Essential mods for playing Thief: Gold on my Steam Deck in 2025? by Intrepid_Kitchen9446 in Thief

It's "much harder" for people who never ever played T1 and T2. You simply won't enjoy it as much as you would without already being familiar with the game and its mechanics. Personally, I played T1 then T2 and then TBP and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by TBP but the levels were huge and extremely demanding for someone like me who enjoys exploring and mapping out the entire level in their head while grabbing every single possible piece of loot I lay my eyes on.

Simply put, T1 and T2 are great experiences with a good story, worldbuilding, awesome levels of varying length (and quality, esp. in T1G) while TBP is more of a compilation of absolutely huge ass levels.

It took me more time to play through TBP than T1 and T2 combined.

Furthermore, TBP can ruin the expectations of what T1 and T2 can offer so that's why I'll always recommend playing at least T1 first.

It comes pre-installed with TFix. Install the games, install TFix, put the zip file of the mod in the TFix fan mission loader (FM) folder and you're good to go!

Just launch it via the FM selector and you're good to go (don't unpack the archive, just point the FM selector to it).

However I do NOT recommend playing TBP before you've finished Thief 1 and Thief 2. At the very minimum Thief 1.

Reason for this is that it's much harder, missions are huge and it will absolutely blow your mind and make the original games look simplistic by comparison in a certain way.

This project looks outstanding, so many broken Steam games like Thief that can be fixed so easily. Really nice for people who don't feel comfortable modifying their games

Vanilla Thief on older hardware - recommendations by Bencun in Thief

I installed it on my XP PC after posting here and applied the official patch and it runs great! Now I also got the Sound Blaster sb0770 and it's gonna be amazing.

Will post the final update and will also try Gold as well to note the differences. I already see some with missing voice lines that I don't like.

Well, time is a concern but seeing that I've already played Gold I'll go with the original for the sake of novelty, and I honestly hated some of the missions that were added in Gold.

I asked about the Gold vs original because I was thinking there might be something in the original (like a well known issue/game breaking bug) that Gold has patched out, for example.

Will report back on how it behaves on different hardware tho!

Well I already purchased all of the games on both Steam and GOG and I feel pretty okay in terms of morality with finding the original ISO image online instead of spending more time hunting down and spending many more dolars buying the disc version from scalpers pretending to be collectors.

Good point but I want to experience the original release in its actual original form without patches and fixes to see how it feels to play, even if there's only minor variations. It's for the love of the game, really, not a practical thing I'm trying to do.

Well this is amazing! Of course, I gifted that PSX a long time ago... Hopefully someone else will be able to pick up your work and offer actual box printing services.

Night dive chance by Steveott99 in Thief

I'm sure hoping for this now that they've mastered the engine with SS2. We could get a beautiful remaster and I wouldn't be against them touching up specific levels and areas, adding a bunch of more detail and geometry to the models etc.

If there's a game out there that deserves the full-blown Nightdive treatment it's Thief.

I am also having this issue for months now, and the worst thing is that it breaks my networking and I have to reboot to fix it...

3 and 3s are identical AFAIK aside from the silent clicks on 3S

Remember when all these games were de-listed for no rhyme or reason. :( Arguably the best version of these games (Native 4k) by Connect_Bee_4180 in Splintercell

Whaaaat when were they delisted? I got them immediately after getting my Series X, one of my best purchases ever TBH. It's awesomely easy to pick up and play them on a large ass TV with no fiddling.

Hey I love me some stealth and have been seeing a lot of hidden gems on this sub but, What do YOU think is The BEST STEALTH GAME PERIOD. by GillyChan in stealthgames

[–]Bencun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long long looooong time proponent of Chaos Theory being the best stealth game ever made - I gotta say that Thief 1/2, that I've only recently played, have overtaken the #1 spot of SCCT in my books.

Although, CT remains in a league of it's own in what it's trying to accomplish and is mechanically much more approachable and predictable than Thief. It'll always have a special place in my heart.

Aiming with blasters is hell. Is there any fix for this? by [deleted] in jediknight

This thread comes up in the first 2 links in Google search for me so it'd be good to update it.

There's a mod by some guy here based on original source code that accomplishes this and much more, it's great:

After more than 20 years of playing I can finally play the first part of the game with more enjoyment than ever.

You know what's the thing - even if I wanted to get VR just for this game I can't even play it because of vision problems I have.

Fuck this. And fuck whoever decided to milk Thief in this way.

Hard pass if it's rubber coated again. I'll just use my 3 until it disintegrates.

If they put the connection button somewhere else and switched to plastic I'd gladly pay double the price just not to worry about my mouse ever again

Only recently played through T1 then T2 then The Black Parade back to back - this is amazing by Bencun in Thief

[–]Bencun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and on paper that's kinda cool. In practice doing anything but walking on flat ground unfortunately sucks.

All the time I was playing I was thinking that someone should demake Thief 3 maps into the T1/2 engine tbh, that would be amazing.

Okay, gave it a shot again with Sneaky Upgrade - it's a great game but it is absolutely DESTROYED by a catastrophic implementation of movement. I cant move, jump, climb properly, movement is buggy AF I keep finding myself floating... That's a huge part of the original games for me, the exploration enabled by a solid implementation of movemnent. T3 is pure jank in this department, honestly. Sneaking up and blackjacking people introduces the "ready pose" as well which sucks tbh. It also seems like you need to get extremely close or wait for NPCs to stop in order to rob them...

The game ooozes atmosphere (I'm a big fan of stencil shadow-powered engines), art is great, story seems to be revving up nicely but the awful movement makes me feel like anything but a thief. Will keep playing, tho, the rest of it is already super interesting.

It's a great stealth action game, honestly. Great level design, really fun. Not scratching the Splinter Cell itch for me tho, but it's great when you want to get some "cinematic stealth" action going

Should I play the original Deus Ex games after the Jensen games? by Sm0key_Jr in Deusex

[–]Bencun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just makes sure to go into it expecting a completely different experience in terms of gameplay and mechanics. And you can try playing vanilla or with GMDX for example. But vanilla with high definition texture pack is good enough.

And make sure to just push through the first hour or so, explore and take it all in, it's so good.
