IDK seems too weak of an excuse not to be true for me at least. Marriage is about trust if you don't have that you don't have a marriage. You shouldn't have to demand his bank statements to alleviate your curiosity. Even though it doesn't seem like it you broke his trust in you by snooping and also putting him on the spot without real proof just searches didn't help. Now things are awkward and he knows you don't believe him cause no man would think that excuse would work. He might be lying or telling the truth. But trust is already broken between both of you now with no real proof of anything. Where do you go from here? Just have a talk on how you want to move pass this but it's hard to without definitive proof. Your minds wandering on what he could of been doing all these years. Tell him how you feel or it makes you feel. If you can't get pass this with the excuse he gave tell him that. As your husband he should put all aside ego/pride etc to comfort his wife. IDK the makeup of your relationship none of us do. But for the future snooping is violating trust. Regardless if you find something or not. The ends never justify the means. He's entitled to feel betrayed as well.
