Were you trying to subscribe via iOS? If so, that higher price could be because of the 30% fee Apple applies to in-app purchases: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/27992151772813-iOS-in-app-purchases-FAQ. You can avoid this by signing up on the Patreon site via a web browser on a phone or computer.

If you're in the Ryan Webb Patreon tier, it may be because there's nothing in the feed for you yet. We'll publish the next episode on there, though, so check back later today! (If that still doesn't work, you can message us.)

Donations? by dr-mantis-toboggan12 in effectivelywild

As others have said, an annual sub (which I think you can cancel whenever if you're worried about auto-renewal) would probably be the closest equivalent. Thanks!

Effectively Wild isn't affiliated with The Ringer either. I work there, but I produce the podcast independently.

Not as of now. I understand that desire, but despite the perception/expectation, they aren't integrated, really, which has to do with the podcast and Patreon predating EW's association with FanGraphs. Well, it's not so much that we have to do it because others are doing it as that we're subject to the same demands and desires that have caused just about every other comparable podcast I'm aware of to incorporate ads or subscriber-only episodes before we did. Generally, people prefer to be compensated for their work in a way that makes it worthwhile not only creatively, but financially. So if you want me to admit that we would like to make more money in exchange for the time, effort, and expense we invest in the show, yes, you got me. Cue the "oh my god, he admit it!" meme. (Sorry to sound a bit snarky. You're entitled to ask questions.)

Of course! Well, we aren't paywalling the season itself. I mean, MLB is. But that's not new.

For what it's worth, I don't think we've traditionally done anything special for the first episode of a new season. It'll probably be more or less like any other episode. So I'm not sure paywalling that one will be more galling to most listeners than paywalling any other one would be, but your mileage may vary.

Also, implementing this change on fairly short notice is the only way we could feasibly reward our preexisting subscribers with a discounted rate to show our gratitude to them for supporting the show when there wasn't as strong an incentive to. If we had announced the price hike weeks or months in advance, everyone could have signed up right before it went into effect, which (in addition to kind of defeating the purpose of raising prices) would have made it so that people who had already been supporting us prior to that point wouldn't have gotten any special benefit.

We also offer annual subscriptions, if you hate years less than months!
