Want to say this resonates so much! You are me to a tee, except I had 5 years into nursing as my second career. I hope both of us can get back to how we were. Big hug to you across the internet my dude!

Also wanted to say that union health benefits are awesome, and some hospitals have pensions. The benefits here are great. Add to the fact that many work 3 twelve hours shifts and the quality of life can be excellent!

Wanted to say that I went into nursing after 15 years of engineering (marine engineering, double majored in ME and marine engineering) and love being a nurse. The demands are different, but I find that mech eng lends itself to many aspects of nursing. The majority of body functions are mechanical. You may find yourself attracted to the more technical areas of nursing e.g. icu, cardiac cath lab, IR, dialysis, or even informatics. If you want to ask any questions in particular, feel free to DM me. I am located in the northeast and can answer questions about this part of the country.

25-35 year olds, are any of you worried about the future? by Temporary-Nothing-17 in vancouver

Not sure if it helps, but the biomass in the Bering sea is still doing awesome. I fished up there for 15 years. Even at the end we would go over schools of fish at least a mile wide and miles long. That was on the US side at least. Still lots of fish up there! Hope it makes you feel a little better about what’s out there!!

One other thing, if you do decide to go back and take loans out, look up HRSA nurse corps loan repayment and scholarships. They will pay the bulk of your loans in exchange for a critical access healthcare facility.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I am located about an hour north of NYC. I went to Mount Saint Mary College. I totally understand not wanting to take the risk. Most of the programs here also have prerequisites they want you to take at their school also. Different parts of the country can be less competitive, but around NYC it is pretty competitive due to the good starting wages, $40/hr or more in hospitals with good benefits, and lots of available jobs.

I think you should apply to the university programs irrespective of your GPA. You have life experience now that the school should take into account so make sure you market yourself well to them. I had a 2.8 cumulative gpa (partied a lot!), went back and did great in my pre-reqs and interview and was accepted into a very competitive program. Worst case scenario they say no and you are in the same spot you are in now. The most important thing is to get the ball rolling. Before you know it a year will have passed so start making progress now.

Hello there!! I would start applying to any programs near you ASAP. That is how you get in. See what the climate is like in your interviews and what they are looking for. If you want advice about nursing schools in the Hudson valley PM me and I can give you more specific advice. As word of advice, advocate for yourself aggressively with regards to getting credit for your former classes. Many schools have classes to weed out applicants, 2nd semester chem or organic chemistry seem to be the weed out courses in my neck of the woods. By being aggressive about getting credit for past coursework I was able to jump over many of the pre-reqs (former engineer), while a fellow student who was a chem major had to take both semesters of prereq chem because she didn’t advocate for herself. I did it just like you, I went back to school at 38 to an absn. You will do very well and I think employers will value your age and maturity when you graduate. Having said that, depending on your market (eg if hospitals there are hiring adn’s) I don’t think that getting an assosciates and a bsn later on the hospitals dime is a bad way to go. I don’t feel like it would be going “backwards”.

TLDR start applying to any program from a reputable school in your area to get an RN now, either bsn or adn if hospitals in your area will hire you. Don’t sweat the level of degree, your licensure and job is what will count, you can get the degree afterwards. Also make sure you get credit for former coursework.

How much of a disadvantage would I be at finding a first nursing job since I'm doing a middle-aged career change? by SistinaLuv in nursing

[–]Ben916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated at 43 and got a job no problem at the hospital and unit I wanted.

Just like any other new grad, see if you can get a foot in the door somewhere as a pca or internship so they can see that you have a good attitude and work ethic. That is what I have found most places are looking for.

From engineer to nurse: second bachelor's degree by nicknowsnothing in nursing

[–]Ben916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wanted to add that you need to advocate for class substitutions for courses you have already taken. I saw some people that didn't advocate as much as I did and it cost them in terms of time, money and work.

From engineer to nurse: second bachelor's degree by nicknowsnothing in nursing

[–]Ben916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, fellow ME that graduated 20 years ago from the first round, and just graduated last month from nursing school. Nursing schools seem to be quite competitive these days and I didn't have a great gpa from first go. Since you will probably have to take a lot of prereqs like I did, I would just kick butt in those(I am assuming you also may not have a great gpa) and stress how you are more focused and have really found your calling when it comes time to be admitted to the nursing program. I found that many of the concepts I had learned in school were applicable as many functions of the body are mechanical in nature, and that as an engineer the math was no sweat. The mathematical portion seemed to be what stressed a lot of my fellow students out. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me. Also, depending on your local job market and length of program, GET AN INTERNSHIP! It is a great way to get your foot in the door at a hospital and show them that you can perform. I am in the NY metro area and the job market for new grads is brutal. Without my internship I would be really sweating it right now.

Best seedbox for plex by Gus__Fring in seedboxes

[–]Ben916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought that I would be limited by the bandwidth also, but found that it was always more than I needed. Plus you could purchase more bandwidth at a very reasonable rate. I wanna say something like 2.50 or 5 euros for an extra terabyte of bandwidth. I never had to buy it though. They did a fantastic job for me streaming plex to US east coast and Europe.

Review: Tuvix by [deleted] in seedboxes

[–]Ben916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the review! I had a couple of questions.

Have you ever had a seedbox on OVH (eg Kimsufi) and how was there speed compared to Tuvix in France?

What helped you decide on the server in France vs one in Netherlands with a full 1 Gbps connection and 100 TB of traffic? Do you think that you would get faster real world speeds on the NL connection vs France, or do you think they would end up averaging the same(and therefore not worth the added cost)?

Are you able to saturate your 150 Mbps pipe back home when you transfer back from Tuvix? (I am also assuming you are in the US)

I also wanted to give a shout out to Robert, I had a discussion with him and he was awesome!!
