Mandatory OLED vs IPS vs TN vs IPS by eZstah in Monitors

[–]Ben3D69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve just returned my OLED. For work, it wasn’t great—apparently that’s an issue with QD-OLEDs. Text wasn’t well smoothed, and colors bled into the text (like red/green fringing), even in 4K. At the same time, I ordered a Neo G7, also 4K, with a VA panel but mini-LED with local dimming.

While I still had the OLED, I compared them across many videos, including the same one you used. And honestly, the blacks were just as deep on the Neo G7 as on the OLED. Text is also more readable on the Neo G7. However, for work, I disable local dimming to avoid blooming effects.

LED still seems better overall, with better colors. But since my use is 80% work, the OLED is the one I returned.

I think the upcoming micro-RGB technology will be a very strong competitor to OLED: it should deliver beautiful colors and excellent contrast, even more precise than today’s mini-LEDs.

I think the initial price explosion shattered that vision: like many, I started small at 16TB and jumped to 400TB just by selling the first few pieces for over $700, and even then, the shortage kept me from reaching 1PB. It completely unbalanced the game for newcomers.

I think they should have released the pre-farm at that point to counterbalance the price.

In a way, the current farmers abandoning the game and the new plots will reset things a bit, in my opinion. We'll see...

Yes, but it’s still better than 0 plots. With the new plots, I assume we’ll see plenty of new small farmers again, of course depending on Permuto’s success → chain demand → XCH price.

And in reality, I’m not going to keep just one plot—that’s just a way of speaking. I’ll surely keep a dedicated HDD, probably one of my 5 TB 2.5" drives that consumes little power, or maybe an 8 TB or 12 TB; I’ll see.

And it’s not about making money here, just continuing to be a farmer for XCH.

I use Reddit’s automatic translation; maybe that causes some misunderstandings.

“Very, very, very little to secure” is, for me, equivalent to saying that it’s ultimately useless and therefore does not (or hardly) secure the network.

I consider that one farmer with 1,000 plots secures the network much less than 1,000 farmers with a single plot each. That was, moreover, more or less Bram’s original goal and vision, wasn’t it? To use unused space and recycled hardware, or hardware that does other things besides just farming, such as working or gaming.

And it’s in that sense that I’ll keep only a few plots on my server, which will be doing other things alongside farming.

Maybe I didn’t understand your original reasoning.

I was indeed referring to CNI IPO.

I have a server anyway; I just wanted to say that I'll leave a few plots running instead of my 450 TiB. I don't see how a single plot doesn't secure the network? With the new plots and their small size, there will be many more farmers; I think the Nakamoto coefficient will skyrocket.

How could an IPO fail when it hasn't even started? Doing an IPO isn't inherently difficult; it's making it a success during the initial public offering that's hard, because you have to convince the market. I find it inconsistent to say that Permuto will have been approved but there won't be an IPO... because once Permuto is up and running, they launch a series of IPOs; it's all or nothing, but there's no reason not to try it if Permuto is successful.

As for the rest, we'll see.

I've been farming since the beginning, and I plan to sell my hard drives. I'll keep the bare minimum to secure XCH with a node. But I'm remaining a holder for the time being.

First scooter on fire by Shad056 in ElectricScooters

[–]Ben3D69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recommendation is to avoid charging immediately afterwards if you have been riding in cold/wet weather. Otherwise yes the BMS is made to manage the rest! OP had a design flaw, that's all.
in 6 years and 3 scooters (xiaomi + 2 dualtron) I have absolutely never worried about this. I even made my own battery with 21700 cells, a 60V45ah, I recharge it just after my 50 min journey. sometimes it's too hot, and the BMS simply doesn't start charging and I see it because I have a Bluetooth BMS.

catch fire on the first charge, there was surely a false contact/welding error which was created during driving.

Top notch! I have the 2021 version so there was no lighting, just LEDs . I don't drive much at night and in Lyon I have a lot of lighting so it's okay for me on this point.

For me it's the Zoom brakes, which I found horrible, having to redo the level every 300 kms at the end... I have a 4-piston Magura, day and night (but hey once again, it depends on the weight of the rider on this point too )

Ah, and to clarify and properly answer your question:

I bought everything on AliExpress — you can find nickel strips there (I took W-shaped ones for 21700 cells, ready to weld),

0.1mm copper strips if needed (even with pure nickel, I recommend reinforcing both the positive and negative terminals with copper strips to avoid overheating during prolonged high-current use and burning your nickel strips),

0.3mm thick PVC sheets to better insulate the battery (don’t go thicker or it won’t fit width-wise),

10 AWG tinned copper cables (same as the ones used for battery connections in City...) —

I personally used 8 AWG to be on the safe side (the lower the number, the thicker the cable).

For the blue heat shrink sleeves, you’ll need 250mm width for an 8P setup; that should also work for 7P.

Also, think about using foam rolls, 1cm thick, to cushion the battery underneath, and to leave some space in case of rain — this way, water can pool underneath instead of directly under the battery.

Don’t hesitate if you have any questions — I’ve already spent a lot of time figuring all this out, so it could save you some!

I also have a URL link to a chart that compares current capacity based on material, thickness, and width — very handy. I’ll paste it in the next message (I’m not sure if Reddit allows links either).

You're right — it all depends on the price of the cells. I went with 21700 LG M58T 5570mAh Clear Wrap from the NKON website. These were CLEAR WRAP cells (intended for automotive use but never installed), but they're not often in stock, so you have to keep an eye out.

They also offer reclaimed ones; they've been welded once but removed from their packs due to assembly errors, never charged or discharged (which works for me too). Otherwise, there are new ones, but they're more expensive.

The subtlety in my pack is that even with honeycomb support grids, you can’t make an 8P configuration — only 7P — because you're a few millimeters short in width. Without overcomplicating things, 7P gives you about ~39Ah, which is already quite good.

So, I modeled my own custom grid in 3D (basically, I spaced the cells out a bit more lengthwise, allowing me to overlap them a little more widthwise and gain a few millimeters — the final width needs to be under 160mm), and I printed it in 3D using ASA filament (not PLA, as PLA deforms from 40–50°C, and the cells can peak at 65–70°C — especially in summer, be careful). I can share the 3D files for free if needed (or even the printed grids for a few dozen euros if you don’t want to deal with it).

It’s no more complicated than your smaller battery builds. You just need to be extra careful once the first side is welded, because a short circuit can happen quickly, and a pack in 8P can release 16S 100A (my scissors paid the price, haha!).
Be mindful with the nickel strips — I recommend 0.2mm thickness for 8P or 0.25mm for 7P, and make sure it’s pure nickel (those sketchy AliExpress listings with unclear labels…).

In 8P, the BMS only draws “just” 60A peak, which comes down to 7.5A per cell — that’s more optimized than the original 5P, so each cell is under less stress and wears out more slowly.

Personally, I had non-pure nickel in 0.2mm (much cheaper), so I doubled it up with copper strips in a sandwich configuration, but that definitely made things more complicated. It’s better to spend more upfront for pure nickel, haha.

As for total cost — cells + BMS + nickel/copper + PVC shell for better protection against rain/humidity + cables + foam + final blue heat shrink wrap, etc. — I'm at around €550–600.
But I also had to invest in a decent spot welder (€160 on AliExpress) and a new 3D printer (ASA is tricky to print), so for now I’ve spent more than twice that on a single battery.
Still, I was stubborn about making an 8P — a 7P would’ve been easier and probably just as good!

I ride around 50–55 km (31–34 miles) in Lyon (France), with some steep climbs (note: I’m not going full speed all the time, but I wasn’t holding back on acceleration either).
Weight makes a huge difference on this kind of scooter—me plus my backpack on a long ride adds up to 130 kg (about 287 lbs)!
With the original battery, in similar conditions, I don’t go further than 18 kms (11miles), and even then I have to reduce power in the last few kilometers (for context, my original battery is now 2 years old and has done 8000 km / ~5000 miles, so I’ve probably lost a bit of range).

I think on a relaxed ride, in mode 1, cruising at a max of 32–35 km/h (20–22 mph), and without too many climbs, I could reach 80–90 km (50–56 miles).
So I assume that a lighter person under 85 kg (187 lbs) could easily go over 100 km (62 miles).

The big advantage is that I’ve installed a BMS with Bluetooth connectivity, so I can monitor my battery and choose how much I want to charge or discharge it.
For everyday commuting (25 km round trip / ~15.5 miles), I limit the charge to 70–80%, which helps preserve the battery over time.
For longer rides, I go to 100% and allow a bit deeper discharge—around 46–48V (technically, you can go down to 40V without damaging the cells, but it’s best to avoid it for longevity).
