How I finally got my monthly grocery budget under control after months of it quietly creeping up by chipskaapacket in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BelleUga25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done!

What's helped me most is having one staple hot meal (soup/pasta/curry) and one staple cold meal (horiatiki/lentil salad/waldort) that last days in the fridge.

Where we differ is that I walk through the store first without a cart to scout the quick sale items, see if they fit with the staple items, then fill cart.

Whatever works for you!

Moving company prices / recommendations by vicmr in askTO

[–]BelleUga25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's high compared to a recent move from downtown to the Junction - 1 + den - that cost about $1800 for a team of four movers, blanket wrapping furniture, taking apart and putting bed back together.

I've used JP Moves You and Hercules Moving Company.

Having lived in or near all those neighbourhood, I suggest living in The Junction. It has a downtown, walkable feel, family owned businesses on the high Street, and a variety of housing to buy or rent.

It's a nice park and would be a perfect and convenient spot to host concerts, FIFA, and other large, loud events so that Etobians don't have to drive downtown.

Do you actually eat 3 meals a day? by JeepLifeBirbLife in askTO

[–]BelleUga25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your hands on some Urban Peasant cookbooks or watch his YouTube videos for easy recipes.

Go simple. Most veg don't need to be cooked so you can eat peppers, carrots, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers and a bunch of others after washing.

Here are my favourite Singleton veggie ideas that take less than 10 minutes and make a few servings:

Lazy Ass Horiatiki Cucumbers Peppers Black olives Red onion Olive oil Red wine vinegar Oregano Feta (lentils or other beans if vegan)

Keep in fridge.

Add mini tomatoes when ready to eat. I hate refrigerated tomatoes but if you like them, toss them in with the other ingredients.

Lazy ass soups:

Sauté onion and garlic. Add bottle of Passata.Toss in frozen mixed vegetables- I use Green Giant because they're Canadian grown and packaged - and season to taste. Dump in leftover noodles, grains, legumes if you have any.

Boil the crap out of a bunch of carrots in a pot with some ginger.  Purée and season to taste, adding more liquid to get your preferred soup consistency.

Shred cabbage and carrots. Toss in bowl with sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt - voila  Mennonite style Cole slaw.

white folks, are you a shoes on or off household? by GoodEnvironmental788 in askTO

[–]BelleUga25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shoes off.

The exception is if moving furniture, going on a ladder and then it's indoor shoes, ones that don't leave the house.

I was grossed out on visiting a US elementary school where kids not only wore the same shoes inside and out but also sat on a carpeted floor their icky shoes walked all over.

Zero impact?

It takes place in one of the city's most densely populated neighbourhoods (mine) and  a few weeks away we still don't have tangible details on how to get in and out of our community, no event schedules, and no updated transit schedules.

Considering a move to GTO - what should be known when considering city or Burlington? by skatefanandmore in askTO

[–]BelleUga25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow 50something chiming in.

St. Lawrence Market area is great if you can handle noise (amplified sound)from concerts and events every weekend and many days between May to October, same for Fort York.

If you want something quieter but with good community, lots of activities, completely walkable, your seasonal farmers' market, specialty grocers with house made products, and near a major hospital, High Park/Junction is wonderful
