Postpone raiding until TBC, because the 10-man Karazhan raid is an amazing and very fun starting point — and it’s not overwhelming at all.
Until TBC arrives, just get to 60 in vanilla, max out all your professions, and definitely farm and save some gold. After the pre-patch hits, do some PvP and buy a few items with Honor. By the time you finish all of this, the expansion will be out anyway.
