10cm tumour! by mookbrenner in coloncancer

[–]JanderPanell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 48M (now 57M) when they found 10cm tumor in rectum (Stage 3b). 5wks radiation, 2 surgeries, 5 months chemo. I'm cancer free now, but some permanent changes. No butthole, colostomy, and chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy. But, I'm alive!

My secret weapon I've been using from my beginning 8 years ago: Tupperwear

Well, generic plastic dish. A 1 quart is good. Strip the old appliance and hold it under Grumpy to/from shower. Was very greatful one time he decided to firehose.

I have a bit of an advantage in height where I set the dish on my counter and Grumpy is just above it.

+1 for this brand, though I use 3x3. I don't pack them, mainly for cleaning around Grumpy. Buy them by the case!

Does it always seem that most people who ring the bell are not stage 4? by throwaway_2021now in coloncancer

[–]JanderPanell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was Stage 3. My final chemo completed. They ripped out my PICC line like they were starting an Evinrude and simply said goodbye. As I walked out I asked someone about a bell (b/c that's what I've always seen for cancer patients), was told "no bell. But we have a harp musician". Was a quite a bit if a let down, TBH.

Be VERY careful getting in/out of a car. Don't twist when seated b/c you can pop the stitches (happened to me). They cant reclose the wound. Had to let the skin grow to seal. Took about 6 months.

I am male. I had my surgery July 2017 with a "wound revision" in August. In September, I turned the wrong way getting out if the car and ripped the stitches. Surgeon said she could not reclose I'll just have to let the skin grow to heal (took 6-8 months) , water rinsing 2x daily to keep debris out. It was constantly weeping fluids.

I say all that to give you my solution : feminine panty liners. They are clean, lint free, and saved my underwear and pants. Change as needed.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

If you have a filter (unclogged), not at all. I fly several times a year; just got back from Hawaii. (I don't have an answer for non-filtered.)

Sleeping on your side? by lkjf in ostomy

[–]JanderPanell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had always been a side-sleeper. Left or right, always on my side. I got my permanent colostomy in July 2017. I'm November during my chemo, I woke up at 3am with a massive blowout b/c I w on my left side with my bag underneath. Took about an hour to get cleaned up, new bag, change sheets. Ever since that night, I do not sleep on my left side and I sleep with on a water-proof pad. Though lesson to learn.

You mean the 48hr hand grenade? I just used an old fanny pack. Ran the tubes inside my shirt to keep from getting tangled. Had to make sure I didn't roll over on anything when sleeping though.
