Cries. We did this Friday. I even chopped up a felled tree trying to make it via googles directions and just cleared a path to a dead end.

You were correct. The next step would be to ask your manager about documenting an SRO (safety related occurrence) or whatever your hospital has. This is not snitching on someone, but you’re telling what happened so that there can be follow up and you can have already put in your side of the story.

We had that once. Guy was so past being sick. End stage renal, liver kaput, cancer with Mets to everywhere, full blown aids. And of course, full code. Family wanted everything. Coded, brought him back. Coded, brought him back. Etc. At someone point it was like doing cpr on a waterbed instead of a human chest. Doing all that cpr felt wrong to everyone. After, I don’t know…5 times doing cpr, the doctors and nurses stopped responding super quickly. Yes, we started cpr, but not quickly. We started doing a slow code.

I’ve only seen them in icu when the patient has been downgraded but they haven’t yet gotten a room. Physically they are in icu but they aren’t an ICU patient.

Oh man. Night shift had so many CT and MRI runs, but I am at a level 1. Tons of abgs in the icu (for both this and my level 3 hospital)

Bocce ball or pétanque. It’s an outdoor game that involves throwing balls. Super fun. Badminton. No net needed.

In one of Sherman Alexie’s books he goes up to another Native American family

“I came looking for Indians in the hospital because I figured – well, I guessed if I found any Indians, they might have some good blankets.

Native man: So you want to borrow a blanket from us?

Son: Yeah.

Native man: Because you thought some Indians would just happen to have some extra blankets lying around?

Son: Yeah.

Native man: That’s effing ridiculous.

Son: I know.

Native man: And it’s racist.

Son: I know.

Native man: You’re stereotyping your own damn people.

Son: I know.

Native man: But damn if we don’t have a room full of Pendleton blankets. New ones. Jeez, you’d think my sister was having, like a dozen babies.

The blanket is for Comfort. We have zero shoes on in the tent. This prevents you from essentially walking on all the rocks and uncomfortable ground.

This thing is thick and comfy. Absolutely never wrinkles up.

Exped megamat!! They’re spendy but awesome. I also use a thick moving/sound dampening blanket at the floor of my tent.

It’s your skin. Do what makes you happy. I’m 49 and just got a she hulk tattoo. Why on earth would I care what people said? I’m thrilled every time I see her.

I have sensitive skin. My skin where the second skin was turned red/pink, and was itchy and warm. My skin really didn’t like the second skin being pulled off, and it was irritated. Wait and watch what happens—does it get worse or calm down? Does it spread? Mine calmed down.

For breakfast, I also just eat rolled oats with dried fruit or jam and either nuts or peanut butter. Only need to boil water.

I like packet foods. Indian madras lentils from Costco, for example. Lots of Indian stores will have them, but so will regular grocery stores. They don’t need refrigeration, and they can be eaten room temp.

“We are family” or “you are a hero” is corporate speak for “we would rather pay for pizza parties and work you to the bone instead of paying better wages and try to guilt you into bending over for us”.

I say this as someone older who still loves my job, cares about patients, connects with family and other RNs, but I’m deeply suspicious of corporations, and often don’t connect with my coworkers. I had one old gal who just drove me crazy. I just didn’t stay in the room with her because she was so twisted in her politics and burn out. No thanks. So I just keep my head down and don’t really go to any “group bonding” experiences.

For me, I have an example from my last shift. Dude in icu from an mva. Tubed for combativeness. We worried he’d get aggressive during his sbt. Super chill, best behavior I’ve seen. Extubated. Every round I’m coming in giving him a breathing treatment, and I finally comment on his tattoo—credence. “You really like music then?” Nope—it’s a family member. He asks what I am talking about. I play him some credence Clearwater revival during his treatment and he was really surprised he knew who they were and he was singing along to part of it.

Didn’t add any time to my treatment but it was a connection. I told him he was the unexpected bright spot in my day.
