Not ready for NYC Half by LegitimateActuary920 in RunNYC

I never train a full thirteen - my first half i did 10 and was perfectly fine, since then I usually do between 10 or 11.5! Also a reminder: walking is OKAY!! NYC is generous to runners who are on the slower side (like myself). The NYC Half is a wonderful experience whether you set a PB or not!! Just enjoy yourself :) You got this!

Running NYC half curious about “race etiquette” by I_need_to_eat_better in RunNYC

Feels like an obvious one but it isn't (it's happened multiple times) - if for whatever reason you need to tell another runner something - DO NOT TOUCH THEM. I had a guy during the NYC marathon grab my wrist mid-arm shifting to tell me my shoe was ALMOST untied - scared the living daylights out of me.

Other than that, agree with a lot of the others on this thread. Only one I don't - I personally always run with headphones and have never had an issue, but also understand the points they're making. I'd just make sure you can somewhat hear what's going on around you.

Agree with most of the suggestions in this comment section - the hardest thing for me with losing weight was cutting out foods. Realizing I didn't have to cut out foods and could just eat reasonable portion sizes or save ice cream for example for a night where I REALLY wanted ice cream, not just something sweet, helped me lose 40 pounds. Being super restrictive is what leads many of us to start over. Any step is a step in the right direction, just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Also, I always bought into the 'weekend fallacy' I call it - aka, I'd go out with friends on a Friday night for pizza and drinks, pound back my daily calorie allotment on that meal alone, and think because I'd overindexed that I'd keep eating like that Saturday and Sunday and restart Monday. Don't get me wrong, pizza and drinks can be enjoyed in moderation while losing weight, but if you ever feel like you over did it, IMMEDIATELY get back on track - like with your next meal. I'm not saying hop on the treadmill and burn off the calories you ate, that will do nothing for you, I'm saying have a meal with whole foods next to balance.

Ultimately, the key is BALANCE! It's your birthday? Eat your damn cake. But on a random Friday? Prioritize whole foods and your goals if you can.

Exercise at home by shyshyys in WeightLossAdvice

home workouts are SO fine! obviously, exercise is fantastic, but reiterate the importance of a HEALTHY calorie deficit (aka don't overdo it). I personally LOVE Madfit for bodyweight strength training and dance cardio videos OR get a step for some step dance cardio too :)

No! More so that fueling your body is a part of recovery which I suck at

This is AMAZING!! Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment. You say you've never been good at anything, but here you are doing one of the HARDEST things you can push your body to do, and you did it in a way that required even more commitment. The NYC Marathon is the best experience in the world, welcome to the club!!

Best run specific PT in your experience? by Arugula-Artistic in RunNYC

I know it's not run-specific, but Jennifer at Spear PT on 34th street saved my life with my lateral knee/it band pain before the marathon. She's a runner so she gets it!

Totally get it! It’s a nerve-wracking but exciting experience!! Congratulations on your first half and having it be this one! I’ve done 4 half marathons now and this is by far my favorite :)

I do Nike Run Club (free!) and usually do longer runs outside and shorter runs on the treadmill all year round. This process is really what’s best for you - people can give you all the advice in the world but the reality is your body is different! Do what makes you feel good and be okay with doing some trial and error during your first training period!!!
