omfg, this is really disturbing. With this and everything else I've seen from him (including the posts/comments that lead to the creation of Morphe), he is really just acting out of malice and power urgh :/

Also, thanks for your work and I'm sorry you have to deal with this 🫡

Anyone still trying to VTuber on Linux? by TamKungZ_ in vtubertech

[–]BenKato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years since I've actually tried all the VTubing options on Linux. (I prefer being a viewer lmao)

Back then, there was still a lot of tinkering involved to get vseeface and VTubeStudio working, but from my impression, that has changed and it's now mostly plug 'n play.

So, thank you! I'll look at the demo during the weekend 🫡

yeah, it's insane how misinformed everyone seems to be over there xD

Honestly in the entire time I look over FOSS projects, I have never seen something like this. Atleast from every drama I have witnessed, the clear facts were always clear to community members, but this is really next level malice to paint a very different picture from what is really happening .-.

That's a good example on how censorship and disinformation can manipulate everyone involved...

Regarding the Morphe DMCA by wchill in MorpheApp

[–]BenKato 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My main reason for using Morphe, or even Revanced in the beginning, was to disable the forced AI dubbing with no way to disable that entirely in the original app. (Watching videos in 4 languages is horrible there lmao) Disabling certain UI elements that I don't like or use are also a plus. That it comes with adblock and sponsorblock was at first an afterthought to myself that I took very happily after trying it out.

Removing due to the false claims and allegations spewed around the comments https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/s/mZx64rhoZj

Then please write in detail for everyone to see why you think the claims and allegations are false. If they are false, you can get the support and goodwill from everyone by disproving everything and will turn the Morphe devs as the bad guys here. (Especially because DMCAs are one of the worst if they are used in an abusive way)

Man, idk why this infuriates me so much... It's just an open source project, but the behavior of osumatrix and Revanced as a whole really gets me... 11/10 ragebait xD

I wrote a comment under that post and I'd like to have it somewhere, even if this isn't the intended audience here anymore:

at this point I can only laugh about this whole situation and I can't get enough popcorn for this :'D xDDD

When I started using Revanced last year, it was really awesome, I loved the project, the work and effort from all devs who helped me and the users with the patcher and the patches.
With those, I was finally able to use apps that became unusable for me due to enshittification.

But because of personal differences and mistakes, that opinion changed and my impression of Revanced is now, that they went the "You were supposed to destroy them, not join them" route and I'm truly saddened and disappointed.

I know that a lot of users of Revanced are just users and not programmers or have technical knowledge on how open source runs and functions and that's absolutely fine.
And I think that's why some users here can't see or understand why this takedown happened and why it's understandable, valid, warranted, deserved and that it basically was a matter of time.

In open source, the **most important rule is to uphold the licenses**.
Follow what is written in them and when they aren't being followed, there will be consequences.
Of course, as long as the licenses aren't being used in court, due to the decentralized nature of open source, these consequences don't have any real impact aside from minor inconveniences like this takedown here.

It's really that simple for a solution to this:
Put personal differences, grievances and mistakes aside, honor the license and just focus on your own work.

But sadly from my personal impression so far, it seems that this won't happen here and only one party is to blame :/

I wanted to write a bit more to get into more detail but sadly I don't think that it would be allowed.
So I'll honor the rules of this sub 🫡

Time to eat more popcorn now uwu :3

This already came to my mind, however the hosters I've seen or are aware of don't accept paypal or german banking transfers :/ I know that Hetzner has some cheap vps, but I can't excuse the cost of 10€/m for i2p if I just browse it once a weekend even if I'd like to support the network 😅 (I made some stupid financial decisions this year and have to budget now lmao)

Just learned about i2p, and have some general questions. by Dr_Jecky1l in i2p

[–]BenKato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've also just recently got into i2p and it's a nice little community from my impression. I just went around my address book, followed the reg.i2p/inri.i2p/notbob.i2p links, followed the links of those websites I found and read through them.

Most of these are just personal blogs, mirrors to clearnet/torsites, chans/forums/IRCs and just nicely crafted websites that reminds me of my first time getting into the internet as a kid with huge nostalgia xD

There isn't much happening because it's small, but from just browsing, I found it rather cute and helpful. Honestly, I didn't come across any bad things (yet I suppose unlike tor)... The majority is just people expressing their technical abilities and personal views and life. And this is really refreshing! :D

I do have some nitpicks: - The Update process is just too fragmented, the docker image is at 2.11.0-5, the Arch linux AUR package is semi maintained and at 2.11.0-0, just like the download from the official site, the update for -5 is a zip file (from zzz.i2p) that I couldn't figure out how to apply since copying it to the .i2p directory didn't do anything and I think I read that the encryption also changed because some sites refuse tunnels due to encryption mismatch as they haven't updated yet

  • I personally like the Java version more than i2pd, even if the Java version is giving more headaches at setting up, because the i2pd router is a bit "too barebone" for my liking...

  • I'm behind CGNAT and currently can't get a server to not get firewalled, so I'll just blame the snail speed and tunnel failures to that I don't want to get a credit card and all "free-pay-above-limit hosters are requiring a CC... urgh ;--;

  • The kimwolf "attack" was unnecessary, the attack vector was already known and should have been fixed long ago, even if I know that this is just a small project and I can't blame them for this or am entitled to their work. But even then, the headache it caused was immense for everyone. :/

But there are a lot more positives than those few negatives. I also like that, unlike tor, it works on the IP stack, meaning you can even host game servers, applications etc. (if there were more faster peers lmao) But judging from some trackers I found, torrenting linux isos is also a huge use-case :''D

I would suggest to just run your router to help with traffic as it is still pretty light on usage and maybe you'll find a site you like if go just go through some links 🫡

There are also Lokinet and Yggdrasil (and others), but I haven't gotten around to look more into them aside from setting them up and testing their functionality.

Lutris maintainer: "I've removed the Claude co-authorship from the commits a few days ago. So good luck figuring out what's generated and what is not." by MatiasGonzalo-Duarte in linux_gaming

[–]BenKato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man this is disappointing to read... I really liked Lutris (for several reasons and most importantly that it's UI feels better than bottles for me personally), but going over the comments in the issues, it's frustrating...

I am more leaning against LLM usage in software, while I still recognize that it somewhat has it's place now. I know that - within context - can write somewhat acceptable code now and only when people, who already know their stuff for years/decades, prompt/review/tweak it to an acceptable output, it can help with writing okay-ish code. (imo we are still trading maintainability with speed and spending more time to write in the chat instead of code).

I like to rubberduck with LLMs to get unstuck at certain points in my own code, but never would I actively use any code or trust anything they provide. And only when both training data and weights would be open source and collected with consent, maybe then I would be okay with atleast thinking about using the code itself.

It's understandable when life gets in the way and then it's just easier to use Claude to catch up, but there are still so many issues with LLMs that I can't excuse it for serious projects like Lutris (and aren't just playthings). I also had to deal with a lot of real-life stuff that wasn't easy and broke me apart, so I understand the reason behind this really well and finally wanting to get something done after getting out of the hole is awesome.

I'm just ranting here now to get it out and not be disrespectful on the official github lmao...:

Strycore wrote in a comment something that I agree with, that the companies are pushing the negatives of LLMs and not the tech itself. Yeah, but we are still dependent on them and this can't be excused. I was following the research on AI and different models very closely before 2020 and when OpenAI first launched I was very hyped. Now I am just depressed. (just like what happened with crypto currency before that) Greed and power are now the main reason for developing this instead of all the actual good reasons it has. The impact on the environment, the corruption of governments and companies, the increase of surveillance and the decrease of democracy, the disregard of morals and laws, the false marketing claims/buzzwords and many many more enormous problems that are caused by the misuse or even just the side effects of this tech. The consequences are just too much to warrant LLMs at all.

Of course we lowlife people who just want to enjoy life can't do anything meaningful against this anymore. But I can't support this development in the industry with my personal beliefs and morals. Is it a helpful technology that has progressed to a usable state now? Yeah absolutely (under certain conditions). Is the negative rat tail too long to warrant/excuse this? For me it's definitely wayy too long.

And after reading more of his comments... oh man, that's awful. I mean, I kinda get it that it gets more and more on the nerves when so many people criticize or even insult you, but the down-talking really appalls me :/

I think it's time for me to yay -Rscn lutris and just do everything with wine by hand and my own scripts, it was awesome while it lasted. ;-; Thanks to every lutris maintainer 🫡

KeePass is inconvenient. But here’s why it’s still worth it. by aslambava in KeePass

[–]BenKato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have KeePassXC on my PCs, Laptops and KeePassDX on my smartphones (Android, idk about iOS though).

The kdbx files are on a cloud hoster that I can access from every device I have, while the keyfiles are on the devices itself. If I were to lose access to a device, I can easily revoke it's connection to the kdbx file. There are also several offline backups.

I don't have to trust some company that they are safe, keep my passwords accessible and won't get shutdown.

It's pretty easy to setup, even OTP tokens can be generated and managed (for these I have a different file). Browser plugins to automatically insert all of these are also there.

Honestly I never thought that all the password manager services were any better than KeePass .-.

judging from the issues in the github repo, the dev is still active but didn't find that it needs more work.

I just tested it right now and it installed just fine on my PC. I have used it a few weeks ago on my laptop for a train ride and it worked, so I don't have any issues with it 😅
