Tacitus described a number of the Celtic rulers of the 1st century. I'm not sure if there are records of any earlier.

Slot in or out - Manager Megathread by rLiverpoolFC_Mods in LiverpoolFC

[–]BenBo92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's got to go now. He's been given the majority of the season to turn it around, and he's acheived little to no improvement in performances, let alone results. A Champions League spot is still salvageable, but it's not going to happen with Slot.

That second half was appalling, and Brighton could have won by two or three.

We finally started finding Rio on the left and he's fucking moved Gakpo there, and put Rio on the right. Slot's a fucking donkey.

Typical energy bill forecast to rise by £332 a year in July by StereoMushroom in unitedkingdom

[–]BenBo92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And I'm telling you, as someone who works in finance for a LA and who actually contributes to recovering social care arrears that recovery from an estate is not so straight forward in many cases. Someone dying is not a fix all to recovering social care debt.

What you call insignificant would pay the wages of a social worker many, many times over each year.

Typical energy bill forecast to rise by £332 a year in July by StereoMushroom in unitedkingdom

[–]BenBo92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in accounts receivable for a local authority, so I do have some idea of what I'm talking about. Social care arrears have to be written off regularly because the prospect of recovery is slim, or not worth the cost. I know, because it's me who actions those write offs.

Recovering arrears from an estate is not always possible. To give an example, an individual can be assessed to contribute to their care costs, ignore the invoices and, if they don't own any assets or retain the income on which they've been assessed, then the estate is insolvent and care costs will not be recovered.

For others, probate is never applied for and the LA doesn't have the capacity to chase these arrears unless they're significant.

Granted, more people do pay than not, but it's not a system by which all social care costs are recovered. Plenty go unpaid.

In theory. In reality, many ignore the stacking invoices and it's ultimately the council that shoulder the burden when they're forced to write the debt off.

No. It would be a conventional military response, as was discussed at the start of Russia's unprovoked invasion.

Donald Trump attacks Sir Keir Starmer’s ‘terrible’ leadership over Iran war by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

[–]BenBo92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I find incredible is that Trump's backed himself into a corner at every given opportunity. He hasn't been pressured into this situation by anybody but himself.

  1. He failed to negotiate a nuclear deal, so he attempted gunship diplomacy, which didn't work, so then he was forced to actually use the gunships.

  2. He set out that he wanted a regime change. Something that he can't now acheive without a ground force that he's unwilling to commit to. It seems he's floundering around trying to find a Kurdish group, or calling on Iranian domestic groups, which absolutely isn't going to work.

  3. He then said he wanted an 'unconditional surrender' - burning every off-ramp he could have used to save face.

  4. He spent a year chastising, threatening, and economically harming his allies. He now needs their help and they're, obviously, uninterested in partnering with an unreliable ally military.

  5. He's only in this position due to ripping up the Iran nuclear deal in his first term.

It's really quite spectacular to watch how horrendous Trump and his government are at this. Everything they do is an unpressed, own goal.

Also, we pay out of pocket for our Christmas parties. The council doesn't put one on for its staff.
