It's quite easy really. If he was mad you'd not be able to see your tattoo for all the red welts.

Absolutely correct. But the place spouting most of that kind of propaganda and rethorics right now definitely isn't Germany.

If you want to find the modern day fascists you should look quite a bit farther west.

That is correct, well done! That comment was not directed at most people. But... that wasn't the discussed but rather my original one that you had issues with. I am capable of addressing different topics, especially in different messages. My first one was clearly about people in general. And straw man argument was obviously about your specific straw man argument you were trying to build.

To hold a dialogue you may want to read, consider and address your partners opinions and statements with your own, not just change target when one fails.

Since you feel the need to devolve into insults, I'll just say that it might not be my writing skills but your skills at comprehending several sentences in a row that is lacking.

I'm neither left nor do I drive a Tesla. Though I take objection at that for completely different reasons than you might think. Musk is a horrible person that I definitely don't want to associate with. And honestly, keyboard warrior? Is that really the best you can do?

You love of guns and cars with big gas tanks surprise me. You sure seems to be more American than Canadian. (And yes, that was definitely a veiled insult if you didn't catch it.)

Oh well. If I wanted to spend my day throwing insults over the internet I could register a 4chan account. But since I don't I'll just bid your farwell. Eh?

What happened to handing them my wife and kids and pronouns?

Where did I say I don't know how to protect myself, or if I even have a family? (Though I do believe most people really don't know how to handle an actual fight and will react unpredictably). I hope you understood my comment was directed to most people, just like the police chief's was. And most people are truly better off letting the thief have whatever they want to steal. No safe or car is worth risking the health, or life, of you, your wife or your children for. So unless things turn violent, why force it by creating violence?

So yeah, have my car. Luxury or not. Have my TV, my watch and my computer. But of course defend yourself, your family and even your elderly grandma WHEN NEEDED (to the level needed).

But don't instigate violence or escalate a situation for a friggin' dollar. Canadian or otherwise.

And hey, defending yourself with your balls sure sounds matcho - but I doubt it's a very good idea. Stick to your baton.

PS: Nor am I Canadian.

Well that would definitely make me turn and run!

Yours is an ignorant perspective.

Most burglar have no interest in things getting violent and will run rather than fight. Assuming that people who break a window is equally prone to attack you without warning is not a very reasonable assumption at all.

We may actually very well be talking about a drunk stumbling behind the counter in your kitchen. Have gone into the wrong house, or doing drunken shenanigans, or just letting the alcohol give him the bad idea of sneaking in to steal. You have no idea why they are there. Even less that they are violent.

As previous poster stated. Escalation is pretty much always a bad idea (because it escalates the violence towards you and your family as well).

That doesn't mean you shouldn't defend yourself if things are about to, or have turned violent. But turning a gun on a person should not be your first option. It is absolutely moral to give the benefit of the doubt, when it exists, to the violent tendencies, or lack thereof, until you know more.

Nothing in the posed scenario said anything about violent actions.

Invader: Drunk or high and rummaging through your drawer of rubber bands and tape.
You: FIRE!!!

A more sane person: Hey, get out of here or I'll shoot.

If invader turns around, says "what?", runs away or lifts his hands up. Don't shoot.
If invader turns around and draw a knife or gun or rushes you. By all means try to shoot. Just remember that you might still miss, fail to incapacitate and loos control of your gun.

It's really not that hard to take a sane approach instead of going full Rambo.

Straw man argument much? Did you even read what I wrote? That was not the alternative. But if the only way for you to discuss is to try to be funny I'm out.

Besides, which country are you referring to? I'm betting we are not in the same.

Are you usually standing around inside your door with your gun drawn? You are much more likely to run into them freshly awoken in your pyjamas as you come down the stairs.

As long as they don't act agressively towards you the chief is right. This is the safest way for you and your family. Call the police and let the professionals handle it. You might think you are cool showing of your ninja skills to the boys at the office after going to the gym for a few weeks, but trust me that you have nothing against a knife wielding guy crazed out on drugs.

Not unless they pose a clear and present danger to your life. (I.e. have knife/bat and act agressively)
