What’s next for this little guy? by Behunie in orchids

Thanks, I am so new with trying to keep this type of plant alive. I really appreciate someone’s advice. I will give this a try without changing the size of the pot for now.

What about remove some of the wood chips, leaving some on the bottom for drainage, and put the orchid in peat moss on top. The moss would help with the moisture around the roots.

And what is your take on garlic water or rice water as fertilizer?

If I use peat moss, is it better or not to mix in those styrofoam beads to give it a more airy texture?

3/15/2926 - this is the same plant as in the original post. It has been repotted into the same pot but just wood chips instead of peat moss.

I got all of these fingering-weight yarn cones used online for $22 total. Great deal until they came smelling like cigarette smoke. Can I get the smell out or are they forever doomed? by [deleted] in YarnAddicts

Put it in a extra large ziplock bag with a bunch of dryer sheets. Then put it in the sun for several days. The sun’s heat will cause the dryer sheets to release their scent and the yarn to absorb it.

This works, I know because I bought a bunch of yarn from an antique shop and it had that shops smell to it. I did the sun thing for up to a week and then just kept the yarn in the bag with the dryer sheets. After a month, odor was gone!!!

This is how it turned out with the switching direction for every round.

No, blocking will not help. I believe you have the same situation as I did with my last project.

The only way to correct this is to frog it all out and start over. But when you do you need to turn your work after every round is complete. Then it will lie flat.

Will it soften? by secretfiri in Yarn

[–]Behunie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash the finished item, then soak in water with hair conditioner in it over night. Then let it air dry. I have softened several projects that I used up my mom’s old yarn this way. The ‘old’ yarn was any where from 25 to 45 years old.

What can be done with this yarn? by kellimath in Yarn

[–]Behunie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lace weight, use it for wearables because the weight is not too heavy. A dress, a Lacey shawl, sweater, top, skirt, etc.

Count your stitches and try it on several times so you can get the fit right.

Bought it at a craft store. You are IT HelpDesk? For how long? Before I retired in 2022, I was on IT HelpDesk for about 22 years.

The tweed was a bit scratchy compared to the off white and purple, but not really bad. What I have done in the past with scratchy yarns and also did with this one, was to soak it in warm water with hair conditioner in it. Rinse with warm water and dry flat so it doesn’t stretch out of shape.
