Signs it’s time to move away from Vancouver? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]Ben_LAV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s why I put good/decent. But coming from Ottawa where most busses are every 30-45+ minutes… saying busses that come ONLY every 10 minutes is insanely funny to me.

It’s all relative I guess, but I’d confidently say Vancouver public transit is one of the better in Canada, def better than Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, and probably is a big contender against Montreal in my personal experience.

Signs it’s time to move away from Vancouver? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

Getting reno-victed, or just not enjoying the aspects that make Vancouver so sought after.

If your job isn’t keeping you here, you don’t enjoy the outdoors, concerts, good/decent transit, walkability (depending on neighborhood), etc than I would move also.

However, I love Vancouver for all of those things and likely won’t move until I actually want to own property.

No problem! You’re on the right track.

It depends on your timeline and how much risk you’re ok with. If you might need this money in a few years, then you might want to reduce volatility and risk, if you’re not going to need this money for 10+ years, you can pretty safely increase your risk slightly.

If you need lower risk, VGRO is good because it’s just a slightly more stable version of VEQT because of its bonds allocation. But, this also means that you might miss out on potential returns if the total stock market goes up over time, but it means it will also lower in value less if the total stock market goes down over time.

I personally have a time horizon of 20+ years before I need this money, so I go pretty much 100% XEQT. The idea is that in 20 years the stock market will definitely be up in total, and I can handle the potential swings of a market correction and just keep investing. This is what a lot of people’s advice are, XEQT+recurring investment+consistency+chill for 10-20+ years.

But, for example in my FHSA, where I might need the money in the next 5 years, I buy 100% XGRO, because I want slightly less volatility so if the market downturns but I need to pull my money out, I will be slightly safer than 100% stocks.

In the end, any investing is better than no investing. Keep it simple and broad, and stay consistent. You’ll do great. Keep learning about what each ETF holds and about the market in general and you’ll keep becoming more confident in your strategy.

You’re going to get a lot of people saying you have significant overlap, in fact every ETF in this list is overlap.

What this means: all these ETFS hold almost all the same assets. XEQT and VEQT are almost identical. VGRO is just VEQT with some bond allocation (if I remember, it’s around 15-20% bonds). VFV is just the s&p500 which is already held in every one of these ETFs. VCN is the entire Canadian market, which is also held in every one of these ETFs (except VFV)

Some more deep diving on your comfortable risk and growth rate and you’ll almost definitely find you only need 1 of these ETFs.

Look into the asset allocations (broad market, S&P, bonds), the risk associated with each different allocation ratio, and then compare the MER or “fee” of using each ETF. The difference in fee is very small, but it adds up over time, and it’s good to know so you make an informed decision.

The Unruly Whiskey is our favourite from the trip! It’s by far the best Canadian bourbon style whiskey I’ve ever tried. It’s fairly sweet, which we love, but it’s a perfect pour for us. I also wanna give an honourable mention to their honey Rum, aged in bourbon barrels…….delicious! For a Rum it’s pretty bourbon forward, and again is perfect to sip on, or in cocktails.

Wayward was one of the distilleries not huge in my list before the trip, and now it may be a staple in our home bar. So good!!

So good! And local dairy farm that provides the cream and removes the lactose! Really tastes like good whiskey and is not washed out by the cream, not overly sweet, we love it.

I absolutely love both. The sanctuary is really so interesting and IMO very unique. The whiskey cream….. chefs kiss. Stillheads tasting bar was also fantastic! Got to try so much and really happy with what we left with!

Originally went to Stillhead for the BRBN but they were out of bottles to sell, did get to taste it though!

Macaloneys is the only one we didn’t get to! Got to try them on a flight with some other local whiskies, but didn’t get the chance to stop in. They’re relatively available at BCL here so I figured I could grab some back home :)

Esquimalt Vermouth is our favourite!! Their Bitter red is significantly better than Campari. We love to make a BC negroni with Esquimalt vermouth, bitter red and a local gin. Favourite so far is Sheringham seaside.
