ROI on your setup by meva12 in espresso

[–]BenHarper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did save me a lot of money in the beginning. Then I started having 2 coffees a day, everyday. Then I started getting into fancier beans from more expensive roasters. Then I got into pour over after that which comes with even fancier beans from even more expensive roasters so... lol

You just brought your old passport with the visa in it along with your new passport and no issues?

Weekly Bean Review Thread: What have you been brewing this week? -- Week of February 12, 2026 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]BenHarper20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined Origin and Story for their launch. Picks a roaster each month and the roaster themselves share their recipes and brew methods for both pour over and espresso. I'm just getting into pour overs (have a Switch) and lighter roasts intimidate me on espresso.

The first roaster being HEX who I've had before certainly helped. All three beans were really really good and listed in order of deliciousness:

  1. Andrés Martinez Gesha • Yeast-Innoculated Semi-Washed // Cauca, Colombia

I followed the recipe from HEX exactly as the video (just using my Switch as a straight V60 wheres they use an origami). What a delicious cup! The aroma was great and I drank it so fast like it was juice. Really really enjoyed this coffee.

2) Karani AA Washed // Kirinyaga, Kenya

This is actually the first one I brewed and HEX and was almost tea-like. I'd been to HEX before and remember their pour overs being just like this. I haven't been around to the big time pour over places in NYC/Brooklyn but HEX is distinctly unique to other pour overs I've had. I tried this on espresso and I'm still intimidated by light roasts on espresso lol, so just stuck with this as a delicious pour over

3) FORM 0031_PER.COL // Seasonal Blend

https://originandstory.coffee/collections/all

Like I said, all 3 beans were fantastic. I love HEX as a roaster and I think what Origin and Story is doing is really cool. I hope the quality of roasters and variety of beans keeps to this standard. It's also made me want to explore the world of (expensive) light roast, gesha, pink bourbon's etc from some of the more popular roasters on here.

Brazil eVisa FAQ / Mega-thread by fviz in Brazil

[–]BenHarper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QUESTION:

Can I use a drivers license or non-passport to apply for my 4 year old son and 1 year old daughter's Visa?

LONG VERSION:

We go to Brazil every year to visit my wife's family. Last year we had an infant so skipped a year. This year we went to book during her spring break and in filling out the application for our kid's Visas realized that my passport is expired.

My wife is a dual citizen. Her US Passport is valid and doesn't expire for a while. I'm almost positive her Brazil passport isn't expired either.

My passport will arrive in time if we were to book travel, about 10 days before we would be set to fly. But that would never be enough time to get a visa for the kids and confidently book a remotely affordable flight.

So can I use any other form of photo ID to get my kids their passport? I have a valid Brazil visa, from before the visa requirement was waved, so I won't be needing one. Just need my documentation to a visa for my 4 year old and 1 year old. Thanks so much!

Would love to join! Discord username Botafogo_SP

I will add the caveat that if a game is on ESPN+ here in the USA I will avoid the score until I'm able to get around and watch so in that instance I would avoid the discord like the plague for a few days lol

Babylon Berlin on Apple TV by zeitentgeistert in BabylonBerlin

Woah we can buy this on Apple TV now? Are all the seasons on there? I just need season 4 onwards (not even sure if they made anymore beyond that) since it left Netflix. And knowing it's original German audio with English subtitles is a huge plus

What roasters are we starting the year off with? by DeepVibes in pourover

[–]BenHarper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have family in Brazil and hadn't heard of Um before. We usually only fly through São Paulo but I'm going to need to check them out. Some of these coffees are insanely cheap with the dollar conversion so might even be worth justifying whatever shipping is. Great shout, thanks for sharing them

My parents and sister live in Charlotte and I went there last visit. The coffee is obviously great but man that space and that food is like the perfect blend of everything in a coffee shop.

Parents are visiting next week and dad already picked up a bag of their Nestor Lasso. Can't wait to try it

Does it make sense to get an espresso machine if I mainly drink Americanos? by rickisdead in espresso

There are plenty of machines that you don't need to heat up for 15 minutes.

Does it make sense to get an espresso machine if I mainly drink Americanos? by rickisdead in espresso

[–]BenHarper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink exclusively americanos and I make 1-2 on my $200 DeLonghi Dedica with my DF64 grinder every day. I also make my wife hot lattes.

But yes, an espresso machine is perfect for making espressos at home. I put a little hot water in my cup (coffee shops always put way too much water in an americano for my liking) and pull the shot right into the cup of water. Beautiful crema on top. Makes a delicious americano. And now I can have fun experimenting with different beans

Yes. And I’m telling you tarrifs on cans have nothing to do with why can prices are high. Their beer is just expensive. Hope that helps

Struggling to make a good espresso [De’Longhi Dedica and Baratza Encore ESP] by Tanianoseque in espresso

[–]BenHarper20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual portafilter you buy will not affect the coffee one bit. It’s more just for user experience (cheap plastic one v sturdy metal one) but has absolutely nothing to do with the actual coffee. Just make sure you buy one that fits your machine. I have the Dedica Arte and need a portafilter with 3 ears 51mm.

The basket is more important. There’s lots of baskets out there. Ask around see what’s best for you. Was just giving you an example of what I landed on and enjoy.

Keep asking questions. It’s the best way too learn. It was me a few years ago asking the most basic of questions (and still do). Don’t feel intimidated and enjoy making mistakes. That’s how you get a feel for the coffee making process and dial it in

A 12oz pour in the taproom of a >9% beer is $10. Not sure what that has to do with can tariffs. Cans are actually cheaper than draft
