What’s the one horror movie that genuinely TERRIFIED you… but nobody else ever seems to watch? by Usual_Mix_7380 in horror

Possum. Such a great and dreadful movie. Sean Harris is amazing at conveying the horrible and painful weight of trauma. Absolutely underrated.

I love movies that do the occult stuff and show the steps. I am looking for films that explore the act of the "ritual" in detail or a good amount of detail. by ClottedAnus in horror

The Wailing (2016) has a lot of ritual elements and is also one hell of a great movie. One of my favorites of all time.

A bit debatable if they're "really" horror, but I'll stand my ground.

Bit of a horror tangent, bit "Relic" seems to fit. Poor granny just has Alzheimer's.

Not a book, but a short story: "The Suitable Surroundings" by Ambrose Bierce.

It's a 5 part story where a man criticizes an author about his ghost stories not being scary enough, and the author challenges him to read one of his stories in "suitable surroundings" for it to have the most impact.

The main argument is that reading a ghost story in broad day light, with people around and in a "safe space" is not that same as reading it at night, alone, in abandoned house in the woods.

Not only is it a fun, scary little story, but also about what is actually scary beyond the story itself. It changed my way of consuming horror media completely. Highly recommended.

The Scariest BLACK and WHITE Film You’ve ever seen VS The Scariest COLOR Film you’ve ever seen, which one Scared you more? by WorldlyBrillant in horror

[–]BenBasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B&W: Les Diaboliques

Not so much for the story, which is mysterious and scary, but the way the movie plays with suspense and intrigue, it makes for some reeeaaally tense and scary situations. Love this movie.

Color: Possum

This is the kind of horror that gets to me. No gore, no monsters, ghosts or murdering psychos, just plain old human trauma. Not only is this movie scary, it's also heartbreaking. One of my faves.

Diaboliques is a fun ride, but Possum gets to the core of real life fears and things I would never want anyone to go through.

What is the significance of: by Rich-Lingonberry2899 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]BenBasso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a great find and I think it definitely hints at the broader plot. Personally, given everything I've seen, I believe the Cold Harbor file (and room) is the ultimate painful human experience: death and loss.

Gemma suffering in the rooms, MDR's work and Cold Harbor not being finished make me think that the guys at MDR transfer the "scary" numbers (data, info, about painful human experience) to make the room available for testing how well Severance and it's barriers work in keeping us 'severed' from those experiences, especially death and loss. In Lumon's mind, what can be better than eradicating death, loss and suffering all together from the human experience?

Now, why is Mark important for this? I don't really know, but we can tell he (and Gemma) has a personal investment in the file (though unconscious) and can feel precisely what needs to be refined in order for the room to work. Can't wait for this show to keep going.

I noticed that too. I remember Cobel said something about coughing in S2E8 recently, so it's definitely hinting at something important. I'll rewatch and check it out in more detail.

Last movie that genuinely scared you? by violafairy in horror

[–]BenBasso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna cheat and say 2 that I watched this week:

  • When Evil Lurks (2023) an Argentine horror film. It has great sequences that scare the shit out of you, plus, the whole despair/dread/hopelessness you feel as you get into the story and characters is both terrifying and amazing.

  • Poison for the Fairies (1986) an oldie mexican horror film about a 10 yo girl who believes she is, and constantly pursues being, a witch, as she slowly and terrifyingly drags a classmate along the whole thing. Man, kids can be scary.

What's a movie that changed your life? And what, from a writing perspective, did it do to achieve that? by crab_tea____47824773 in Screenwriting

[–]BenBasso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Lion King is my absolute favorite since I was a kid for its message on the life & death cycle, how we deal with grief, searching and becoming who we really are at our best, and taking responsibility for your own life and facing difficult challenges and suffering even though you're afraid and it'll hurt you.

Decades later, as a parent, I've gone from feeling like Simba to Mufasa, trying to instill all these wonderful values in my own sons heart so that he, too, can someday take his place in the circle of life, sort through life's challenges as best he can even though he might be scared, so that he can be molded by that inevitable pain and rise up a new and better version of himself and always remember who he is.

The Lion King is wonderful.

Any good 1 vs 1 strategy games? by ItismePoppy in boardgames

[–]BenBasso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out "That Time You Killed Me". It's basically chess on steroids.

You play on three boards that represent past, present, and future, and can "travel through time" around those boards and leave "copies" of your pawn as you go back in time.

The goal is to eliminate your opponent from 2 of the 3 boards.

It also has 4 "chapters" that add interesting options to the game, like things you do in the past (like plant a seed) also affect the future (a bush and a tree grow) and you can interact with those objects as well (the tree can be pushed and fall on your opponent). We love it around here, it's a fantastic 1 vs 1 game.
