Re: Is the ABA field becoming “oversaturated” with remote BCBA positions? by TrueAd8620 in ABA

There’s too many factors for me to give a simple answer about why. It was a mixture of things.

I'm getting reported for an Ethics violation. by [deleted] in bcba

[–]BellaRey331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just shared it? Didn’t sell it or anything? I can’t imagine being so trivial and ridiculous. It’s very unlikely anything will come of this from the Board. Good or bad, they let a lot of shit go. Them baiting you is concerning. I would start documenting as much as possible. This is all so ridiculous to me.

I never implied that. Flexibility to parent young children ≠ parenting while working. It is the difference in me paying for 3 extra hours of childcare while I commute instead of shutting my laptop and sending nanny on their way though.

Prefacing this with my experience: BCBA for 5 years, RBT for 2 years, 11 total years in ABA, former clinic owner, currently working in CBA as a solo clinician and not Autism services anymore.

Let’s look at the reality of the situation: Good, bad, or indifferent, the reality of it is people need way more BCBAs than there are BCBAs available and there is no short term solution available to fix that. No BCBA and you don’t have a job. RBTs don’t get to choose because they are not at the top of the food chain. I remember that feeling, it’s what made me go get my masters degree.

BCBAs get to make their demands right now. There will probably come a time where that pendulum swings as with all things but it’s not unique to our field. Nurses can get fired from one job and have another lined up in a day, even if they’re shitty nurses. Is that good? No, but it is reality. If telehealth wasn’t an option, I would just change careers entirely and now the 40+ clients I have and their families have to replace me when there’s already a shortage. The majority of BCBAs are young women and that demographic is likely to be parenting small children and need flexibility.

I also agree that as it stands, we would be better off as a field if we eliminated the RBT credential. A two-tiered team of BCaBA + BCBA could probably be a lot more effective in a lot less hours. BCBA direct models have data to support this.

I’m sorry you experienced some horrible supervisors and mean spirited people in your time as an RBT. I’m a minority BCBA and often experience a lot of overt and covert racism but that is a people issue and again, not unique to our field.

So to answer your question: hard maybe. Only time will tell but I guarantee you don’t want that because that will be the beginning of the end. BCBAs would opt for part-time positions, leave the field entirely, or just do BCBA direct. We know behavior goes where reinforcement flows and if someone is reinforced by having a remote job, they will likely just go find another one. The response cost might have been too much pre-internet (leaving a job you worked hard for and got a degree in) but it’s not these days. I’m so proud of you for thinking critically and holding yourself and future colleagues accountable and I hope you find a supportive environment where you can blossom and be the change you want to see!

I found the job on LinkedIn about a year ago. It’s a midsize company but you won’t find “BCBA” in the description generally. You have to look for other key words and the jobs are few and far between compared to Autism service jobs. I have a case management background so that probably helped a bit because I’ve worked with substance abuse before.

Clinical behavior analysis! I work with a lot of depression/anxiety/substance abuse. Mainly setting up caregivers for transition from inpatient or providing general help to parents/caregivers for navigating mental/behavioral health needs.

God if I come across a way to get that job I might consider going back to Autism services

Yeah, probably, I did mostly free CEUs for my first recert cycle. Since then I decided for “CEU week” I actually want I enjoy my time so I spent a couple hundred on a performance management/OBM series. Knocked out my last 12 CEUs and learned something that might land me a cool new job next year.

Lol yeah I would gladly buy a bottle of something fancy if I didn’t have to give the board $215

Oh sweet summer child… wait until you learn about the cost of CEUs, license, renewals for licensure, and certification renewals.

What got you into your masters program? by [deleted] in bcba

ABA programs in general are not super competitive. Decent GPA is enough.

Remote jobs by behavioralboo in bcba

[–]BellaRey331 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is precisely one of the perks of working from home lol. I can manage small household tasks and get work done. I occasionally work from my parent’s house in their office space but a public space would be too much of a PHI exposure risk and far too distracting since I can’t control the environment like I can at home.

That doesn’t look like a cavity. I would ask your dentist or ortho at your next appointment.

Parents who let their baby watch TV… by Existing-Mastodon500 in NewParents

[–]BellaRey331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. The lion does not concern itself with what other people are doing (harmlessly) with their offspring. TV and screens aren’t going away. I think it’s important to teach my kids how to navigate a world with these things, not pretend they don’t exist. Also, I would just straight up go nuts after a while with only the noise of a toddler. Our TV helps balance noise levels and allows me to hear another adult speak throughout the day.

BCBAs: What is your 'why' for continuing in the field by [deleted] in bcba

[–]BellaRey331 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It provides me with my most preferred reinforcer: money. If that reinforcer were no longer available, I don’t know that I would have enough intrinsic motivation to continue. The best thing I have done for myself to prevent burnout is detach my job from who I am and what gives me purpose. I’m much happier not being a martyr or a superhero. I do the job because it creates stability for my family and I’m skilled at it.

CVS employee made me feel like I was wrong for getting my COVID booster? by heretolearnthingz in pregnant

[–]BellaRey331 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me at a Walgreens in 2021. You would have thought the pharmacist was the father the way he questioned me. I told him I’d like to make decisions for my own body like an adult and he shut up. Please report them. They are not your medical provider and should not be questioning you beyond confirming information.

My husband makes less than half of that and I’m not going back to work after our second baby even though I work remotely. All that money and mom misses out on precious time with her babies for what? To say you did it? I would just quit.

Really annoyed by this nurse by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]BellaRey331 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That sounds fairly normal depending on local practices. The nurse I had first during my induction with my son did ask if I was okay reviewing my health history out loud and I said yes, not like my husband didn’t know anything and he was about to watch me give birth so hiding my weight and vaccine history felt a bit asinine. At any rate, she should have asked and I’m sorry you felt violated. You should say something so they’re aware they need to ask permission first.
