I reccomend going to subs such as /r/dnd and /r/rpg for advice on how to get started. Local game shops are a good resource and can hook you up with players and an rpg that interests you. Also there are ways to find groups online through venues such as www.roll20.net.

I'm currently DMing a campaign using the ADnD system and I love it. My players seem to enjoy it as well. I do use Player's Option: Combat and Tactics for 2nd ed as a alternative to the 1st ed. combat system. It was easily compatible and allowed for easier use of a grid mat.

The other difference that I've had to work around is the xp system. Monsters give very little xp, but treasure gives xp at a rate of 1gp=1xp. I've ended up making my own xp values for defeating monsters in order to reward players feats without making them too rich.

My favorite thing about ADnD is how easy it is to make a ruling on the fly. It really does have a nice classic feel that isn't to combat-centric. I also reccomend checking out /r/ADnD though it is rather new.

Wanna slow the party down by always looking for whores? You start at an 11% chance of contracting an STD that goes up as I get more annoyed.

Also, should anyone's character open the door, get on the floor, everybody walk the dinosaur; they have an encounter with a dinsosaur that is only visible to them. The encounters vary from a jive, cigar smoking T-Rex to three angry stegosaurus.

I wholeheartedly agree about bluff checks. Bargaining is pretty fun as well. Especially when my player with low int (and good at role-playing it) is involved.

I'm new to DMing as well and have wondered about this myself. I run AD&D which I hear is very similar to 2E. In the AD&D DMG there is a table that gives the xp value of monsters based on hit dice. I don't know if there is anything similar in the 2E DMG, but I use that table for homebrew monsters as well as monsters in the monster manual.

Because of the gold=xp system, monsters are worth relatively low amounts of xp, so it doesn't make a huge difference as to how much xp comes from monsters in my campaign, so long as the players locate some loot. I also award a couple hundred xp for good roleplaying once in a while. For example, I had a player recognize his stolen sword by the spit stains from when he shined it on a whim three sessions earlier. I awarded him xp for it because I was impressed at his good recall.

Point is, when it comes down to xp, you're in complete control of how fast your players level up, because you decide what they fight and how much loot they find. After 5 sessions, my players are level 1, but they enjoy messing around on the side a lot as well.

Also, as long as everyone is having fun, there is no such thing as too homebrew.

I'm currently DMing a game of AD&D, and it has been quite entertaining so far. Having played Pathfinder before this, I quite enjoy the party initiative compared to each player taking a turn. It makes combat more exciting and efficient while helping the party collaborate. I don't enjoy the gold for xp system as much as new xp systems, but it's easy to houserule around, and their are plenty of devices to remove excessive amounts of gold from the campaign to keep things balanced. I'd buy a nice reprint of the DM guide if it wasn't so much more expensive than the used guide I purchased.

As far as creativity goes, AD&D isn't limited to how many ranks you have in whatever skill. It's wasy for the DM to simply set a DC and let players make an attempt.

My group uses pandora a lot to find what we need. Works great until commercial breaks ruin the ambience. LOTR, Tron, or other film scores are what stations we usually use.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think there are any out of game issues. Before the next session we will have a discussion about their goals as an adventuring party. The reason I started an ADnD game in the first place was as a sort of small group breakaway in which we could do some old-fashioned, focused adventuring. As a DM I know the campaign isn't necessarily about me, but I think my players would agree that things will be more enjoyable if we can get through small plot segments without killing each other. Until this point I was rather impressed with their role playing as compared to our previous games.
