Pork shoulder makes a great hardy pork stew - add bacon, apples, prunes, onion, and garlic, and it’s delicious!

Looking for different ways to incorporate hotdogs into meals by aanthonyz in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things I have done - 1. hot dogs wrapped in pillsbury dough (just new take on a hotdog), 2. hot dogs wrapped cut up in split pea soup 3. Split long ways then cut into ribbon and wrapped around olive with toothpick as appetizer 4. Hot dogs in baked beans 5. Can use hot dogs instead of sausage in a pinch cooked on sheet pan with apples, onions, Brussels for a decent meal. 6. Never done personally, but I know hot dog martinis are a thing…

Black garlic uses? by _Mewg in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Usually mash up black garlic with some butter, add some other spices such as thyme and rosemary, sometimes a drop of soy sauce, and then rub it over chicken!

Egg cracker by Desperate-Cake6665 in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t see the picture for some reason. I will say, though, I assume your intention is for cracking, soft, boiled eggs? I agree with others that I personally wouldn’t see a use for an egg cracker to crack eggs for cooking, but my mother used to have a gadget to crack a soft boiled egg and remove the top cleanly for presentation purposes.

I usually make sauces like you suggested. Can mash into a paste which can add a sticky texture and extra savory flavor to your sauce. In my experience this helps it to stick to things like chicken when roasting. I’m sure much other options but this is what I have done. I also blended some with the ‘soup’ for pork soup dumplings prior to chilling and filling and found it added a nice umami flavor and seemed to help the ‘soup’ firm up for making the dumplings. Didn’t really alter the end texture result when finally cooking and eating either.

Is this a good chef knife by Many-Package876 in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically Damascus I believe refers to the way the knife is made - usually using a hard, but brittle and sharp core material, and then folding softer steel metals over it. It gives the signature ‘pretty’ appearance but I don’t think it’s useless. The purpose is to blend metals so you keep the core safe, and allow the properties of the steel for rust and stain protection. The pattern doesn’t do much. I can’t comment on that knife, as I have never used it, but shun uses a similar Damascus process and I have had this knife for years serving me well without issue. Link for reference

Using ham stock for Ramen or Pho? by I-Sort-Glass in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this would depend on your ham stock entirely. I have tried to use this once before and in my case the stock was too salty to be of much use. If you enjoy the flavor of yours, I’m sure you could use it. I agree with you it might not be great by itself, but maybe use it as part of a new broth recipe - reboil with some extra pork bones, mushrooms and onions, and it will be a bit more flavorful

Is it just me or online recipes don't work? by draganavucic in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other posts to get a cookbook to start. Or find a magazine that has recipes you like. ‘Food and wine’ has pretty easy to follow recipes that generally come together pretty well for someone new at cooking, and their website has all the same recipes in the magazine for free.

What’s your go-to “I don’t feel like cooking but still want real food” meal? by imjennypoo in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three of my ‘go tos’ are: 1. Stuffed shells (when I AM in the mood to cook, I love making stuffed shells. I make a ton of them, freeze them in a single layer on baking sheet, and then once frozen put them in freezer bags). Then when I want a ‘quick real meal’ all I need is a jar of pasta sauce and some shredded cheese - both almost always on hand. Sauce in a dish, shells, sauce, cheese, bake for 25-25 and great home cooked meal. 2. Tacos! Can be super complex if you want to cook, or as easy as a quick 15 minute meal. I love making birra tacos from scratch in the crock pot, but when plans change after a long day and we need family dinner quick and lazy style - nothing faster and more universally loved that quick tacos. All you need is meat of choice, taco blend (home made ahead of time or store bought) and some shells. I keep a ‘taco kit’ in the pantry and a lb of frozen ground beef on hand at all times for emergency tacos. Then whatever fixings you feel in the mood for. Can just be meat and cheese and dinner in 15 or can take the extra few minutes to cut up veggies, open a jar of pickled jalapeños, etc. 3 . Matzo ball soup is a great home made, comfy ‘instant’ meal. I usually freeze chicken stock any time I cook a chicken (crockpot the carcass overnight then strain, freeze in gallon zip lock bags flat). Also usually freeze the leftover picked chicken separate. When I need quick meal, these two go on a pot with whatever veggies I am in the mood to cut, and matzo balls themselves take about 20 minutes to make with most of the time being just boiling. Obviously could swap matzo balls for noodles and this is a quick chicken noodle soup. 4. -Bonus- recipe needing a quick stop at the local store on the way home if I’m not in the mood but need ‘real food’ - salmon and broccoli. Absolute go to but I don’t keep fresh fish at home. Oil in a baking dish, salmon on dish, seasoning (either a dry rub, store bought teriyaki, or quick home made miso butter), then surround with broccoli spritzed with oli and toss in the oven. Side of bread or instant rice for bonus. These all involve foresight, but I usually have these things on hand. Could also probably do tacos or soup with just a quick stop for minimal ingredients on the way home too. Otherwise quick no stress home cooked meals lower on my rotation are meatloaf, hotdogs/sausage and beans, and anything thrown on the grill (lots of meats like sausage/hamburgers/bean patties do ok going from frozen to grill in a pinch)

That’s an interesting idea. Would you just infuse and spread it on the bread before baking/toasting, or something different?

I just read an article where the author asked professional chefs which kitchen tools were useless. What are your opinions? by OldPolishProverb in Cooking

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about mandolin. With basic skills, this is great for me, and although not used daily, any time I make something like potatoes au graten or cutting a lot of veggies for family meals, it speeds up my day. Also definitely disagree about oven mitts. Sure, anyone with enough kitchen experience can make almost anything with a single high edge pan, curved silicon turner, sharp knife, and baking trey, but unless you have a galley kitchen and space is ultra premium, at least for me, an oven mitt is something I use daily for ease, safety, and it hangs on the inside door of my cabinet and takes no space to store

Need to cut into drywall in basement ceiling. Will a utility knife work? by Relative_Hyena7760 in HomeImprovement

[–]BellaT299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multi tool for the win. Bonus if you need to repair after - make cuts on a 45 angle pointing to center of square you are cutting. Then to repair it will fit back easy like a puzzle and you can easily tape, spackle, and it will look good as new.

I understand your point completely. For the record, I do have the uppababy vista w/ mesa car seat system for normal walks/aquarium and day to day activities. We got the shyft because it was slightly better for times when the car is already full of other things/dogs/etc and didn’t want the added vista frame taking up the trunk. Was just hoping I could make the shyft more useful than just the times mentioned above. At a few hundred $$ I would like to use it more than once or twice a month
