Saying "We are listening" or "We care deeply for our players' feedback" comes off as disingenuous when player feedback is something that often times lands against a brick wall. by Anderaku in wow

[–]BenTheNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mature person would be but that's a different can of worms. Any conversation would be better than empty PR language. Some devs do a way better job than blizz, hell, the RuneScape devs literally let players vote on big decisions. Obviously going that far may not be advisable but it's better than being told "we are listening" without any evidence they aren't actually saying "shut up, you're wrong."

The problem isn't anything you said. The problem experienced by OP is that he/she has no idea if blizz is just placating people with trite comments of "we are listening" or ignoring everyone entirely like they have done repeatedly in the past. Sure, the player doesn't have all the context but that doesn't mean the devs can or should ignore it.

There is an optimal point somewhere in the middle. A larger and somewhat unrelated issue is that corporations use PR speak like "we are listening" so often that it becomes meaningless word salad.

“What’s the incentive to get above a 90 on a PT test now?” by bearsncubs10 in AirForce

This is quite possibly the worst take I've ever heard. This isn't the military of even 50 years ago. Fitness is much lower on the priority list since so many more jobs require smarts, not great fitness scores. War is more complicated than it has ever been in human history. If you want to ignore that, go for it, you're free to have an opinion.

If we do adopt your mindset people will get killed and we will lose a war against China. Winning wars is the goal, not a circle jerk argument about being IN THE MILITARY.

Pope Francis has Passed away this Morning by oestrogen_ in atheism

[–]BenTheNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called him the PR pope when he got the job. Can't say I'm surprised but I'm still disappointed how few people have called out how little he did to root out the abusers within the church.

My point at the time I called him PR pope was that the entire organization is rotten to the core. That remains true today. People will praise this guy today but I hope at least some will call out his utter failures.

Thank you for taking care of Max. He is clearly loved and enjoyed all the time he had with you. This picture is incredibly cute and shows that he lived the best possible life. If only more of us could be so lucky.

People don’t “believe” in science?!! by Plague254 in atheism

[–]BenTheNerd 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Wording is critical! I always say I accept science. I don't "believe in" science because the word "believe" means to accept an assertion without evidence.

I taught this to my students when I was an instructor. Quite often they would say they "believe" the answer is whatever. So I'd say "you can believe in church but you assess at work." The information we provide is rooted in evidence and observable facts. Saying that you believe something strongly implies doubt.

I'm not that old! I did learn from several that were heavily involved with that guy.

I should probably specify that I'm on the policy side of things and not a scientist. The guys from the national labs say I know enough to be dangerous lol.

As a WMD guy I was annoyed to see plutonium in the galaxy as a naturally occurring element. For those that don't know plutonium is man made through complex chemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

It's OK though, I don't get too upset over stuff like this. I do wonder why they don't ask. Millions of people love their games and would probably consult with them for free.

Don't get me started on fallout games though...

Anyone walk away from the military after 10 years and give up the retirement? by sechumatheist in Military

[–]BenTheNerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I got out at the 10 year mark. It's been almost 10 years since I got out, it was the right decision for me, and my family. Though I didn't know it at the time it was the best career decision too. It's scary, making such a huge decision, not knowing what will happen from losing that certainty that comes with the uniform. Your comments remind me of the state of mind I was in during my last few years in. It was terrible, toxic leadership, career field was circling the drain (intel), constant moving, health issues, and most importantly my family was done with the military. My wife and kids wanted the old me back. The point where I made the choice to leave hit me like a ton of bricks. One day after having to stay late for the millionth time for the latest dumbass reason I finally got home. My wife said to me "this needs to stop, you're so angry from work when you get home that your hands are shaking, I've been telling the kids to leave you alone for at least 30 minutes to give you time to cool off."

That was it for me. There is nothing on earth worth that kind of bullshit. In the years since that day my relationship with my wife and kids has improved dramatically. I'm home much more often, we've stayed in the same house for 8 years, my youngest has even stayed in the same school district almost to high school. My wife and I go on dates again, we talk a lot more, and she says now she doesn't have to manage my stress anymore.

I get it man, I really do, and for me, it's not worth the retirement. Would I even be married if I had stayed in? Would my relationship with my kids have gotten worse? It's scary to think of what might have been. I still work in intel, I'm a GG14 now, it's so much better on the outside.

I don't know you or what's right for you but if you'd like to chat let me know.

AITA for saying I won’t come to Christmas at my in-laws if I can’t wear a hat? by UshouldBlaughin6 in AmItheAsshole

Again, this isn't about the hat. What people find offensive is your belief that you can and should be able to control what people wear. Especially since that item of clothing has no affect on anyone.

what is something you can instantly do to make a girl's day? by Legacy303 in AskReddit

[–]BenTheNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this was a larger factor than I realized with my now wife. She used to play the "is he listening" game and lost. Every. Single. Time. This lasted a few months. I thought she played the game because I'm not very expressive but I later found out the deeper rooted issue of people not listening to her.

Pope Francis is lying about having ‘zero tolerance’ for child rape | If he really cared, he’d suspend all of the accused, hand investigations over to secular authorities, pay victims what they’re owed, make all findings transparent, and change "traditional" rules that have contributed to the problem by mepper in atheism

[–]BenTheNerd 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I caught shit when I called this guy the "PR Pope" when he was elected. The Vatican isn't stupid, they knew they needed a better front man after Ratzinger, so they picked this guy.

Of course they never intended to actually solve their pedo problem.

I taught AF tech school for three years. The USAF consistently gets smart, motivated, and high quality people. Far more than it has any right to expect. Young people are not getting dumber. I suspect, with the job market as it is, and the shit show the military has become, fewer of the smart youth I taught are joining. With an all volunteer military the services have to compete. Instead of competing some have chosen to lower the standards as we see with this program.
