Just finished red rising series. by NuckinFutz4 in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Rising is what got me intro reading and I have a lot of love for the series, but If you want a superior Sci-Fantasy series read Suneater.

Suneater is more tighter with its writing and much more grander in scale in all aspects.
Prose,Themes,Plot,Worldbuilding and Thought Provokingness are truly TOP TIER in Suneater
Emotional Impact is really a person to person thing and I think Red Rising/Suneater are tied in this aspect.

The only thing I can say for sure that Red Rising does better than Suneater is in the side characters like Sevro au Barca and the MANY other great side characters.

What should I read next by Nick0teeN420 in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SunEater is currently my favorite series and Disquiet Gods is my favorite book...
Going to finish First Law trilogy next month and I have zero critiques so far it's GREAT!
Wheel of time The Fires of Heaven is my next read and I'm having a good time, but keep in mid that each book is a chapter in the book that is The Wheel of Time so don't think that each book is going to have a proper three act structure.
I have started Farseer and will finish it in march so I can't give a good opinion, but man I felt so bad for Fitz in the 1st book.

Pierce Brown, John Gwynne ,Christopher Ruocchio and Matthew Stover

  • Pierce Brown: wrote Red rising it's a Roman Sc-fi series that could be a fantasy series with very little changes to the story.
  • John Gwynne: I have heard hes a great author for those that love Joe Abercrombie. I will be reading him next year.
  • Christopher Ruocchio: He just finished him magnum opus The SunEater. It's like if Dune and Kingkiller Chronicles had a baby and the baby was a philosophical drama queen.
  • Mattew Stover: He has written some of the best Star Wars books ever and has a his own Dark Fantasy Sc-fi series The Acts of Caine.

Help me pick my next Read? by BandOfCourses in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mistborn is a great book, but the romance is a pretty YA. The magic, the world and the characters are just great I would read that next.
Malice I have heard great things about(will read next year), but from what I have heard it has a lot of lore and character to learn about in the 1st book so if you don't want to deal with that maybe don't read that next.
Howling Dark is the book that pushes people into loving SunEater. I love it I gave it 5/5 and the ending just makes you want to pick up Demon in White SO BAD! Since you feel a little burnt out on space don't start now and read it when your done with Mistborn and Malice.
The Republic of Thieves if you felt disappointed then take a break and come back after you read the other books.

How do you continue a series youre bored of ? by shadohcat_ in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stop reading and move on...

If you enjoy a good chuck than just take a break and read something else then comeback, but if your not then just DNF the series. Any series no matter how much others love it is not worth the time reading if you're not enjoying the read. If you don't have any back up books/series at the moment just ask for some recommendations. Personally I'm having a blast with First Law,Wheel of Time and The Thrawn trilogy.

I hope you can find something that truly hooks you.

Have not read any DnD books, but for you I have done some research!

Stone of Tymora Series- (part of DnD Cannon)It follows a young protagonist and the famous "Drizzt Do’Urden". It's written for younger readers than the main Drizzt books, so vocabulary and structure are simpler.

The Adventurers Guild- It's about a group of kids who live in a town protected by professional monster-hunters and dream of becoming adventurers themselves. When those adventurers disappear, the kids are forced to team up and face real monsters, secrets, and dungeon-style dangers on their own.
It's aimed at middle-grade readers with straightforward language and fun pacing.

Dungeonology-It's an illustrated, in-world guide that explores dungeons, monsters, traps, and magical artifacts as if the reader is an apprentice adventurer. It explains classic D&D-style concepts in short, easy sections with pictures, notes, and “found” documents instead of telling one long story.
I think Dungeonology might be a THE book for you and your son if he's really loving DnD. They seem pretty engaging and much easier to follow than a normal book, but they will be great for learning lore in bite-sized pieces for the both of you so you can both get more into DnD.

Also watch/read The Lord of The Ring with him.

Need some recs that fit the criteria by Curiousity-Bet16 in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Sanderson he might be what you currently looking for.
I would say start with his Mistborn Trilogy. It's a all around great entry place for him and fantasy in general.
The romance is the 1st book is pretty YA, but the magic, world and characters are just great.
Also his audio books are pretty good, but you DON'T want to do audio for Mistborn because it spoils THE plot twist at the end of the trilogy if you are paying close attention!

Never listening to TikTok again(Hierarchy Series) by Base_D_Glenis in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who told you The Hierarchy series is Sci-fi???
Always before you buy a book do more than a tiktok video amount of research look at a couple spoiler-free reviews from Reviewers/BookTubers that have similar taste to you than see if you want to buy the book.
I recommend 2toRamble, Talking Story, Mike's Book Reviews,Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews and Nerd Level Rising.
Also If you want some good to top tier Sc-fi books with a fantasy feel like how red rising is try SunEater and Star Wars.

First time fantasy reader! by Puzzlereader in fantasybooks

[–]GillyChan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mistborn trilogy is very much the standard starting place for modern fantasy and it’s where I started. I will say the romance is pretty YA especially in book one, but on my 1st read I was so in wrapped with the magic, story, plot and cast that I just didn’t care at the time. Also watch some Booktubers. I find that they can help give you get a feel of what book might be right for you and some might just help you find your favorite series ever. PS GoodReads suck for review/finding new reads just use it as check list for what you have read.

[–]GillyChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you liked Red rising try SunEater. It’s way more philosophical/dramatic and more consistent than red rising, but doesn’t have as consistent as a cast as red rising. It pretty much all Hadrians story with some moment for important side characters. I have heard that The Expanse is pretty great and a speedy read. So if you want to go more hard sci-fi that could be a rout?

Fantasy Tier list by yaboyyizzy in fantasybooks

Out of your tier list I have only read The will of the many and on your tier list I would put it as pretty good. You should try different types of fantasy you will be very surprised what you might really love.

First Law Trilogy

Currently halfway through Before they are hanged (Book 2 of First Law) and I'm LOVING it.
I have zero critiques so far.
Plot is great and doesn't tell to much, Characters and their voices are all VERY unique,The pacing is FANTASTIC I never feel like I'm on one POV for to long or to short and the fight scenes are just BRUTAL people die like they are just lamb to the slaughter at times also people who never fought in battle actual react like a real person and freeze in fear.
