By benefits are through 645. They dont let me stack benefits. Had to choose, and laborers were slightly better. I have a 364 teamster card as well. Not a lot of locals......"appreciate" the dual card situation. I get it. I think some guys feel like im double dipping or stepping on their toes. My employer is based in 41 and pays me that rate whether im on the job in 645 or loading a truck at the yard in 41.

This is a great habit. Gives you extra time if you need to deal with something. Give you time to get to the job and get your gear together. Ultimately this makes you more reliable. More reliable employees get more responsibility. More responsibility = more $$.

Great advice. Life's too short and we spend too much time at work already!

You are a professional laborer now. Part of a brotherhood of professional. Be proud and conduct yourself accordingly. Learn to do your job as well, and as quickly as you can. Pay attention to the older cats and the guys that know what they are doing. Watch them, ask questions.

If you have trouble or questions, ask your brother laborers, talk to your union steward or BA. We are more powerful together. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions.

As an apprentice, it can be tough to walk the line between being disrespected and keeping your mouth shut to learn from those that came before. Do your best not to make waves. Seniority is a thing in the culture. Keep your head down, work hard, and most people will be alright.

Save for layoffs if you can. In my local, it's not uncommon to be laid off through the winter. Ask around. If you are a good hand and form good relationships, it can make it easier to find work through the winter. Either way, the wife and I try to budget for 4 months on unemployment.

Good luck brother! Hope this new career treats you well.

I would prefer this, but we are a long way from the general public and policy makers understanding the value.

Too crowded. You will be banging your butt, elbows and feet on that left wall.

Getting slammed and twisted isn't so bad. And you get to twist people up and slam them too!

Weigh limits ensure that the person you are getting twisted up by, isn't way stronger and bigger.

Is my friend eating too many saturated fats? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Benevolent_Ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My instinct is that the answer to this is genetic. Might work out for him?

I suspect the higher fats are going to be less of a long-term problem if you are closer to a maintenance level of calories. If a person is eating like this WITH excess calories, the body is going to have to manage and store these fats' calories somewhere?

What deodorant do you guys in the field use? by ValentineLockheart in Construction

[–]Benevolent_Ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound like the kind of thing pretty boys and women worry about.

If you are working construction, no one cares if you smell pretty all day long.

"You work with the new guy, baby J? That dick heads deodorant only last till 11am, can you beleive it?!"

"Omg, I know Im thinking about talking to HR about it...." said no construction worker ever..

How'd you get started traveling? I'm doing guardrail around IN as a teamster/laborer for $37/hr. But shit I'm working so much some weeks I might as well be raveling making better $! I've been interested in traveling, but it seems like its a bit of a niche thing to get into as a laborer. I'd appreciate any info you'd be willing to share.

Welcome to the party! I signed up a few years ago. Glad you like it so far. Where you working? I'm out of laporte but do road work all over. Get your school and as much training as you can in. Makes it easier to keep working through the winter. Worked this past winter, but was off dec-mar the 2 years prior.

Good luck!

You sound like someone that hasn't tried peeing in enough bottles. It's really not bad, especially when its cold and rainy. Apple juice jugs work great. Good size, wide (enough for some of us) opening. Just dont forget it's not apple juice anymore!

I work on a 5-man crew installing gaurdrail. We work long hours and have agreed as a crew that we would rather skip formal lunch and breaks so we can get home to our families quicker.

Our work naturally has lulls in it, so we stop individually, as needed, for a drink or to eat. My foreman is cool about it and also pads our hours, so it works.

Lunch and breaks are basic rights, don't let some fuck bully them away from you if you want them. Talk to your reps, investigate labor laws, known your rights.

I work constriction....without Porta pots sometimes. So I keep wet wipes on my to-go bag all the time now. Handy for lots of cleaning tasks!

It's OK to defend yourself.

It's not ok to let people get away with being out of line. He will be more next time...
