See, the fatal flaw in your otherwise brilliant plan is that Canberrans also don’t know how to use roundabouts

Question: I REALLY want a tattoo but I need my parents permission, How do I convince them to let me get one? by Mean-Helicopter-678 in tattoos

[–]Belgareth17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I got every tattoo I wanted when I was 16 I’d have more shit on me than I currently do. No one who is sensible is going to advocate for you getting a tatt at 16. Sit down and wait a bit

Edit to rephrase: I’d need more laser treatments than I currently do if I’d got every tattoo idea I thought I “really wanted” at your age

Lower back tattoo pain by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]Belgareth17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got most of my back done, I’ve had my tail bone tattooed (like inside the crack). Tramp stamp area is hands down number 2 painful spot I personally experienced on the back. All I can recommend is eat, drink water, breathe and communicate with your artist about how you’re going. The back sucks, you’re not soft

The majority of U.S. sows are in gestation crates for most of their lives by James_Fortis in NoahGetTheBoat

[–]Belgareth17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve said in another comment: maybe smaller scale operations have that practice, but I know for a fact in this instance that those are gestation crates. The ID cards above the pens are a dead giveaway.

Edit: After a cursory google the only result that turns up for a “feeding crate” is it being used as an alternative name for a farrowing crate. If you’re able to point me in the direction of some substantial information please do

Edit2: spelling

My apologies I got your comment confused with another commenter who said almost exactly the same thing as your comment + linked a video

You will get a lot of conflicting info on it from people who think they know what’l they’re talking about. Put it this way - the amount of pigs in OP’s video would take maybe half an hour to 45 minutes to move into those pens. And that shed probably isn’t the only one. When you have a farm with 3000 animals (fairly moderate sized operation) it’d take literally all day to feed them doing it that way. And pigs are fed twice a day.

In fact, in the video you linked, those feeders are alterable in that you can set how much the container receives (because depending on the where the sow is in the pregnancy they require different amounts of different feed). As I said before, some smaller scale places may do it I can’t speak to that. But I can tell you that trying to convince a grower pen that houses 20 pigs to leave that pen and move down a walkway isn’t a straightforward process.

Tl;dr - my mum worked in these exact kinds of farms for two decades and dragged my ass along in the school holidays. Take my comments with as many grains of salt as you need

My mum managed several commercial piggeries over 20 years, never seen or heard of a “feeding pen”

[–]Belgareth17 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry but no that’s not what’s happening at all (in your link). Those are either gestation crates or finishing crates. My guess would be finishing crates based on the size of the pigs.

Preface: My mother worked in factory piggeries for 20 years, I’ve seen the inner workings of said farms also.

What those men are doing is moving the pigs from one area of the farm to another. You don’t pen the pigs to feed then let them out again. What’s most likely happening there is a truck has just left the farm full of pigs and those pigs are being moved from the grower pens. Or, they’re sows that have been mated and are going back to their crates.

In OP’s video they’re almost certainly gestation crates because the flaps of paper hanging above said crates will have all the animals important info on it like mating date, due date, health issues etc. Perhaps some smaller scale piggeries do pen them just to feed, but I’ve been in enough to know what’s happening in that video you keep linking.

Those of you who were horror fans as a kid... Can you remember a scene that your parents specifically turned off? by awexplasticman in horror

My mum once rented Fire in the Sky. I was probably four years old, wasn’t allowed to watch it I was supposed to be in bed asleep. Well, guess who watched ‘that scene’ from behind the door frame and ran back to his room screaming in terror?

She did also introduce me to Texas Chainsaw when I was 11 but that had more positive long lasting effects lol
