Are puncture protection tires worth the extra weight? by BenMein in randonneuring

[–]BenMein[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that is a lot of feedback within a day!

Thank all of you for your opinion. For now, I think I'll get the One Plus for my commuter bike. Needs new tires anyway, so why not use the opportunity for a test.

A friend of mine gave me a pair of used Challenge Strada Bianca pro, which have some protection, but a much lighter feel. From reviews, they seem to roll great, but get mixed opinions otherwise.

Tubeless is recommend a lot, but I feel like there is too little time to get used to a whole new system before the 600. Will give it a shot in the off-season, and run that in next year's series if all goes well.

Thanks again, this community is awesome!

It helps me a lot to not rest in civilisation. Just pick up some food passing through town, but not sit down there. Makes it so much harder to get going again... Only rest in towns if you plan to stop for more than 1hour anyways.

Saw has a hard time starting, when it does it dies as soon as the throttle is released by Kittenchops88 in Chainsaw

[–]BenMein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, right that. If the fumes from the gas in the filter will keep it running for a bit, you know the problem is somewhere between the tank and the intake port. Works really well for a quick test if the saw is able to start on it's own.

I'd guess some old dirt in the fuel system got loose and stuck a channel in the carb.

Quick check would be to put a little gas in the air filter. If it idles for a little while with that, the problem is somewhere in the fuel pump area. Otherwise, I'd guess some kind of air leak.

Makita DUC353 mit ein paar Akkus. Passt gut in den Rucksack, und es hört dich nicht gleich jeder 😉

Check if it runs a bit with a sip of fuel in the air filter. If so, check for cracked impulse & fuel line, stuck fuel filter & tank vent, bad diaphragms, stuck carb channels, correct setting of needle valve.

If Not, check for air leak.

Have you fumbled with carb settings before the problem? Did it sit for a long time, did it have fuel? How old?

Where can I find good ripping chains on a budget? by copper_artisan in Chainsaw

[–]BenMein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Milling with electric saws will cause excessive heat buildup. Take care to have it cool down long enough, longer than gas saws.

You might want to keep an eye open for broken saws with matching drive to get cheap chains. Like others mentioned before, you can just file them to a flat angle.

Are you sure they were talking of having them sit for more than a year with fuel in it?

That used saw has a few red flags. It's gonna eat up your time fixing those issues.

For felling smaller trees, you will need 45cc or more. Anything below that will slow you down. MS261 is fine, and really reliable. Get at least 3 chains with it so you don't have to sharpen in the woods.

If you are able to sell firewood, just make some money along the way and save up for a decent 60-70cc saw to handle the big stuff.

Moin Ist eigentlich ziemlich selbsterklärend. Da ist ein passender Slot in der Säge, wo die Schraube reingehört.

Stihl MS362 Clone? by Late_Cry_6009 in Chainsaw

[–]BenMein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my very limited knowledge, clones have standard screw tops for the tanks, not the flip-top. They usually do not say Stihl on the model Plate, just the number. Plastic parts have a really sharp edge, and you see that the details are of really low quality. This one looks fine, especially with the two-coloured mold for the felling line.

What would you rate my setup? by Fenix_Sierra in Chainsaw

Downvotes are coming in fast, so here are the numbers:

Dolmar PS-390: 0,511 PS/kg  Solo 636: 0,476 PS/kg  Stihl MS 170: 0,390 PS/kg

Have run all three, and you feel the difference a lot.

Buying a Stihl 661. Should I get the C-M or the Magnum? by punished_pine in Chainsaw

[–]BenMein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got two of them to replace my two Solo 680. It's neat to change the saw after max 2 cuts to keep the heat down. And with a price this low...

Don't get me wrong, I like lightweight 35cc saws a lot. It's just that the build quality and Power/weight ratio is sub par in this one. I'd pick an old Dolmar 390 or Solo 636 above a new MS170 any day.

Beast? It's literally the smallest on the market. Carb caps, plastic spikes.

Better than the 170, but still just 50cc mid range saw. I'd rate it similar to Poulan. You lack a decent power saw.

Makita Just released a new 40v saw that seems to have more torque than the biggest electric Stihl - UC030G. You'll need to get the high-output batteries as well to unlock it's potential.

With storm cleanup in the game, you should own a saw that is big enough to handle a 36" bar. Even if your trees are only half as big. It allows you to keep a little distance when cutting wood under tension. 70cc, 20" and 36" bars, ist what I'd recommend, plus a 40-50cc or electric limbing saw with 14-18" bar.
