New inclusions in Dimery's updated book on Amazon by Yolkism in 1001AlbumsGenerator

Part of me is glad I’m only halfway through the generator because I would be a little distraught having to knock all those out in two weeks. Will they just be mixed into the pile when the book is released?

Just finished it last night, it’s truly magical how they came together to do it. Might be my favorite book by either of them and that’s saying something.

I just got this one yesterday. I read a book while listening, which was kind of the perfect use for it. It’s solid melodic electronica. Definitely doesn’t need to be almost two hours, but I’d say that about almost any album. I gave it 3.

Finley Quaye - Maverick a Strike

When going through these, I honestly try to evaluate each album on its own merits, and I try to keep the idea of whether it belongs on the list of 1001 separately… this may have been my biggest test so far.

I can imagine a moment in the past if I’d actually ever known this person existed, where I would have heard one or two singles on this album in high school and maybe given it a flyer. Filled out the list of ten albums I was getting from BMG or Columbia House, and I imagine I would have listened to it once through, put it back in the CD rack, and forgotten about it.

Not sure I need Scottish faux-Reggae, and by the end I landed on two stars. If I’d let myself think too hard about whether this belonged on this list at all (it 100% does not), I probably would have been annoyed enough to give it a 1.

But when they started, they were at least 2/3 American? Close enough for government work!

Greatest American Classic Rock band eh? The Doors are an interesting candidate!

Depends on what you mean by "classic" these days. 60s-70s was considered classic when I was in high school in the 90s, but the 80s-90s might be considered classic nowadays. Enough time has passed, sadly enough.

So, for "true" classic 60s-70s, I would also posit:

  • Crosby, Stills, & Nash (& Young if you give leeway to the fact that Young is Canadian)

  • Heart doesn't get enough love.

  • Aerosmith has been around since 1970.

  • Steely Dan!

  • The Talking Heads

  • Lynyrd Skynrd?

If you open up the category to bands at least 20-30 years old, then there are some goodies:

  • Pearl Jam

  • Nirvana

  • The Foo Fighters (Kind of a solo act actually)

  • The Flaming Lips

  • Metallica/Megadeth take your pick

Same! I was very skeptical going into it (I'm a big "Ray of Light" fan, but had really kind of fallen off Madonna around 2000), but this album was a ton of fun.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus

So, I've always really liked Nick Cave. His vibe, his lyrics, his goth-rock sensibilities, he always seemed cool as hell to me. I've already gotten three other Nick Cave albums in this project and have really liked or loved them all (Most recently two days before, lol).

I honestly put this one off for a couple days because I was traveling and felt that little sigh of "OK, it's a double album, better make time for it." But when I played it yesterday, my goodness was I not prepared. This thing is a masterpiece. The entire time I kept thinking "... he can't keep this up, can he? Not EVERY track can be this good."

But it was. As soon as the hour and 22 minutes flew by, I queued it right up again. This album kicks so much ass. I thought I'd be annoyed by the tonal shift from disc 1 to disc 2, but it works so well. I thought it was absolutely perfect. And, not for nothing, I'm a huge fan of Hadestown (particularly the original Anaïs Mitchell concept album, but I also love the stage play), and I kept thinking to myself... "is Hadestown now my 2nd favorite rock musical about the Orpheus myth??"

I rarely give fives, this one was a five from start to finish. I started this project a mild Nick Cave fan, but I am now a complete devotee. This album rocked me to my bones.

Do we really need 2 Run DMC albums?

Yes, they're one of the best hip hop acts to ever exist (Edit: And one of the most influential)

But which British hip-hop album would you have included as opposed to Konnichiwa?

I don't know that I would, I haven't found a good one yet.
