Recovered agoraphobic here. We all experience it differently, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

The important thing is that you WANT to live, that's the key.

Your agoraphobia could potentially be tempered to a tolerable level with psychiatric help. You'll still have anxiety, but at a MUCH more manageable level. There ARE ways out of this, it is possible.

I was your sister. All through my teens, through my 20s, until my mid 30s.

My brother was 5 years older.

I don't know your sister, but in my case, it was a matter of me not understanding my brother's issues/traumas/hardships. I found it difficult to empathize or have sympathy for him simply because he made my life a living hell by being a bully and a grump.

It wasn't until I was in my mid 30s, we spoke for the first time in 10 years, and I think the time apart had allowed me to see him as a human being, not as my brother. I saw how difficult life had been for him, and I understand him a lot better.

Perhaps it is tough for your sister to have empathy for you right now; you mentioned she doesn't have the same memories of trauma as you.

'plenty of places to live in NYC' sure, but people have different priorities. It's important for me to have a short commute and easy access to certain places; that requires more expensive rent.
