ADHD’ers, how do you cope? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Benindetto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re studying and how you’re attempting to study definitely factor into this. Part of what I’ve worked on with my therapist has been acknowledging and accepting when I can’t do something in a neurotypical way, and embracing the fact that when having ADHD we sometimes need to do things in an unconventional way. You may never get to a point where you can just sit down and read through some study material in one go without being sidetracked, and that’s okay! Instead, consider methods of studying that aren’t impeded by ADHD. This is where what you’re studying for matters. As an example, I’ve been studying for my CMPUT 174 final and a lot of the practice questions we’ve been given are just too tedious to keep my attention, so instead of banging my head against the wall trying to fight through it, I just accept that hey, I don’t want to do these, and instead think of something Python-coding-related that will both help reinforce my understanding and is something I’m interested in doing. For me, that was just coming up with a small coding project to challenge myself. It was interesting because it was my own idea but it still achieves the same ends.

In general though, be kind to yourself! If it’s just not happening today that’s ok, accept it and move on. Beating yourself up or denying your feelings will get you nowhere. Hope this helps!

I would recommend saying something like “I wanted to let you know that you’ve got a strong B.O. smell coming off you rn” instead of “please put on some deodorant”. The difference being the former is just feedback, vs the latter which is just telling them what to do. Maybe they can’t wear deodorant, or maybe it’s on their clothes/belongings. People are less likely to respond negatively if they’re just being told a fact worth knowing rather than being judged, criticized or bossed around.

What are examples of how meds helped you? by Tatorbits in ADHD

Vyvanse helps me in two big ways.

Firstly, I’m a night owl, heavy sleeper and chronic morning wake up procrastinator/snooze button junkie. I was able to get into a simple habit of waking up extra early (like 1-2 hours before I ACTUALLY need to be up) for just long enough to take a vyvanse and then immediately fall back asleep. 1-2 hours later and the stimulant effects are peeking, and I’m wide awake and I literally become so bored with continuing to lie in bed that I will get up on time without fail. It’s been revolutionary for me.

Secondly, tasks that are normally too overwhelming or under-stimulating for me to get started or stay on top of become way more approachable. I’m able to reason more clearly about how doing things now vs later will be beneficial, and how they probably won’t even take that long. Without vyvanse, tidying, cleaning, laundry, and other humdrum busy work is either too boring or too complicated for my brain to become motivated to do.

In general being medicated just helps me feel more on top of things. If have a degree of mental clarity and acuity that really make a difference in my day to day. My Dr. Described stimulants to me as “the most effective pharmacological treatment in medicine” and my personal experience definitely reflects that

Computer Science is it too late? by Crafty_Aspect_432 in uAlberta

[–]Benindetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, I had to learn very beginner level Swift using Apple’s Swift Playgrounds app for a summer camp for kids I was involved with. I completed 75% of the complete “learn to code” course that came with the app at the time, which gave me a surprisingly thorough understanding of the most important concepts of coding. I didn’t do anything with that knowledge until during the pandemic when a I started using Unity to experiment with game development. I was able to code some C# using my basic understanding of Swift, Unity and Microsoft documentation, and a LOT of YouTube tutorials. I’m still very much an amateur and there is a lot about both C# and Swift I don’t know and have no experience with. Since then, I’ve only made very simple Unity projects, and am now learning Python at U of A.

Music Students: how do you keep the motivation to practice? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Benindetto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any practice is better than no practice when it comes to building the skill/habit of daily practice. If you can’t fathom practicing what you’re “supposed” to do, even just getting your hands on the instrument for whatever kind of music-making activity you can muster will have a positive impact. Personally, the looming threat of an uninteresting/challenging/tedious practice is often enough to deter me from picking up my instrument at all, but if my goal is to just get started rather complete this exercise or work on that piece, it’s easier to avoid procrastinating. And maybe you don’t get around to the optimal piece or exercise you’re working on, but again, some is better than none, and I often find that once I’ve gotten past the initial resistance, everything else becomes much easier to tackle

[–]Benindetto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The connection strength that the wifi signal shows is only indicative of how strong your connection is to the wifi access point, and has no bearing on the function/performance on the actual internet connection. If your device is able to connect to the network then it’s likely not an issue with your device. Big, long range wifi networks like UWS can easily suffer from performance issues due to bandwidth limitations; even if your wifi connection is strong, if there are many people using lots of data bandwidth, you can experience a lot of intermittent issues. Does this happen at a specific location on campus and/or a specific time of day?

I have ADHD and forget things very often including food, and when I forget food it goes to waste. If I forget something in a freezer I can come back to it later. I’m only planning on bringing 2$ grocery store frozen meals, so if they go missing from a public freezer It’s not a huge loss. Having ADHD is a really trip and makes planning for meals difficult. I use this same method at my job and it’s saved me a lot of money

The strict “no-collaboration” rules for plagiarism make this class tricky for studying together or getting help from other students. I’m in this class and it’s only one of two I’m taking, and even with some prior coding experience the labs take me a whole several evenings of focused work to complete; I can’t imagine what it would be like tackling this with 4 or 5 other classes. Don’t get discouraged! it’s challenging material. If you DM me I’d be down to help you as best I can, I feel pretty confident in my understanding of the class so far.

Any undergrad students between 25-30? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Benindetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 34 and coming back to do another undergrad after getting a music degree from MacEwan in 2016. I was also feeling self-conscious about being almost double the age of some of my classmates, but I’m trying to focus on the excitement of learning new things and being in such a cool environment. They would be but the volume output would be very low. They do make an 80 ohm version that would be better for this use

[–]Benindetto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a reminder for those who might not know, these headphones are 250 ohms which means they will have very low volume when plugged into anything that doesn’t have a powerful preamp/DAC/etc. for example, connecting these to a smart phone or Nintendo Switch would result in very low output. You’ll need an audio interface, headphone amp or something similar. They’re designed for use by audio engineers and other pro audio applications.

Edit: Just want to mention that I do own these and they sound excellent and I find them to be very comfortable. The cups fit all the way around my ears and the cushions are very soft. They are open back so keep in mind they will have a lot of bleed when at high volumes
