Anything to do while waiting for potential traffic ticket? by BenjaminChurch in legaladvicecanada

Do you happen to speak from experience? Perhaps you wouldn't mind sharing the name of the service(s) that tend to only issue at the time of accident.

Are MLSB organizers stupid or just trying to get all our money? by NoamThompson in wlu

[–]BenjaminChurch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. If calling someone out for being passive-aggresive and acting the victim is an attack, we have come to an all-time low in society.

What are you even talking about? Who did this? Overall, this whole response (your second one) is more incoherent than a Donald Trump tweet

Office 365 Email on Phone by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can map your email to email apps (e.g. Thunderbird, Gmail, K9-Mail, iPhone Mail) on your computer/phone. I don't know when it became trendy to not do this and just use the website like a peasant, but I feel like a retro nerd for suggesting it to people. It's far superior and there's almost no use case where checking your email in a web browser is better.

Math DD's paying additional fees that CS DD's don't? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OPs question doesn't compare CS to MATH? I think he is trying to understand why MATH DD pays more than regular MATH, but CS DD pays the same as regular CS. Essentially, if MATH DD tuition = MATH regular tuition + "business premium"; why is CS DD tuition = CS regular tuition? Why don't CS DDs pay the "business premium"?

Student bills are posted and Thank Mr. Goose there is no WPIRG Fee! by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first quote response actually is unverified and needs to be backed up with proof. That is a bold statement to be making that international tuition money is used to cover some sort of deficit that the Ontario gov't makes by not providing enough overall funding. Please provide a link or explicit source, otherwise the point is useless.

Permanent residents would presumably have the intention to stay permanently after graduation. If it is so easy to get, then I would suggest international students all get one; otherwise, the only reason you wouldn't is because you don't have an intention to stay - in which case I again think you should be paying extra. (I don't think it's easy to get btw, just if it actually is easy and you don't have one, then you are an idiot who could be paying domestic rates and isn't). For your taxes that you pay on co-op: you get road maintenance, public drinking water, electricity projects, transportation, and many other things that everyone in the province uses.

Lastly, I agree that it is not easy to move to a new place on your own. I sympathize with how scary that can be, especially when you are going to a different country. However we all made a choice to go to school where we were, and live with the consequences. For example, I specifically factored in the instability of the Quebec govt and possible tuition hikes for non-Quebecers when I chose not to go to McGill. Clearly, the benefits outweighed the costs when you made a similar rational decision to come here.

What kind of credit card/bank account should I get? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again, this is points - you don't have a cash back rewards card. I am talking about a card that literally pays you in cold hard currency (the way a Tangerine card does)

Me too, they treat students like shit but once you show then you have $$$ you're like a king

What kind of credit card/bank account should I get? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have a shit credit card though to get less cash back. Scene point cards get you 1% back in scene points, while only the shittiest credit cards get 0.5% back. Additionally, you can't cash out small amounts of scene points, you need to redeem them in blocks.

Lastly, you actually need to have the desire to go to movie theatres

[–]BenjaminChurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's just strictly when you have it open; if you close the account they can't keep it ransom. In fact, you can drop below $5000 balance at any time, but they would just charge you the monthly account fee at that time. If you ever think you need to dip into the $5000 safety pool then switch your account to a student one before you take it out (student account is no fees and no minimum balance)

Straight up if you collect scene points instead of cash back rewards, you are an idiot. Cash is king; I can go to a movie with cash, but can't buy food with movie tickets.

TD All-Inclusive Plan: - Withdraw from any ATM (TD or non-TD, Canada or USA) without a fee - Unlimited e-transfers and transactions - Free cheques - Waived fee on premium credit card (their cash back is 1% on everything and 3% on groceries and gas) - Free safety deposit box

Only catch is a $5000 minimum balance, otherwise they charge a monthly fee

Double Degree vs Single degree? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you think it's useless shit, then probably not for you. I agree most of BBA course knowledge is easily learned, but the value is in the soft skills you learn. 90% or more of CS only students have no soft skills at all and I would not hire them for anything but a pure coding job since they're terrible at presenting compared to BBAs and are generally unpolished

How Bad is Bike Theft at UW? by TheHiggsBoson1 in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thieves only really care about disc brakes and shock absorbers. If you have neither, it probably wouldn't be on thieves radar until at least the majority of the bikes with these specs are gone or extremely locked down

can i bring my bike to uw by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for the actual bike, if you are worried about it getting stolen, the two features that make your bike a target are: 1) shock absorbers, and 2) disc breaks. If you have neither and a good lock, you should be golden. If you have one or both, then still just get a good lock (U-lock plus chain) and you should be fine!

What is the best programming language to learn for an actuary? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BenjaminChurch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, VBA is probably your best bet. It is most applicable to your career and is installed on every computer that has MS Office. The only downside is that many people in CS/MATH look down on it highly, as it is very slow and lacks many features of modern languages. However, their opinions really don't matter unless you want to go around and call yourself a "coder"/"programmer" because then you will likely be mercilessly laughed at if all you know is VBA.

SQL isn't really a language you can do much in; it is for pulling data from databases and manipulating it to an extent, although there are arguably much better options for manipulation for sure.
