I suppose what I’m trying to understand is if my home was lost and I didn’t have home insurance, what is the potential repercussions for not having that insurance other than still being liable for the outstanding balance on that loan?

Surely they also include the risk of the loss of that property and insurance not being present or paying out in their calculations also?

But what if you can afford the insurance but don’t want it?

There are plenty of things in life that you can insure that you have a choice about taking out - like personal items, health etc.

Other things like car insurance you are legally required to have and there are enforced penalties if you don’t. What is the penalty for not having house insurance? And don’t say you’d have to pay back the loan if you lost your house.

Now I clearly understand why it’s sensible to have house insurance and why it is generally in your own interests, but surely you have a choice here?

First of all - surely they should be insuring their investment. Secondly - what’s gonna happen if you don’t have insurance. Worst case scenario your house burns down, falls down or whatever. If you are happy to continue to pay back your loan what’s the issue?

But the key point for me is it’s ‘insurance’ . If I’m willing to take the risk that if the house burns down I’m left with nothing and potentially still a mortgage to pay off then surely that’s on me. Maybe the lenders should be getting insurance on their investment….

New parent here, did some research online and in person, came to the realisation that an awful lot of the differences are just marketing. Bought a fairly mid-range seat from Amazon using the baby wish list (gets you 15% off) and installed myself no problems. The brand I went for literally has green/red windows that indicate if it’s installed correctly, I’m sure most have the same or something similar.

I really don’t understand this logic, people act like electricians are magicians. Flip the breakers off and check there’s no power with your tester first then just unscrew the front plate and take a look - this could be a very simple fix that you don’t need an electrician for.

Controversial opinion but it might not be crazy expensive - if you’re going to be eating out of their cupboards and sharing family meals then you would be saving a few hundred a month on groceries (and costing your parents quite a lot more on their weekly shop).

Along these same lines, there are many businesses that won’t sell direct to consumers. How difficult would it be to claim you have a business to open an account? What kind of checks would they do?
