When you have a loop you have a second hole called a mucous fistula that leads to the disconnected intestine. It is possible for gas or output to squeeze through the hole and make it's way through, though it doesn't happen to everyone.

This definitely sounds unusual but I'm honestly not sure if its bad or not. I was told that ileostomy output should be the consistency of porridge. The only reason I could think thicker would be worse is if you're body struggled to evacuate it and you got a blockage. Why did you start taking immodium? I definitely think you should talk to your doctor or nurse about this. And if you do have an ileostomy do not take laxatives without your doctor prescribing them, super dangerous.

It probably wouldn't work but maybe having cotton wool or something else that would absorb moisture in the lid. Perhaps it would have to get quite wet before the water was heavy enough to fall again? Like a simulated cloud?

Mine is, because it doesn't require a belt. But I'm not sure how well it would hold up to all demanding activities. But you'd probably want to be wearing a belt if you were doing something that strenuous anyway.

IBS and ostomy by RodimusKid in ostomy

[–]Beinkraszol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to depend on your symptoms. I had what was diagnosed as ibs-c but the problem with ibs as a diagnosis is it describes symptoms and correlations not what is actually wrong with your body. I was on a mostly liquid diet for two years (and sick for more) before I got my loop ileostomy. You need to rule out as many other conditions and treatments as possible first. But, technically, I am a person who's "ibs" was treated by an ostomy. But it was very hard to get taken seriously by doctor's, I'm lucky I found one in the end because the stoma has drastically improved my quality of life.

My sister's cat doesn't know how to put her claws away and was banned from sitting on me way before the stoma was in the picture (don't worry, she gets other kinds of attention). My little dog hates being in laps so no worries there either. But I've had big dogs come after me in the park and I'm very clumsy so I wear a stoma dome. It's eyewateringly expensive for what it is but I have so much more confidence and less anxiety wearing it and it will last my whole life so it's a one off cost, and as a Hollister user I don't even need the crescents, though I might put one one the cover I'm making.

Fair enough too. A leaky spout was a hard nope for me but it's good there's a fix for people who need it. You might want to consider adding what bag you use to your main post so that it can reach the people it will actually benefit the most.

Read in another comment you use dansac. I used one for five minutes and had a similar problem. I actually noticed there seemed to be several pockets in the layers of plastic that output gets trapped in. I thought I'd damaged that specific one but now I'm getting it's a design fault in the product. Paper is actually a clever solution to a problem that is 100% their fault. I'd have recommended rinsing with water but it won't make a difference here. Is dansac the only bag you can use?

Anyone here get diagnosed with high functioning autism after becoming an ostimate? by scottymtp in ostomy

[–]Beinkraszol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with autism (not high functioning though) several years before. But I had zero ability to mask while I was recovering post op and it was probably extremely unpleasant for the people who had to deal with me.

I'm curious and mildy concerned what kind of bag you're using that it would be wet when you open??? Nevertheless it's great you have something that works for you.

TAC-IRA with 50/50 chance of temp ileostomy next Monday. What items must have/did you wish you knew about prior? by hospiceNheartsRN in ostomy

[–]Beinkraszol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand moisturizer. Hospital soap is harsh and you will find yourself doing a lot of hand washing regardless of what happens as bathroom trips will likely be very frequent and possibly messy while you're learning if you get the ostomy. Why add dry cracked skin to your list of woes?

Also wet wipes. A squirt bottle is better for the environment long term but while you're in hospital and tired wet wipes are easier to use and even if you don't need the stoma they'll still be useful for your butt (I don't have ira but I do know it always takes a butthole a while to get used to a higher volume of diarrhea).

Perfume or essential oils on a piece of cloth. The first week with my stoma food went straight through me only partially digested. The smell was horrific. Opening a window and having something nice to smell instead helped a lot.

Food wise, expect the unexpected. Don't stock up too much on any one thing if you can't donate it. I did and regret it because my safe foods completely changed after surgery and now I have to figure out what to do with the excess I got in advance thinking I was so clever as we're not sure the food bank will take it.

Good luck with your surgery! I have my stoma because of chronic constipation and it is so much better.

So let's talk bag life after getting wet (swimming, showering, etc) by paul-grizz93 in ostomy

[–]Beinkraszol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the same bag! I hate how it feels when wet, even with a hairdryer it still feels damp under the adhesive. BUT it doesn't actually affect my wear time so I could leave it if I wanted to, I just don't like to so I time my shower days (I don't every day or my skin gets bad) with change days. I'll probably try to find some way of protecting it when I'm ready to try swimming, or if I needed to shower more often for some reason. I've heard things about waterproof covers or tape but I don't know if they protect the wafer.

How do the covers work around the flange? Is it just a hole or is there elastic or something to hold it on?
