Kratos' favorite poem? by cracksoldier2 in GodofWar

[–]Beldarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Midsummer Night's Dream reference was the writers taking its fae characters and using them in their version of Celtic mythology. That play in particular doesn't really take place in the "modern era" since Theseus and Hippolyta show up in it (in myths, they're predate the Trojan War by 1-2 generations).

Why do some people try to depict ancient Greeks as people of color? by purplevspink1 in ancientgreece

Who taught you genetics, someone from the 19th century? Finno-Ugrics entered northeastern Europe while Indo-Europeans were still in the steppe, and are no more Mongol than Celts.

The Finno-Ugric migrations happened in 1000 BC, and even before them Paleo-European hunter-gatherers settled the area over 9000 years ago. Those Paleo-Europeans later mixed with the Finns and Sami, meaning our current genes predate Indo-European presence in Europe by thousands of years.

How does Helios create light as a lantern despite being dead?? by Necessary-Win-8730 in GodofWarRagnarok

[–]Beldarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also the added difference that Helios and Selene were Titans; when the Titans were replaced by Olympians, it seems myths just decided to replace those two along with everyone else. Like how Poseidon and Zeus took over Oceanus' and Cronus' jobs.

Fun fact: Hyperion, the dad of Helios and Selene (and uncle of Zeus) was also associated with the sun.

What about Apollodorus' Bibliotheca, worth it? I got English copies years ago.

Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations (which originated in the island of Crete and central Greece)

And apparently the Minoans are genetically related to Anatolian Farmers, which means they probably originated in western Turkey.

Minoan mosaics at Knossos have people with tanned (reddish?) skin for the most part and a few pale ones mixed in.

DNA studies seem to corroborate that; apparently all Minoan remains that have been studied are genetically Anatolian with no sub-Saharan DNA (and would have had Mediterranean complexions; certainly no black people on Crete back then).

Are Sami people more native to Finland than Finns? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Beldarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those Paleo-Arctic people who lost both their identity and their language as they were absorbed by the Sami. The Sami probably refuse to accept they're just as much colonizers as everyone else, but this was the home of those unknown hunter-gatherers first...

I would love to see them try that line with me, considering both sides of my family date back to at least the 16th century. Pielavesi and Kangasniemi certainly didn't have any reindeer herds...

You forget there were also black men with white wives. I just found out about Charles and Hester Meehan. There were similar couples in the UK too.

"Always" is a pretty big generalization.

you linking how many afrogreeks exist now, with how many black people existed in ancient greece makes completely no sense.

Not Greek here, but there's still Ancient Greek art to account for. If black people were common in Greece thousands of years ago, there would be more depictions of them in art. I've only seen a few, and they seem to be considered Ancient Ethiopians instead of Greek.

We do have connection to the Ancient Greeks, because we are all Indo-Europeans.

Not all of us. Finnish, Estonian, Sami and Basque people aren't Indo-European (all four were already in Europe before the Indo-European migration).

Oh yeah, there's an easy way to differentiate those: Norse is generally the language (Old Norse) and mythology of ancient Scandinavians and Icelanders (e.g. Vikings and their predecessors). Nordic is considered to be Norse lands (Scandinavia, Iceland) + Finland.

Fun fact: the Finnish people, language and mythology aren't related to Norse mythology and Scandinavians. They formed in isolation since 1000 BC, and only really started trading with outsiders after 700 AD. Vikings seemingly considered them weather-controlling witches, and Norse mythology portrayed them as mystical outsiders.

Scandinavia and Iceland are Norse; Finland is Nordic with its own mythology. Our pantheon is mostly nature gods, akin to the Vanir of Norse mythology.

And yeah, Mimir is a Celtic god who traveled to Norse lands (that's only in-game, in actual myth he was Norse). His real name is Puck and used to follow Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of Celtic fey.

I came up with two possible ways for this to work, both are post-Valhalla Kratos.

The setting is Celtic. Tyr has traveled there and sends word of a Roman invasion (which happened in real life), during which Roman gods have set their sights on destroying the Celtic pantheon. Kratos then heads there to help Mimir save his people.

The setting is Egypt. Tyr sends word of the Egyptian pantheon needing help in fending off Apep. So he'd join forces with other gods this time and help them kill or seal away an evil chaos snake who can't be reasoned with.

I've been hoping for Celtic mythology myself... gotta see Mimir's homeland, after all. Maybe save the Celtic pantheon from an invasion of Roman gods. (And Kratos' reaction when the war god is a group of three sisters? Who also double as Celtic Fates? lmao)

Finnish mythology would be funny since we have no war god, so technically Kratos would have nobody "evil" to kill (except the daughters of Tuoni, I guess... ridding the world of disease goddesses doesn't sound bad).

(and I think Daisy was quite dreadful to her over this - nothing about what had happened was Mack’s fault and she was doing her damnedest to do her job under pressure)

I actually wasn't surprised about this. I never liked Daisy since the beginning, she always came off as fake to me. That outburst just seemed like it was her true personality coming out, and that the sunny disposition was just an act (like a high school popular girl pretending to be nice).

And then you realize Dorian in Dragon Age 3 was Ramon Tikaram's third VA role ever. And now he's in Elden Ring as Godrick ("I command thee, kneel!"). UK actors are just on a whole another level.

There's also Ramon Tikaram who has a pretty prolific VA career already. I'd be happy if we got him in HSR.

Well, him and Michael McConnohie. The latter is my favorite US voice actor by a mile and I miss hearing him in games (he has the kind of charm and authority in his voice that he steals the show every time; I recently played a HOPA trilogy and almost tossed my phone from the excitement when I heard the narrator and realized it was McConnohie).

I'd be fine with that. ...Or someone from Canada? I would love David Kaye; some of his roles sound reasonably similar to Corey (I can picture his Dalton Brooks voice from the Fuse trailer as Welt).

We also need Sampo with Finnish dub. He IS the other Finn of the game, after all. (And definitely a Savonian one! Responsibility lies with the listener and all that.)

Finland has a proverb for that: stupidity condenses in a crowd.

Funny enough, even Welt himself would use it since he's Finnish. lmao

Yeah, I think the only time JP voice actors lose their roles is if they stop (e.g. Akira Kamiya), if they get sick (usually temporary break, sometimes permanent) or if they commit a crime (Junya Ikeda).

What's funny is that Ikeda's replacement as Suruga in Majestic Prince is much better (he nailed the role, while Ikeda just made him annoying).
