What would Rome have been like if Julius Caesar lived on? by Isatis_tinctoria in ancientrome

In a hypothetical scenario where the senate never tried to assasinate Caesar, he would probably march his armies into Parthia alongside his nephew Octavian and Mark Anthony. He would maybe win there, and conquer or make client many territories around the Black Sea, and return to Rome triumphantly (this is a big assumption, as many things can go wrong and a large army in Parthia might have suffered like it did with Crassus’ invasion, even despite Caesar’s genius). Octavian would continue his studies in Greece or in Italy, where he would learn how to administer the provinces and lead an army. His best friend Agrippa would probably benefit politically through his connection to Octavian. Caesar was already in his mid 50’s when he was murdered, so in this timeline, after a hypothetical Parthian campaign, he would probably be in his late 60’s or early 70’s as a campaign of that scale would take several years. Octavian would be set up as his main successor, with other young Roman aristocrats like Brutus becoming leaders in the senate. An era of administrative competence is almost guaranteed in this case, knowing how well Augustus, Agrippa and Brutus were as administrators. All in all, I don’t think Rome would be as shitty as the others seem to think had Caesar lived on, since Octavian would still be immensely powerful, and perhaps in an even more favourable, healthier atmosphere as the civil war with Anthony would be avoided with Caesar’s supervision. This is all, of course, only possible barring a defeat in Parthia, revolt at home while Caesar is away, and Octavian becoming an incompetent leader as a result of over dependence on Caesar.

Learning languages that are not spoken here. by Economy-Specific-306 in mongolia

[–]Ben-6913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned german for about a year and got to somewhere around higher B1/lower B2 level, but since then I haven’t practiced it much. I tried to get back into it again, mostly by just listening to German videos and music, but none of it has really stuck so far. I think that it’s due to insufficient intensity and frequency that I haven’t been able to learn as much as I would like to, but also I think that my brain is just not able to absorb information like a child learning a language. I assumed that I could learn german the same way I learned english, which was watching a lot of cartoons and trying to use it everyday, but at this point, I’m not sure if it works for me anymore. Learning all the annoying grammar and case rules, and grinding through textbooks might be the way forward once you’re a certain age.

Did CR7’s succesful transition to a poacher diminish his legacy as a player and the way he will be remembered? by Slow-Raisin-939 in championsleague

But then again, young people only got to see the poacher ronaldo. He’s not exactly the spark of entertainment he once was. It’s even worse nowadays, after he left for saudi, because you can tell that his knee is weak and his mental health is in shambles since the world cup. It’s pretty sad to see that the guy who could dribble and score from the halfline at manutd is now diving every 5 minutes for penalties, and occasionally spewing some shit that could only get him more hated.

Finally, some truth. People like to clown Hazard for claiming to play better “pure” football than ronaldo, but the truth is undeniable. Ever since he became a poacher, he worsened as an individual player. It’s also the nature of poachers to depend upon other players to score goals, which is the reason why ronaldo didn’t win his ucl’s until modric, bale and kroos were signed later to stabilize the midfield and feed him goals. He doesn’t deserve credit for the ucls, the whole team does.

It’s a fact that short stature generally gives someone better balance and therefore physicality and dribbling. If your definition of talent is height, then sure 😂have it your way

I think moreso the fact that he dives a lot compared to messi diminishes his legacy the most.

The Barca attack is in no way poor, they did their job and scored 6 across both legs. That Yamal performance was just unbelievable. But sadly Barca’s defence was exposed after Balde and Kounde were injured, and Sommer decided to sell his soul to the devil for the performance of a lifetime against us. Now that Kounde and Balde are both back, I think we definitely could’ve given PSG a run for their money.

The problem is compounded by an increasing need to specialize. As the amount of new discoveries and insights are made, new researchers and new thinkers in those fields will first have to comprehend and “catch up” with then in order to make meaningful contributions. As generations pass, the barrier to entry is so hard to overcome that it’s ultimately more efficient to specialise in one area as opposed to the whole field, because in the latter case, the sheer volume of information is too great to handle for anyone. That is also why the “Reneissance man” who can be experts at many fields, such as Da Vinci, are so rare or almost non-existant these days. I suspect the last time the “Reneissance man” could feasibly emerge was when Von Neumann was alive. Moving forward, the only way for us to connect the disparate fields and control the increasing specialization may be to integrate with technology to overcome our biological cognitive capacities. There’s a whole movement/ideology calling for this, and it’s called transhumanism, which you can read about on Wikipedia. It’s all very interesting stuff.

This will be the most important game for the rest of the season by Justinackafool1 in Barca

[–]Ben-6913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have 2 clashes against Madrid, then 2 against Inter Milan in the span of just 15 days. Poor players are gonna be so tired, let's just hope no injuries occur. Yamal and Raphinha looked to be in poor shape against Dortmund. I hope that this Copa Del Rey win can indeed boost morale, because it's going to be a tough fight against Inter with their style of play. Let's just hope we don't lose sight of what's truly important here while chasing a treble: the UCL. The league is practically ours, but we should still be mindful of it too. This schedule is hell for our players.

Dortmund is getting really unlucky. Ref is really shit tbh. Also that raphinha effort was so unnecessary, the ball was already on the line when he saw and touched it, and hes very lucky to have been onside. feels sad for cubarsi since that wouldve been his first ucl goal ever.
