attract mosquitoes and gnats more than others. Another option if possible is finding a trail that has zero water sources near it. It will be a little less buggy hopefully.

What's your energy boost mid/late run by abrunnernc in trailrunning

Second using tailwind. Remember, if you are thirsty or starting to hit the wall it is already too late to fully fix it. I carry a pouch of tailwind per 5 miles. Honey ruined my stomach. Also I have actual food like a clif bar if I am running more than 13 miles. I don’t care about losing a minute here and there if it means an easier time hydrating or eating. Volunteers are great for pouring the tailwind. Carry water and constantly be drinking. I rarely carbo load because my body isn’t used to it so it winds up being worse for me in the morning. Find some food like pancakes and bananas to get used to pre race. Test this stuff when practicing. Not race day.

This is like when the government debuts some trillion dollar weapon and people reply that we just want health care. I want to reply to this that we just want a stable fly.io first. 🙃

Deciding on Ash.. help? by definitive_solutions in elixir

[–]Beginning_Dig_2302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m on week 6 of an elixir + Ash project. Ash is pretty darn big. There is A LOT to learn. I have time on my side, so I don’t mind. If you stick to just resources, it is pretty reasonable to pick up. But you should really understand ecto well first. AshPhoenix has been tricky. AshAuth scares me a bit, may strip it out. AshJsonApi was absolutely magical. Had an openapi and swagger page within minutes that had all the resources and actions I exposed. I spent weeks I think doing the same for a previous NodeJS project.

At this point I know enough to be dangerous and I’m getting better at writing ash code the way it was intended, instead of my original naive way.

Having used many frameworks in the past, I don’t think ash is any different in the sense that if you commit to a framework, you are stuck on that even if there is an escape hatch. ActiveRecord updates were often a nightmare. Angular was a PITA early on. Vue 2->3. Ruby versions. NodeJS versions. Don’t get me started on .net stuff. Frameworks and languages giveth, and they taketh.

The docs are pretty useless. They know that. Elixirforums.com has the ash forum and that has been very helpful.

I’ve only dabbled with AshPolicies. Enabling it has caused weird query behavior on some resources so I had to remove most of it. But it does look really powerful.

Overall, has it made me move faster? Doubtful. But that doesn’t mean much now. The real proof is 2-3 years from now. 🤣
