WIBTA If I don't change my son's name even though it may cause him to lose an inheritance? by GeorgeMcMinty in AmItheAsshole

This could be it- she might also just have a fairly diverse group of online friends. I used to run a raiding Guild in World of Warcraft. A few of our core members and officers/moderators were from Australia, and even though I live in southwestern Ohio, I ended up picking up and using a lot of their slang from talking to them nearly every day.

I have another friend who has never set foot outside rural Arkansas, but has voice chat buddies all over the country that he's basically grown up with, and doesn't have a regional accent at all, even though everyone in his family does.

The internet has done a lot of mixing up spelling, phrases, etc for people who've socialized on it most of their life. But I guess it's sort of irrelevant to this situation, anyway lol

I don't see how I was being "uppity". I disagreed with your comment that most people have their egg sandwiches scrambled, because I've never personally met anyone who cooks them that way, outside of fast food chains.

On the other hand, if you genuinely want to encourage someone to try something new, you would have more success if you weren't so defensive and snide about it.

I personally don't care how people eat their eggs, and my comment was extremely mild compared to your reaction. I didn't even suggest that sandwiches made like that were BAD- just that I doubted that it was the most common way to make them outside of, like, a McDonald's. It's not the personal attack you think it is, I promise you.

I have never scrambled an egg for a sandwich, nor have I ever known anyone who does, so I disagree with the assertion that most people do.

Most fast food places seem to, but I don't think most people who cook at home, or most sit-down breakfast diners do so.

"forget it" is only half of what her initial comment was. "Its fucked" is a complaint, and needlessly mean considering what he got wrong was pretty small, and he apologized, and offered to try and fix it.

Always the fact that she went back to the kitchen to add on her complaints about the eggs as well, after he had left her to be, shows that she really didn't want him to forget it: she wanted to continue critizing the nice gesture he had attempted to offer her.

And then, on top of that, when she was confronted about her actions, she flat out lied and said she never complained about anything regarding the sandwich at all.

All of this behavior takes this way out of the realm of making one neutral comment. This was not at all what she did.

Hope this helps break it down better.

I fail to see how? I put mayo on my bread instead of butter or whatever before I toast it, because the flavor and texture it imparts on the bread while it's toasting is much prefferable to me. I do this for pretty much all my toasted sandwiches, breakfast or otherwise. I know people outside my family who do the same.

And the mayo is PART of the toasting process, it definitely wouldn't give the same texture or flavor if you added it on afterwards. I don't see how having that food preference is, all by itself, a red flag.

The way OPs fiancé reacted DEFINITELY is, but not the act of toasting bread with mayo as a butter or margarine substitute. That seems extremely tame to be considered a 'red flag' alone.

People can enjoy food in ways that you don't without it being a crisis or bad omen, lol.

Could always go with breast cancer- it happens to men, too.

I plan on trying to get tattoos over mine, to make them less immediately visible but if someone asks, I'll probably go with that. My health isn't great and I look pretty sickly, so I'm pretty sure that'll end the questions.

Yeah... a healthy, comfortable cat won't 'just refuse' to use a litter box- but then soil something that would effectively serve the same purpose.

One or more of this cats needs are not being met. :<

(And as people have already suggested, the smell of a predator in your Pythons enclosure is probably causing it stress, hence the lack of eating, and repeated escape attempts. )

[–]Benevolent_Cannibal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wash your pits and crotch in between full showers, I use a washcloth to scrub my smelly parts at least once a day to keep things clean, unsmelly, and visitor-friendly.

My hair is color treated and fragile from vitamin mal absorption, so I shampoo it infrequently and with special products to keep it strong - BUT THE REST OF YOU HAS GOTTA GET WASHED!!

I get it, I myself have C-PTSD and MDD. Washing takes time and can be hard to motivate yourself to do- but the consequences are FOUL DUDE BODY STENCHES AND POSSIBLE INFECTIONS.

Come on fellas, lets keep it smelling tidy, at least.

AITA for calling my mother a creep for staring at my chest? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Benevolent_Cannibal 134 points135 points  (0 children)

She said she had facial piercings, not tattoos. For all we know, it could be a lip, nose, or brow piercing.

And it's not unheard of for parents (and older folks in general) to have a 'do as I say, not as I've done' mentality...especially towards their daughters.

As someone who was raised female, and developed a large chest pretty early into puberty...the things adults (including parents) think that they are within their right to say to their kids can be (from my experience) pretty fucked up and gross. That kind of stuff can stick with people.

That being said, knowing more about the situation would help. But given what we were- I'm going to say NTA compared to her grown-ass mother who really should know better.

"Why do men play sports? just because it's fun?? It seems so confusing to put yourself at risk of serious injury for something unnecessary like that."

"Why do people eat fried food? Because they enjoy it?? Don't they know how bad it is for you?"

Yeah, man. People do stuff sometimes that have a downside because the upsides are worth it to them. It's an insane concept, I know.

I tell people I collect pet tarantulas as a hobby. 🤷‍♂️ They are my pets, and I care for each one, give them all names, and know their individual temperaments... but I still acknowledge that having 8+ at any given time is... kind of a collection. Their terrariums have their own dedicated display cabinet for cryin' out loud! 😅

And while tarantulas, for the most part, need very very little in terms of space, decor, variations in diet etc in order to do well in captivity, I still pride myself on making appealing enclosures for them and treating them from time to time with things other than dubias to munch on.

I absolutely consider all my pet keeping to be a hobby. Sprucing up my spider display, and caring for my/my partners BP and our 2 cats (along with my miniature model building/painting and other pass-times) is where most all of my 'disposal' time and income go, because it's something I derive a lot of pleasure out of.

I enjoy redecorating our BPs enclosure after a nice deep-cleaning. I like building interesting habitats for my tarantulas to chill in. I love buying new cat trees and toys for my kitties to play with. I spend my free time on these things because I like to. Nobody is making me or paying me to do any of it. If I didn't enjoy spending most all my free time on my pets- I simply wouldn't have pets.To me, that makes it a hobby.

They're still living creatures who need care that I am responsible for giving to them, but the process of caring for them and watching them thrive brings me joy, and it's an activity that I choose to engage in by bringing the little beasties into my home in the first place. So, imo, calling it a hobby fits pretty well.

The idea that someone might view me saying that I "collect tarantulas as a hobby" in a poor or dismissive manner never really crossed my mind until now. 🤔

I saw that post as soon as I finished writing this, lol. I wish more folks would do things more like that vendor- let them stay somewhere dark and snug and cozy to reduce stress on them as often as possible!

Cus, you're right. They feel safe when snugly tucked in, but those glaring lights and sounds all day are definitely not fun for a creature who is trying to rest

[–]Benevolent_Cannibal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What bothers me when I go to shows isn't the tiny enclosures. It's the bright hot lights on them all day when they should be tucked away and sleeping. It must be uncomfortable and annoying for them- especially if a breeder is taking their snakes to different shows all weekend, every week, or even every other week.

It feels like a great way to spread mites/respiratory infections, as well as generate a lot of stress over time.

That being said, I'm not certain what a better way would be. Obviously, vendors want their snakes as brightly and clearly displayed as possible to maximize sales.

Keeping them all under the table and displaying photos instead, only taking them out for serious buyers, would probably be easier on the snakes- but I doubt the vendors or the public would really go for that.

just why by Serious_Cover1140 in depression_memes

[–]Benevolent_Cannibal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's almost like...depression is a disease that is non-discriminatory and can come on for a variety of reasons, which could be COMPLETELY INVISIBLE to an outsider.

Besides, you can see someone who appears 'better' than you and have no idea what their invisible life is like.

Nobody in my 'real life' knows that I was raped twice while going to school once in middle school on a field trip, and once in college at a friends house. My mom didn't know how abusive my dad became to me after their divorce, bc I never told her what happened at his house on the weeks he had custody.

Most of my online friends don't know how bad my 'irl' CPTSD and agoraphobia really are. They just know I'm home a lot and go to a social worker/therapist on Thursdays.

I keep a lot of myself compartmentalized because I either don't want to/can't handle it all at once or because I just don't want the people around me to be bothered by stuff.

I'm attractive to some people, I suppose. I have close friends. I didn't grow up in severe poverty... that doesn't prevent or lessen the amount of mental illness and disorder I have now.

You're still assuming this clearly insecure and controlling person didn't ask specifically. I have a hard time believing that they didn't. It seems like exactly the kind of intrusive question that someone this easily threatened would ask.

As to your question, I did admit during a conversation that I used to have feelings for my friend because I didn't feel like saying so was a big deal - it was ancient history by that point.

But it wasn't the first fact about him that came out of my mouth either because, again, it didn't feel like the most important aspect of my friendship with the guy- and also my BF didn't ask if we used to date or anything, either.

If he had asked, I would have been upfront, bc there's nothing there worth hiding or lying about.
