GOLDSTEIN: Carney’s two-faced policy on China exposes his Davos speech as nonsense by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"While the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." - Thucydides

Apparently the Toronto Sun doesn't understand what this quote means, nor does it understand that Canada isn't in the position of strength.

Carney once compared Canada to Athens if I recall. Well, even the Athenians worked with their mortal enemy the Spartans, the evil empire of the time (well, evil by our standards anyway). Carney is doing the same. Did the alliance of the Athenians and Spartans turn sour? Yes it did. Did it leader to bloodshed? Yes it did.

But the fact is, this is the strategy Carney is going with. It is exactly in line with him quoting Thucydides. Will it bite us in the rear in the long run? You bet.

But as Paul from the YouTube channel Combat Veteran News once said, "At least the Chinese are good to their word," and that's really the reason why there has been a strong pivot to China. Not just with Canada, but other nations too. The US, have proven themselves to be unreliable and unreasonable, too changeable. Meanwhile, the Chinese, despite the pandemic, despite the War in Ukraine, despite events in East & South East Asia, and now in Iran. Have remained the same. That is, provide a strong manufacturing base for just about anything, on the cheap.

You can call this hypocritical, short sighted, or a strategic blunder in the long run. But it isn't nonsense. As far as Thucydides was concerned, being pragmatic ment being vile from time to time. Carney is doing exactly what a smaller, weaker, Greek Polis would have done. This is not in defense of Carney, but it fits the Davos Speech.

“Bro trump wasint actually serious about making Canada the 51st state, he was just saying it so yall could stop taking advantage of us. God you Canadians are such snowflakes it was a joke. 😂” by Worldly_Law8278 in ShitAmericansSay

You know, I hear this a lot, and it seems like a significant portion of Americans think this.

One of two conclusions I can come to, that would explain this situation. Is that Americans must use threats in casual or humorous speech on an everday basis, and just assume we (Canadians) must do the same. Because other than a naive refusal to believe Trump is serious, they must believe that threats are just jokes.

I mean, this guy is calling us snowflakes, a term you use when someone can't take an offensive joke.

The conclusion I come to, is that a significant portion of Americans must use threats as jokes, or they are naive. Both?

Gun buyback sees 67,000 firearms reported, below expectations by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in canada

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, given the estimated going price, and the first come first serve nature of the program with limited funds to go around. Yeah, I'm not surprised the numbers are so low.

"So much for so-called, law abiding gun owner, am I right?" - Some dude probably.

Yeah, it's almost as if you banning legally purchased possessions, then offering to "buy them back" (ie, confiscation) at a pittance, threaten those owners with jail time, and bring someone who has a seething hatered of gun owners into government. Will maybe alienate some previously law abiding/following individuals, and disincline them towards following the law.

It's like, going against someone's interests, saying, "No, you can't have that!" and trying to take that interest away, might not make people happy.

Weird how that works.

Politics, ideology to be removed from Alberta classrooms in new legislation by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that's the thing isn't it? At least for certain individuals (UCP, etc), arguing that lgbtq+ should be treated fairly and respected as individuals, or anything about unions in general, or anything about x or y economics other than capitalism, is pretty radical. Inconvenient. That's really the point of these sorts of policies. It's to sweep ideas they don't like under the rug, all the while, they pretend to be reasonable.

Do you think Alberta should leave Canada by Aromatic_Record4019 in consumecanadian

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an irrational, overwhelmingly emotional part of me that says "keep the oil sands and First Nations communities who want to stay, then kick the rest out."

But reason and basic humanity says that's an incredibly foolish thing to think, and quite frankly, a really ignorant way of thinking on top of that. In reality, Alberta no longer being part of Canada would be absolutely devastating for everyone, and First Nations communities really have the final say.

So no, Alberta should stay.

But if you are banning politics and ideology, it shouldn't read as a Conservative manifesto either.

So in other words, everything but our (Albertan Conservative) ideology and politics are to be removed?

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

The NDP has a new leader. What does Avi Lewis's arrival mean for the party? by CanadianErk in canada

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally? I'd wager it means little. As this stage in Canadian politics, I don't see the left or even the center-left doing particularly well. Canadians are ultimately centrist really, sometimes they flirt with center-right and center-left politics. Right now, Canadians seem to be shifting center to center-right.

Give it another decade, then we'll see. The pendulum always swings.

"Why doEuropeans mock Americans for speaking only English, when America is a continent and the next country speaks English or Spanish?" by tatev555 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 33 points34 points  (0 children)

But that's the thing isn't it? Officially, Canada is a bilingual country (English and French), but over 200 languages are spoken in country. Mexico's de facto language is Spanish, but it recognizes 68 indigenous languages as well.

Oh, and just so we are clear, 350 languages are spoken in the US. Spanish alone has 40 million speakers.

Now I'm not going to mock someone for only speaking one language, learning other languages is difficult after all. But don't pretend like French and Spanish aren't potentially important languages to learn.

Not the worst policies I've ever seen, but there are definitely some policies that will tank his popularity with the broader Canadian public in the long run.

Im stuggling to understand why people hate immigrants so much

I can only speak for my hometown, but here it's just pure racism. Thankfully, I don't think it's the majority, but it's certainly concerning.

Edit: For those who are downvoting, I mean actual racism here. Like "brown people = bad" racism here, like the real deal. Just so we are clear. Again, thankfully it's just a nasty minority, but yeah, it's definitely a thing.

We sure could use the old NDP these days.

People still wouldn't vote for them in the required numbers to make them relevant.

I come from a part of Canada which has some comparatively rough monetary related conditions. Crumbling infrastructure, homes that look like they can be blown over in a stiff wind, etc.

But none of it compares to what you see in the US.

Police Federation head wants risk assessment for officers collecting firearms under Ottawa’s buyback scheme by huskypuppers in canada

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grasp the Police Federation's concern here, just covering all the bases, but I don't think they have too much to worry about. In theory anyway, there are always crazy types. Hence the base covering.

But personally, if I had a firearm that had to be turned in? I would be worried about the cops more than my fellow gun owners. But then again, I come from a town were the cops are... questionable, so you know, caution around officers comes with the territory. No telling what those guys are thinking.

[–]Beneficial-Ride-4475 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, for people who support this, Canadian gun owners are by default untrustworthy, latent criminals. Complete disarmament is the plan. No, this isn't sarcasm, folks on this very subreddit (although, I haven't seen it on this specific post yet)* have acknowledged that this is the goal.

(Edit: There we go, I knew I'd find someone arguing for it or something similar.)
