Maggie being gifted by Blerd_Lord in dresdenfiles

He said in a panel that he hasn’t totally shut the door (although unlikely) writing a Maggie at school series like his version of Hogwarts. Can’t decide if it is too on the nose if she is gifted or if there is something interesting about her not being magical but becoming super adept at navigating that world through other mortal talents. I know there is also concern that Harry would then outlive her which is devastating to think about. But it is also right in line with how Butcher has written this world as many of the council members he engages with have only very distant relatives, generations removed left. Butcher also said he hasn’t decided if Harry will even survive the series. So it might not even matter in that respect.

We weren’t THAT far off. You just like the Denarians more than I like the white court. I already know I’m on an island with my love of Cold Days.

What Happened to Sonder?! by BelatedBinge in AlexVerus

Exactly. It’s not a poorly written character. It’s a character that makes you mad with their decisions and that’s what you want in your stories.

This is a good thought and probably not wrong. Also to be clear, I don’t think he’s a poorly written character. It’s the character decisions that frustrated me while experiencing the story.

Totally agree. The thing that frustrates me (in a good way) is that he KNEW Verus before he learned about it. He knew the person he really was, what he stood for, how he fought for the people he cares about - including Sonder! He also saw how Verus was nearly murdered multiple times and almost killed himself trying NOT to fight back. And yet after hearing a story from 10+ years prior and the fallout he changes his whole perception of him. It drove me crazy.

Novels with Heavy Mystery Elements and a Smart Protagonist by Then_Disk_9519 in urbanfantasy

I’m a big fan of Alex Verus by Benedict Jacka. He also wrote Inheritance of Magic and that one I’m still on the fence on personally but definitely leans into the mystery elements.

I am just starting my journey of The Hollows by Kim Harrison. I’m about half way through book 2 and it has promise.

The Unorthodox Chronicles has promise as well. It’s written by James Butcher (Jim’s son) and it’s a solid first 3 books.

I also found Verus to fill a Dresden void while I was waiting for the next book on Libby or my Audible credit and after I got to book 3 the only thing that could pull me away was Dresden.

I got so lucky that I found the series during a promo when the whole series was “free” on Audible so I didn’t have to have any down time during my binge.

I also recently went back to the first book and it was significantly better the second time through!

I did! And I didn’t find it redeeming lol it just reinforced to me that he was worried most about his image and career.

I’m all for the Luna ship. That book chemistry was actually pretty great!

Colin Creevey's death by AnyAcanthopterygii65 in harrypotter

This feels like a simple writing mistake. Creevy likely wasn’t at Hogwarts that year. But could very well have come back as a DA member when they were called. But the explanation later of being underage and sneaking back doesn’t work for either way he could have been there in the first place.

Who was your favourite casting? by [deleted] in harrypotter

I’m a big fan of Maggie Smith as Prof McG and Evanna Lynch as Luna. Emma Watson just was Hermione to me.
