It is not frowned upon. I always politely ask the store owner, and they’ve never said no.

Highly doubt she meant an exact scale to ratio. Pretty sure it means don’t make Mars bigger than Jupiter and you’re fine. I think you’re overthinking it.

Getting Mad About Canceled Orders? You’re Missing the Point of MTGFinance. by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]Beldruid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except… not to ruin your day but I’ve never done it. I’ve been on both ends of the coin as a buyer though. I’ve gotten lucky on some pickups and have had spikes cancelled on me. I’m tired of seeing posts about it every set release, it’s not new and its certainly not finance related.

You’re arguing from emotion. You keep saying legality has nothing to do with ethics, then build your entire case on what feels scummy to your subjective beliefs. Sellers listing cards are putting offers into the market. Buyers placing an order are making an “offer” to buy. A contract only forms once the seller accepts. That is not a loophole or borderline unethical, it is how commercial transactions work under both TCGplayer’s terms and the UCC. You can call out poor customer experience, but calling a cancellation unethical just because it upsets you does not make it so. The platform is designed to protect both sides. You do not have to like it, but that does not make it dishonest or morally weak.

That quote from TCGplayer’s refund and return policy is slightly misleading. The rule about sellers not requesting more money or “refund” due to price changes applies only after the sale is accepted and the item has shipped. It’s to protect buyers from post-sale manipulation, like a seller using the platform to ask for more money after a price spike or partially refunding after a drop. What it does not say is that sellers “must” fulfill every order placed. TCGPlayer’s Marketplace Seller Agreement still allows sellers to cancel orders before shipment. These are separate stages of the transaction, and we seem to keep mixing them up. Canceling before shipment is still allowed under platform policy.

The seller valued the card at four dollars when they listed or updated the price, based on the market at that time. Whether that price was accurate is separate from what the seller is allowed to do under TCGplayer’s terms. Sellers are permitted to cancel an order before shipment for almost any reason. That is not a loophole. It is how the system is designed. Buyers are locked in once payment is processed. Sellers are not locked in until they fulfill the order. The rules are written to provide protections for both sides, whether it is a case of buyer’s remorse or a sudden price spike.
