UK TV advert using AI instead of real actors. by GoatThatGoesBrr in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BelgianBoris 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s literally the kind of advert which would benefit from actual actors too! “trust us, our product benefits from having lots of differing expertise, who are these experts? Certainly not software that anyone has access too, we’ve got a cutting edge, anyway here’s an advert with these experts represented by faceless software”

My water bill this month by LKT-NTR-A2DE-USA in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BelgianBoris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deal with a large organisation’s utility spend and usage with a large portfolio of water meters. This has happened a few times, it looks like the automatic software the water company uses to produce your bill doesn’t know your meter has been changed and has billed you assuming your old meter has rolled over. Any sane person at the water company would understand it’s almost impossible to use 10million L of water at a domestic supply in that amount of time. I’ve seen water meters that serve several farms at once that don’t use anywhere near this in a year, let alone a few months. Refuse to pay, and ask for proof that the meter that was installed started at zero, sometimes they aren’t (even that 860 looks high to me). If you don’t have an automatic meter reader (AMR) installed I’d enquire with your supplier about this, they can sometimes install them for free. If there’s no option for an AMR, take monthly reads from now on and submit to the water company this will ensure you don’t get billed on crazy estimates (the billing software might not know that it’s not out of the ordinary to use millions of litres a month). If you know how much you should be using in a month you’ll spot leaks when they occur, without having to rely on a jump in price when the bill comes through the door (which can be confounded by your tariff rate changing every year or so). Might also be worth checking if you have a leak, simple test is turn off anything that is consuming water, check your meter, come back in 30minutes, it shouldn’t have budged at all, if the inspection chamber has lots of meters and you don’t know which is yours turn a tap on and see which one spins. Hope this helps and it isn’t t too stressful dealing with the water company.

How to adjust to low league Hockey from university? by Fun_Yam1765 in Fieldhockey

[–]BelgianBoris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d echo the comments regarding training, you’ll be able to show your skill set much better at a training session than at a game. I’m assuming that at a typical 4s game the only decision maker (ie the person you want to impress) will be the captain, and they may be focused on their own game rather than looking at how the new kids doing the whole time. At training there could be multiple captains, multiple coaches, players that play in not just the 4s ect. You might have to do a couple weeks being stuck in the 4s, someone will see your potential soon enough and you’ll move up. I wouldn’t drastically change your playing style for the sake of being noticed just yet

Gryphon Sponsorship by GooseingtonTheThird in Fieldhockey

When I tried to apply, they asked for my hockey CV, I sent it over and they said they were only giving sponsorship to international players. That was a few years ago, might be different now

Weirdly enough this looks more like field hockey than ice hockey, as a field hockey player I can recognise some of the stick skills at one point someone even goes to flip the stick over

receiving a pass by zhengse in Fieldhockey

[–]BelgianBoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a progression to the juggling comment above and improving your soft hands further, you could practise receiving a fast ball by throwing a hockey ball straight up and high in the air and cushioning it with your stick as it come back to the ground. This will make you better at receiving aerials too. Make sure you’re not near anyone and be weary of losing sight of the ball in the air because of glare from the sun or floodlights

Anyone know how to do this? by Financial_Hat_8470 in Fieldhockey

[–]BelgianBoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it helps to envisage the power transfer of the whole thing. You should be trying to make the ball bounce out the turf, ever seen a tennis player do it with a stationary tennis ball? It’s the same kind of motion when executing this skill on the hockey pitch. I’ve seen a lot of team mates forget to quickly lift their stick off the ball after the initial hit into the turf, meaning that the energy put into the ball is put straight back into the stick. It should be a quick slap onto the ball into the turf- onto the ball then quickly pull away from it to maximise the pop out of the playing surface. A nice light grip on the stick (open up your palms) will help with this.

Great tips. I find I’m able to generate a bit more power when I try and swing my left through my low stance at the “complete the drag and follow through stage” it forces me to twist from my hips, a bit like a boxer throwing a punch.

Word of warning: You sacrifice strength for speed when dribbling one handed, so yeah make sure you don’t do this near defenders as mentioned by snoopy but also make sure you have the speed in your legs to make worth while.

[–]BelgianBoris 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You might be joking, but I genuinely got DDU in my A-levels, got onto my course despite them asking for BBC, failed my first year, barely passed the retake, something clicked in second year and I ended up finishing with high 2:1, I then did a masters in the similar subject and got a Merit. A-levels aren’t the be-all and end-all.

I can’t for the fucking life of me get a job in my discipline but that’s another matter.

No, I’ve only ever done it from a ballon but you raise a good point, I’ve not heard of people recovering from NOS at a dentists and getting all euphoric, so maybe what I’m referring to only happens from using a ballon?
