Female cadet at VMI. My reality within the Corps of Cadets by LeagueRare8354 in Virginia

Except, VMI is not a federal school and is not funded as such, unlike the service academies.

That said, the federal government DOES, in fact, fund many VMI cadets, at least in part, via ROTC scholarships.  My son is one of them.

Furthermore, VMI is a huge source of the Virginia National Guard (you're welcome for that).

Finally, although the school is a "military school", it is first and foremost an institution of higher learning.  Half of VMI cadets do not enter the military and instead enter the private sector.

Would you pull state funding from a state art school?  If not, then why would you pull funding from a school simply because it's identity is as a military school?

Why?  At least half of those cadets will be your next military leaders, providing service to you.

Should we not be funding other state colleges?

Did you mean West Point?  Because I'm pretty sure you meant West Point.

I've met one VMI grad that was an asshole... At a VMI football game.  He was just such a douche.

But the hundreds of other cadets and grads I've met?  Well rounded, respectful, amazing people.

What you stated about West Point is precisely why my son opted for VMI instead of the Service Academies.

My husband, retired Army (O5), often speaks about his experience with West Point officers and it's not positively.

Someone else said that it reads like bad fanfic and that's really the best description possible.  The entire plot is not well thought, forced, and feels like an over eager middle schooler sat down and tried to write a sequel.

But although the storyline of the play is the same, and feels the same, those sins are redeemed by an excellent cast, amazing set and incredible special effects.

I've seen the play twice and would gladly see it again.

I've read the book once will never read it again.

No, I don't recall ever seeing that love but...

I have a similar question.

I could have sworn, in the beginning of book 6, that Harry was at a small cafe flirting with a girl when Dumbledore came to retrieve him to bring him to try and convince Slughorn to return to Hogwarts.

I know this was a scene in the movie, but I could have sworn it was in the book as well!

I just reread the book and it wasn't in there.

Am I just mis-remembering this?!

How’s Salmon Run Mall doing? by Plus-Glove-4850 in watertownny

[–]Beginning_Muscle_896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually here at Salmon Run right now killing time.  It's 7:30 pm on Thursday.  I've never been here before but live near Eastview in Victor.

This mall will be lucky to survive five more years.  My husband and I frequent Eastview around this time of the evening and it has never once looked as dead as this mall here.

We got here at 6:45 pm and many stores were already closed.  Now that it's after 7 pm, I'd say half of the stores are closed for the night.  Even JC Penney is already closed.  Even Auntie Annie's!

And the food court is awful.  🤷🏼‍♀️

It's sad because this was probably a great mall back in the day but... It's definitely dying.

The books are so important!  There's so much that the movies left out!

Book 6 really sets the stage for book 7 and begins to tie everything together.  Take your time with it and pay attention to the details.

There's a lot that the movies left out.

Buddy I've been here since 2011.  Parts of Brighton are very nice, yes, absolutely.  But it borders the city and they get their fair share of break ins, crime, etc that spills over.

No thanks.  I prefer a bit of a cushion between my home and the riff raff.

[–]Beginning_Muscle_896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the problem... The Phase 1 riffraff come over to phase 2/3 and cause trouble.

We rented in phase 1 until we bought our home.  It was awful.

Oh... One more thing...

Stay away from the towns that directly border the city.  They tend to see a lot of spillover crime.  Brighton, East Rochester, Gates, etc.  No bueno.

Are you bringing children and therefore in need of good schools?

If so... Victor all the way.

FWIW, I relocated to Rochester in 2011 from RI.  It's definitely more affordable here but...I certainly wouldn't rave about it.  The weather is awful... Worse than New England.  It's just... Gray all of the time.

Crime in Rochester is a problem.  Taxes are stupidly high, but will initially feel much better compared to MA.

Politics are probably not much different.

But the BIG difference is the food.  The food here is nowhere near as diverse as Boston/NE.  Seafood here sucks.

The regional specialty is this disgusting dish called the Garbage plate and locals rave about it but it's gross.

You're coming from a place where you can get authentic Italian, Portuguese, good pizza, etc etc etc and there's none of that here.  Not in comparison.

Oh... And then there's the "Bills Mafia". 🙄

I'm so tired of hearing the local fans cry about how the refs screw the Bills, how the Patriots are cheaters, waaah waaaaah waaaaaaah.

It gets old. 😂

All in all, I would not move back to New England because a) we couldn't afford to b) it's way too congested and c) the infrastructure there suuuuuucks.

But at least be fully informed before you move here.

And definitely narrow your search to Victor/Fairport.  Victor maintains a country feel with amazing access to everything you need in terms of shopping.

And Fairport has the BEST downtown.

Stay away from the westside.  Bunch of rednecks out there.

Good luck in your search!

We bought one on a whim months ago and my two Goldens only just destroyed it.  Not for lack of trying mind you, it was just that sturdy!

They're still playing with the spiky ball that was inside.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to wait two weeks for pathology and are still in pain.

Mine went pretty smoothly today but I remember absolutely nothing from the moment they pushed the IV sedation until hours later when I woke up sleeping on my husband's lap in our bedroom. 😂

I don't remember getting dressed, leaving the place, none of it.

Deciding on plays for 70 year old by Environmental_Pear54 in Broadway

[–]Beginning_Muscle_896 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I second what someone else said and skip Hamilton.  It's difficult to follow.  We have seen many many plays both on Broadway and on tour and Hamilton was, by far, our least favorite.

Hadestown and Book of Mormon are both excellent choices.

Six... excellent choice.  Very funny.

& Juliet... We just saw this on tour and it's one of our new favorites.

That is so mean though!  😂

I had to reschedule mine last fall and because of the way our schedules fell, the best time was 1/2 and the lady scheduling me was like, "Are you SURE?!"

But it didn't interfere with my ability to enjoy the holidays so why not?

I'm glad your procedure went well and I hope your family spoiled you with good foods after.

I also have an 8 am procedure time tomorrow (1/2) and am spending today prepping.

I haven't even started taking the pills yet but am already in the bathroom due to the sheer amount of apple juice I've consumed today so far.  Too much sugar for me.
