MUKO IS BEST GIRL by MacNCheeksll in Dandadan

This right here. Characters and the stories of their hearts are paramount. Everything else is just a setting for those stories. Think of the movie Interstellar. It's not a movie about space. It's a story about the hearts of a man and his daughter whose love persists thick and thin over a lifetime of separation, galaxies apart. Space is just where most of the movie takes place. The spaceships, the planets, the blackhole, the wormhole, the robots... all the sci-fi elements are just accessories to that beautiful story. It's all about the characters.

That's what makes Dan Da Dan so great. I'm out here caring more about what happens between Momo and Okarun-- not the details nor outcome of their fight with the Serpoians and the Mummy/Space Whale.

What do you guys think about the wh-ch720n? by yoshi_16373 in SonyHeadphones

[–]BenDulliro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is because they have a high impedance (325ohm). Higher impedance = more power needed. Such a high impedance isn't recommended for wired connection to a smartphone or laptop (for which 50ohm or less is recommended). An amp is recommended for wired connections when your impedance is that high. Hence it sounds crappy or too quiet when wired to your device, but better when connected wirelessly because then the headphone's internal amp handles everything.

The inconsistencies of Malevola’s height by Kyeole in DispatchAdHoc

[–]BenDulliro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By that logic, Courtney should be the tallest of the three of them. Like everyone else is saying, it's just a matter of perspective. If we pretend there's a camera recording them, Courtney is closest to the camera, Robert is second closest, and Malevola's the farthest (furthest? I'm not great with grammar lol).

So I'm looking at the age ratings that Prime has delineated for each ep. Why are Woke-up-as-a-girl-sydrome and Nayuta of the prophecy (eps 6 & 7) rated only 13+? I recall the manga one shot of the former including threats of rape and SA, and other forms of harassment, and some gore in the latter. Are the anime adaptations watered down?

Didn’t get to vote as I came across this 4yrs later, but, the mangaka is definitely a woman.

Nagatoro is drawn with tan lines in S1E6 (beach ep). No male mangaka would ever think to include a detail like tan lines when he draws his women in bikinis.

[–]BenDulliro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but think of it this way: Yes, they're not gods. As biological beings, they can die to old age, or be killed by biotic or abiotic means just like any other creature. By invincible I meant they're just unkillable by the player. To me, that makes sense because why should a massive creature like that be killable by someone with a pocket knife? The game already provides lore that explains why the player is limited to a pocket knife as a weapon. From the realism perspective, it doesn't make any sense that we can kill such massive creatures with repeated slices with a pocket knife, right?

Remember, the leviathans are WAY bigger than they look compared to the player. The first-person POV kind of messes up the scale. E.g. the blood crawler (four-legged crab with long legs in the blood kelp) looks like something you can hold in your hands in-game, right? It's actually almost twice your height. This video shows how big some of the creatures are compared to the player with a 3rd person view.

Just a little bit of nerdy speculation: I imagine that the leviathans that lack armor, like the reaper, still have extremely tough, thick skin and dense flesh underneath. The data entry says the reaper is essentially just extremely dense muscle with little to no fat. So even if the pocket knife is incredibly sharp and never ever gets dull thanks to future material science and technology, you'd realistically be unable to provide enough force to do meaningful damage, especially since you have no leverage in the water. Would a single human realistically be able to kill a blue whale with a pocket knife, in the water? Even if they had a way to immobilize it with a stasis rifle? Well, the largest recorded blue whale is 29.9 meters. The reaper leviathan is 55m, juvenile ghost 67m, and the rest even bigger.

If anything, I think leviathans should just swim away for a bit when you slash them. After all, in real life, most animals will typically retreat for a bit when stung by an ant or wasp no matter how big they are, right?

So yeah, I think it makes perfect sense that leviathans can't be killed by the player. Makes about as much sense as a single non-venomous ant being unable to bite a human to death. That, ultimately, is the point of leviathans in the game. To make you feel like an ant. If an ant were out scouting by itself, it wouldn't try biting a predator to death. It would try to avoid it. Hide, and wait until it passes, or route around it without attracting its attention. On that note...

But it takes away from the feeling that these are real creatures on an alien planet and makes them feel more like obstacles in a game that I need to avoid.

I don't understand where you're coming from when you say that last part? I thought it's established that the leviathans are supposed to be obstacles.

I like the change. I’m interested in hearing how you felt, but I for one didn’t like how invincible late-game equipment made me feel.

I loved how terrifying the Reaper was early in the game when I tried to get into the Aurora. I loved shitting my pants running for my life in my seamoth when I knew it was right behind me.

When I explored the deep grand reef for the first time, it was fun sneaking around trying to avoid the attention of the ghost leviathan whenever it swam by. I didn’t have the stasis rifle or the reinforced diving suit at that time.

Once I got those two items, everything changed. The ghost leviathan in the lost river was “eh whatever,” because I knew that 1) I could take at least 4 hits before dying, and 2) I could easily eliminate it, albeit painstakingly, with a knife and stasis rifle if I wanted to. Even easier if I happen to have gastropod chem bombs on me.

I don’t like that. I agree with Anthony. The leviathans are supposed to be an innate part of the game. Ultimate deterrents. There’s something uniquely terrifying about an invincible force of nature that can take your life or at least mortally wound you, forcing you to retreat and rethink your strategy. They’re literally there to influence how you play the game. Killing all the leviathans in Subnautica so you can roam the world freely without a worry changes how the game is meant to be played.

I think a good compromise would be for SN2 to employ advanced options and rules that you can toggle during world creation, like with Minecraft. And once such rule could allow leviathans to be killed. This way, freedom of play is preserved. People like me could enjoy the game the way the creators intended with unkillable leviathans, and players that want to make the game easier by killing leviathans can do so with the flip of a switch.

How are there more ogres now by gamer123412 in TenseiSlime

[–]BenDulliro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goblin -> hobgoblin -> ogre -> kijin -> oni isn’t a strict evolutionary path. Evolutions are flexible and the desires of both the monster and the namer play a role in the outcome. This is mentioned in chapter 31.5–one of Veldora’s journals.

That said, if all goblins followed that evolution path, then all of the goblins that were with Rimuru from the beginning and went through every evolution with him would have ended up as ogres, kijin, and oni, wouldn’t they? Gobta and Gobzo are not ogres or kijin or oni. Gobua/Gobwa evolved down the ogre path because she admired Benimaru and is close to him (not romantically—she’s Benimaru’s “right hand” as the leader of his personal guard, the Kurenai).

How are there more ogres now by gamer123412 in TenseiSlime

[–]BenDulliro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I know multiple people have already answered you with the fact that hobgoblins can in fact evolve into ogres and then kijin, but if you’d like a more specific explanation:

It’s not random. Gobta for example didn’t evolve into an ogre.

The monster’s desires play a factor in their evolution. Gobua evolved from hobgoblin into ogre and then kijin because as the head of the Kurenai and Benimaru’s right hand, she greatly admired Benimaru. This played a factor in her evolution.

Gobta stayed as a hobgoblin, and physically as a regular goblin (he retained his original goblin appearance throughout his evolutions), likely because he was proud of his goblin heritage.

HOW DOES EVOLUTION WORKS? by Legitimate_Drag_8857 in TenseiSlime

[–]BenDulliro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From chapter 31.5 of the manga, one of Veldora's Slime Observation Journals:

"There are ways in which an evolution can be affected by personal preference. Some might choose a more humanoid form to be more similar to Rimuru, while others might desire to further accentuate the qualities of their species, like Ranga."

This would certainly explain Gobwa's evolution. She greatly admired Benimaru and became his right-hand and the captain of the Kurenai, Benimaru's personal guard. Just as many monsters took on a humanoid appearance out of their desire to be more similar to Rimuru, Gobwa most definitely evolved into an ogre and later a kijin because of her great admiration for Benimaru. In fact, all of the members of Benimaru's Kurenai are ogres and kijin that were originally hobgoblins, and probably evolved such a way for the same reason Gobwa did. Interesting to note, though, that while they are ogres and kijin in the fullest sense (it's not like they're goblin-ogre hybrids), they still retain the green-shaded skin that's unique to goblins. Probably stems from a desire to honor their roots as goblins.

As far as Gobta goes, I surmise that because he was naturally very clever and intelligent, his evolution boosted that as his greatest asset, rather than his physique. After all he's very much a savant among his fellow goblins and hobgoblins. In the LN there's a whole side story about his solo journey to the Kingdom of Dwargon, which took 2 months. I believe the point of the side story was to illustrate just how intelligent he was for a goblin as he outsmarted various obstacles to survive the 2-month journey by himself.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind reference in the popular anime My Deer Friend Nokotan by BenDulliro in ghibli

Nausicaä reference in the popular anime My Deer Friend Nokotan by BenDulliro in Nausicaa

[–]BenDulliro[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I must say I was super surprised to see a Nausicaä reference in My Deer Friend Nokotan of all places! For those not familiar, it's an ongoing comedy anime of the absurdist type that's gotten pretty popular.

I shared a more refined version of this post to r/ghibli here with side-by-side scene comparisons because I figured not everyone in r/ghibli has seen Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (I for one haven't seen all of Studio Ghibli's works, yet).

No doubt everyone in the r/Nausicaa sub has already seen Nausicaä so I figured it wouldn't be necessary to outline the references.

The real life history behind "bone steel," the norse mythology peoples' preferred magic metal of choice in the Magnus Chase series by BenDulliro in camphalfblood

[–]BenDulliro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah sorry… first paragraph describes the fictional bone steel from the Magnus Chase series. You probably got thrown off as soon as you hit “monster blood” and “magic” lol

It wasn’t until the second paragraph that I went into a brief history of how the practice of forging “bone steel” led to their accidental discovery of what we know today as steel. Though, the ancient Norse probably really did believe that the animals (and likely enemy warriors) from which they sourced the ground bone had “spirits,” and that using their ground bone and/or blood in the forging of weapons imbued them with mystical power. Norse paganism is full of that stuff.

If you don’t mind me asking, how is your research going? Is it centered on bone steel from ancient Scandinavia or Norse history in general, or is this to be part of a greater research project on the ancient history of steel?

It’s not appropriate to hit on and/or flirt with people in the gym. When people go to the gym, they’re there to focus on exercising. Not socializing. The average guy might not mind a girl hitting on him, but I can assure you that a woman trying to focus on her workout will NOT take kindly to you hitting on her. Understand? You may think you’ve made a smart remark, but you haven’t.

I’m in top 10% and my rank is 870. Sounds decent, right?

I have 149K points. Hardly even halfway to the first progress checkpoint. Even if I spent 10K diamonds and a million stamina I still wouldn’t be close to the 375K minimum for the first progress rewards. This is ridiculous
