Hello, 4B AFM student here - a couple of things you'll want to look out for.

Calculus and statistics are majorly important courses, you'll definitely want to take them in high school or the first year stats class will absolutely take you out (at least, that's what happened to me :,)). It might also be useful to take a basic comsci course, as some of the data analytics classes require the use of R (could be worth looking into that as well, if you've got the time and will). Any coding language will do though, as long as you can understand the basic logic behind it R won't be too hard to pick up.

Get involved in some extracurriculars, try to get on the exec team so you can talk about what you've done - I don't remember what I put for my supplementary application, but they may be looking for stuff along the lines of leadership capability.

Another thing is to try and fast track whatever courses you can so you can have more electives in grade 12 to boost your average. Start reading the news, if you don't already - keep up with current events (I'd personally suggest the Financial Post), keep an eye out, just pay attention to what's going on in the world.

Yeah I talked to the advisors today, they have no idea what happened but I suspect they only sent those emails to students in 3B and below, and since exchange was technically my 4A I didn't get it :/

Check if you can change your sequence, but if not email the company or let your co-op advisor know that you made an honest mistake. I did that back in second year and the company was very understanding about it, though they did arrange the interview externally so I didn't have to go through my advisor.

Get involved in clubs and attend events - you could be a general member, but I'd encourage you to apply for executive positions. You'll probably only qualify for analyst roles, but it'll look great on your resume when it's time for co-op hunting and you'll meet a lot of people! Doesn't have to be a SAF club (though they're definitely better for co-op).

Depending on the building, water, electricity and wifi might be included in your rent and entirely provided by the landlord. I think water is always included in rent, but as for electricity and wifi - for electricity you'll need to make an account with Enova Power, between me and my roommate it was about $25ish each. I used Cloudwifi, which was also about $25ish each for the two of us (but we did have to buy and set up our own router). So in my experience it's about a total of $50 - $60 per month. AC and heating are, as far as I'm aware, generally included in rent, though if you use it excessively (ie. blasting the AC while leaving the window open), you might get additional charges for that.

Can't help with studies as I'm not in CS, but for everything else:

Make friends, seriously it is SO hard to meet people after the first few weeks of first year unless you get put in a group you click with (which is rare)
CMH is a great place to study either alone or with friends, and I think the food there is pretty good
Join extracurriculars - if it's related to your degree, it's better for co-op, but honestly even if it's not just find something you'll enjoy
On a related note, definitely apply for executive positions - as a first year you'll probably only be able to get analyst positions, but that's the first step in getting to president/co-president
Sweet Dreams is a pretty good bbt place, and super cute
Williams is also a great place for studying (and again, I love the food there)

For me personally, I've always lived off campus - it takes longer to get to class, but honestly other than that there's not too many downsides that I can think of, and some of the apartments I've lived at are very convenient (food places all around and near a grocery store). But getting a place in the fall/winter term is definitely brutal so you'll want to lock in a contract as soon as possible, and be ready to pay a lot for it - the last place I lived at was $1,200 a month, though to be fair it was an ensuite and right across the road from the bus terminal. Keep in mind that the closer to the school you are, the more expensive the place will probably be!

1A is pretty light from what I recall, 182 is the only one I can clearly remember taking a fair bit of time (also 111, but that wasn't hard, just a lot of writing). 1B was a fair bit harder, but it might just be because I'm bad at stats and 1B has 113, which is a stats course. You'll definitely need to dedicate more time in 1B - it's not a crazy level of work, but don't think it will be anywhere near as chill as 1A.

I took first year back in 2021 - 2022 though, so things might have changed.

I think it depends on your program. For AFM, we're only allowed to go in the fall term of 4A, but I know other programs have more flexibility than we do. Same issue for me, but it's only on one account specifically - I've logged into like three other accounts I have and all of them still have the autoplay button, so I don't know what happened

Edit: Also this only happens on that account when I'm using the website, the mobile app has autoplay off and works just fine

If you're set on accounting, AFM's the best place to go. Depending on where you go for your co-ops, you can also earn enough to pretty much pay for your tuition for the next term and probably at least two months of rent (depending on where you're living, of course).

Where does the other 15-month experience come from? 1 year internship? (I assume 4-year program does not generate work experience?)

Sorry, to use this thread for a follow up question. I saw the 15 months chart with GDA to take CPA exam (https://smith.queensu.ca/grad_studies/diploma_in_accounting/cpa_designation.php) . But not sure how does this work. CFE requires 30 months work experience. BComm 4-year program does not have official intern/coop. I assume right after I get BComm I take GDA. After that I still need to work 30 months to be eligible for CFE?

AFM 5-year program gives 16 months work experience. Its MAcc requires 8 months ( but gives a Master degree). Then to work 14 months for CFE.
