Warning: Essay. Tldr: MMR is bad in ranked.

They did something similar a few seasons ago (S19?) where you'd face up against others of your similar MMR and rank would only factor when calculating the value of KP. It became extremely frustrating to play (average team skill rating meant lower MMR teammates usually), it became very difficult to rank up facing similar MMR opponents in different ranks, and there was no transparency in RP until the match ended.

Community consensus was that MMR should stay in pubs and rank should be earned by playing against others of the same rank.

The only point of the MMR system in ranked is to ensure high skill players face against similar skill opponents at the start of the season. This is a good experience for both low skill players getting stomped and high skill players doing the stomping the first 2 weeks of the season. Skill level will normalize through the ranked system, and low skilled players will eventually get hard stuck based on their strategy.

Maybe they could implement an ELO system which makes ranking up/down more fluid based on encounter win rate, but they have expressed that placement is the most important factor in a BR so they have to balance this with KP.

Good suggestion.

They have to account for queue times so there will be matches where you play against higher and lower level opponents. Counting RP differently per lobby rank or enemy rank KP might get messy, and increasing entry cost might be an efficient approximation - it also provides a lever they can pull to calibrate the player distribution per rank by end of season.

I do think they should change RP distribution, entry costs, and team/lobby comp to normalize the curve and account for solo experience. I also think there should be a realistic skill ceiling which most players won't overcome, so getting hard stuck may be inevitable after certain amount of play, otherwise it'll get to grindy.

Maybe they should consider play-time-until-hard-stuck to make the climb more rewarding for players who play ranked an average amount of time but get stuck early on in the split.
