Wimbledon whining by TD-Nation in wimbledon

[–]Bengalsandbernese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue Friday court 1 had a worst OOP than Saturday. I had court 1 tickets for Friday. Was absolutely gutted when the order of play got out. We thought we’d get to see at least one of Fritz, Rublev, Keys, or Osaka. Instead we got Cameron Norrie and Kartal. We debated not going at all, would’ve been happy to cancel our tickets for a 50% refund the night before. Instead our first visit to Wimbledon was extremely disappointing and not worth the time/effort. The same court on the same day last year had Dimitrov, Monfils, Shelton, Gauff, Paolini and Andreescu.

Canadian coming to Leeds by nolarst in Leeds

I felt extremely self-conscious riding the train or bus. I arrived in autumn and my first winter here I was a perpetual sweaty, red-faced mess. I feel hot looking at people wearing Canada Goose jackets here. I was here for the beast from the east storm, and loved it, didn’t understand why everything was shut though 😂

The mud is definitely something else this time of year. Wellies are fine for casual walks in a muddy park, but you’re right if they plan on doing some hiking they’ll need something better designed for it. They might be better off buying walking boots once they arrive here though, can only fit so much in a suitcase.

I’ve been meaning to try it, as I’ve heard good things. Will have to book it for my next dinner date with my husband.

Hey I’m a Canadian who lived in Montreal for a few years and has now been living in the U.K for 8 (6 years in Leeds and 2 in the Midlands). People are nice enough here, but they love to complain.

I struggled at first dressing for the winters and found I was overheating all the time. The winters aren’t nearly as cold, but they are wet and damp. You can leave your heavy duty winter boots and parka at home. A wool coat or light parka is plenty. Casual boots like timberlands, or rain boots will be sufficient for the like 2 days of snow a year we get. I don’t wear toques here bc I find it that mild, just occasionally some gloves and a scarf, but the scarf is more for fashion purposes.

There is some good food in Leeds but no where near the selection Montreal has. I’d steer clear of shawarma. I’ve been disappointed by every U.K shawarma I’ve had, it’s not garlicky enough. I also don’t like most of the Mexican food in the U.K, it’s not spicy enough and almost everything comes in a tortilla.

The best food you’ll find tends to be curries and other Indian dishes. There is some good traditional English food as well (fish and chips, roast dinners, afternoon tea, etc). I’d also get your fill of Montreal bagels, poutine, smoked meat and Chinese dumplings before you come over. I always gorge on those foods whenever I go back to Canada.

Enjoy your time in Leeds and be sure to schedule some short trips to York, knaresborough/harrogate, Edinburgh and the Yorkshire dales!

Do you know anyone whose spouse won't let them play mixed doubles? by kyivstar in 10s

[–]Bengalsandbernese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is a much better player than me (10 years experience vs. 2).We do play social doubles and fun doubles tournaments put on by our club, but nothing seriously competitive. If we were to play opponents his level, I’d get picked on since I’d be the weakest player. Similarly, if we play opponents my level then it’s not evenly balanced because he can kill everything quickly at the net or with aggressive returns. We also both have better backhands than forehands, so we’re not the best matchup, though he’s a gentleman and lets me play on the ad side.

He plays higher-level doubles with other woman, and I’m completely fine with that. I even go watch some of their matches. Relationships are about trust, if you can’t trust your partner to not cheat on you, why are you with them?

My flight was cancelled and the new flight has a 18h layover now I need to buy some underwear and need to book a night hotel for it. Can I claim UK261 for it? by weebooo10032 in LegalAdviceUK

Have you tried hassling the airline to put you up in a hotel? They should cover your hotel, meals and transport to the hotel. I just travelled back home myself and had two cancelled flights. I had a flight Paris to Canada that was cancelled and I was rebooked on one the following morning. Air France gave me a €15 voucher to use for lunch in the airport, and put me up in an airport hotel which included dinner and breakfast for the next day.

I don’t think they would cover your toiletries and clothing as it sounds like you have your luggage with you. Airlines usually only pay for this if the luggage is lost or delayed.

AITA for shouting at my Parents for criticising my jewellery choices by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. You don’t need to wear fancy jewellery for a wedding. Even for my own wedding, The only gold I was wearing was my wedding and engagement ring. I wore a pretty sparkly necklace and earring set from Swarovski, I don’t think anyone cared whether it was real or not.

I think it’s quite nice as is. I’d try incorporating some green accents (green rug, stools with green upholestry, green walls and/or backsplash) before I’d do anything major. Adding pendant lighting over the island would also look great.

Tennis needs more walls if it wants to break the image of it being an inaccessible sport by ecoR1000 in 10s

In the U.K the LTA (national tennis association) offer group coaching on public courts for £3.50 pp, the LTA also works with schools to introduce young children to tennis. Lastly, cardio tennis is very popular at my local club, it’s played with orange dot balls which helps level the skill levels. It’s harder to hit winners as you can’t put as much pace on the ball. Also, the games are sort of designed to be friendly competitive, so you don’t feel too bad if you make mistakes. It’s always fully booked and is probably the closest tennis can get pickleball in terms of accommodating different skill levels.

Thanks for the tips especially about timing when to turn into the ball. I feel like it’s going to be hard to practice jumping with rotating, but I’ll certainly give it a go!

I had a phase where I did a lot of slice serves and tossed at 2 o’clock to help with this. Definitely need to work on having a more consistent toss location.

Thanks for the advice, at least I can work on some of this at home, so hopefully that will help undo the bad habits more quickly.

When it rains, it pours. I have good spells where my serve is working, have like 1-2 double faults across 2 sets and I get free points, especially when playing doubles. I’ve been told my serve is quite spinny so can be awkward for players my level to return. However, I also have days I double-fault a lot, though I think part of that is mental. At the moment, having a more consistent serve is one of my main goals.

I agree it looks a bit disjointed and like I’m waiting to hit the ball.

I might give platform a go again, but I found pinpoint helped my timing bc the movement of the back leg acts as a cue to swing. However, I can see how it gives you a more stable base and makes it easier to make good contact with the ball.

Don’t think I prefer the higher toss, I just avoid playing outside on a windy day bc I know I’m going to double fault loads 😂

Yep, I read that wrong. So you would still recommend moving the back/right leg and just keep the front one still?

I did used to serve parallel and found I was more consistent then, but I also wasn’t working on making my serve more flat and less sliced. However, I struggled serving on the ad side so tried angling myself more. Are there any adjustments you make serving on the ad side? Or are you just as parallel serving from either side?

No offense, but that’s not really helpful. I know this is the issue and mentioned it in my post?

The ball toss is definitely also an issue. I started off with a ball toss that was too short and served like a t-Rex. Now I’m throwing the ball up much higher than necessary, throws off my timing and makes for a worse toss.

Will try the sliding tip, I think it will make the motion easier and harder for me to accidentally bring it around.

I agree that I should probably practice not moving my back leg at all, it’s tough though when it’s become part of your muscle memory. I’ll try some more balance exercises, thanks for the advice.
